There is a whole genre of anti-homeless drive-along videos that seek to “witness” urban “decline” w/out explaining anything. The car acts as both protection from and intrusion into poor environments, allowing the passerby to gaze out w/out being seen themselves. It’s slum gazing.

Using an unannounced curfew to detain students, faculty, legal observers and journalists on a public university campus currently overrun with police and to then charge these people with “unlawful assembly” and “conspiracy to commit burglary” is authoritarian. Admin has to go now!
UCPD has detained a group of approximately 40 students and others in Parking Lot 2, who police say were gathered against curfew. They have arrested faculty, legal observers, and members of the media for unlawful assembly and charges including conspiracy to commit burglary.

Time and again, I’ve seen politicians mis-characterize the right to remain as the same thing as being told to remain, as if unhoused people are controlled by advocates. At best, this is misunderstanding; at worse, it’s slander.

Since I began this research in 2020, I have only witnessed advocates calling for the right to remain, which leaves open the option to pursue whatever shelter the city has made available. I have seen these shelters criticized in a way that perhaps influences people to remain.(2/3)

Just yesterday, I brought an unhoused friend into CVS to receive the vaccine and we were turned away b/c we hadn’t made an online appointment. We made one for next week, but at this point this vaccine should be walk-in everywhere. Or go door to door in community w/out access. 1/2
