This spectacle of non-policing is quite something. In one of the world’s most militarized cities. A stark reminder that in this settler democracy, the seat of power is a comfortable & welcoming space for white supremacist violence.

NEW: Gov Newsom's plan to force unhoused people into treatment has sparked immediate backlash from civil rights groups and disability rights advocates. “Subjecting unhoused people to forced treatment is extremely draconian + morally wrong" - @EveGarrow

I am tired of the romanticization of informality. Spend some time with the precariat in Indian cities & watch the police render illegal their daily “entrepreneurial” practices. Watch them dismiss state-issued documents. Watch the extortion. Watch the police on the streets.

Mills College will cease to be a degree-granting institution. I arrived there in 1988, alone, drawn to a part of the world I had never even visited & rebelling against advice to attend one of the better-known East Coast colleges. Here I am with my mom outside my dorm.1/3

Once again the @latimes gets it dead wrong.👇🏽Literally so. The current LA City Council is tyrannical, in process & outcome. Its policies enact social death & actual death on the poor & unhoused. If there is democracy in LA, it’s being kept alive by social justice activists.

And then there is this cruel idiocy. There is literally stacks of research showing that working-class communities are forced to drive long distances because they can’t afford to live close to work. Can’t read research? It’s just COMMON SENSE.

On my mind as I teach Histories & Theories of Planning: the tyranny of practicality has led to the diminution and depoliticization of urban planning as a discipline & profession. Social movements demonstrate that the impractical becomes practical through struggle.

Let’s start with the inspiring. Today displaced Echo Park Lake residents returned to the reopened “park” (more on that in a minute) to assert community & shared struggle. They are united in their critique of carceral housing, LA’s latest model of displacement. 1/4

I was an “international student” for many years of undergrad & grad education. We took on the campus jobs & summer employment that no one else wanted/ had to do. The I-20 governed mobility, making the rare trips home harrowing. But what is now at hand is terror unleashed by ICE.

What is core curriculum? What is pre-requisite knowledge? In urban planning, our incoming grad students complete a summer math camp. Math is fine, but if I had my way, they would all be reading Black Reconstruction as prep for a grad education in planning.

Upcoming teaching week. Calling bullshit on the popular Covid-19 line, “We’re all in this together.” Used to bestow naive comfort or solicit sacrifice, this slogan obfuscates the structural inequalities of racial capitalism that are being exposed & deepened by this crisis.

Read this thread👇🏽. Their policies are anti-Black & enact social death & actual death. Now we know that they are explicitly & collusively anti-Black. There should be no options here other than immediate resignation.
