When people ask me what single thing has had the most impact on homelessness in our district, my answer is always the same: We were able to convert a hotel into a shelter site. It changed everything. The process was VERY difficult – but it can be replicated all over LA. 🧵

Worried about coronavirus in LA? Me too. Now imagine you live on the street with 5,000 other people in 50 square blocks, and you all share about ten bathrooms. Or in a park where bathrooms are locked for twelve hours a day. That’s the reality we’ve created for so many here.

LA hasn’t moved urgently on coronavirus -- even continuing to hold large events like the LA Marathon because "cases have been limited here." The idea isn't to wait until cases and deaths increase. It's to PREVENT that. We need decisive action. Here's what we could do:

Something I learned recently: LAPD gets sued for police misconduct regularly, but misconduct settlements aren't paid out of LAPD’s budget. They’re paid out from the city's general fund -- which means they eat into money for other services.

One dynamic that has always existed, but we're seeing play out so frequently now: When tenants break the law, they are evicted, have their credit destroyed, and can even be jailed. When landlords break the law, they're usually just sent a strongly worded letter. (thread)

I'm just flattered that Nancy Pelosi thinks our City Council race is worth the attention! Three weeks to go. We're so close to transforming politics in LA, and starting the work of creating a healthier, more just city for all. Sign up to volunteer here:

Meanwhile, the City Council of Los Angeles (the city with the worst air quality in the country) voted 12-1 today to relax pollution-reduction requirements at the Port of LA for China Shipping, despite opposition from the NRDC and the California Air Resources Board.

1.4 million lives. That's how many people the US could save by enacting aggressive decarbonization over the next 20 years. Why @drvox says air pollution ought to be seen as a global civil rights crisis:

As we exit our second weekend of self-quarantine, it can be hard to feel anything but powerless in the face of this unprecedented pandemic. But there is also an opportunity now to acknowledge and repair the faultlines that have weakened our city for decades. (THREAD)

Right now, the Mayor's Coronavirus website begins with "there are only a few known COVID-19 cases in the region." But the County Health Department has only tested 72 people. There are ten million people in LA County. We have no real idea how widespread the disease is here.

In Oakland, a group of unhoused mothers settled in a vacant home with their children. On Tuesday at 5 AM, @moms4housing were forcibly removed by officers in paramilitary gear with guns drawn. We spend millions terrorizing our neighbors for experiencing the trauma of poverty.

Three years ago, in my district, Mely Corado was killed when police fired into a store. Her family will never stop grieving. Nor will all the people who loved Valentina Orellana-Peralta. What changes will this city make to ensure that this never happens again?

Last Wednesday, families were forcibly removed from vacant state-owned homes in El Sereno. They were charged with crimes and made homeless on the eve of Thanksgiving. It didn’t have to happen this way. (thread)

This was a campaign built on the work of organizers and movement leaders who have been fighting for a better LA for years, and so many energized people who were just realizing their power to shape the city. I’m so honored to carry their values with me as a Councilmember.

Thank you for holding me accountable. I am very much still learning about what it means to wield my new power effectively, and I did not do that on Wednesday. But hopefully I can do better going forward.

LA's unhoused are especially vulnerable in a pandemic. There's no excuse not to have hygiene stations set up at encampments. Regular testing should be done there as well. Moving people into tightly-packed shelters is not the solution right now.

Today, I participated in @DrugPolicyOrg ‘s Rally for Overdose Awareness alongside @LASidewalk . As we gathered to honor the lives of those who’ve lost their lives to drug overdoses, I couldn’t help but to feel disheartened thinking about the Governor’s veto of SB-57 last week.

Other cities have cancelled large gatherings. LA must do the same, immediately. Today, our Public Health Director said "we will get to a point" where events need to be called off. If we're serious about slowing the spread of the virus, what are we waiting for?

I have countless people to thank individually. But for now, I just want to celebrate the joy of working with so many of you to fight for our city -- and get ready for the work to come. There will be joy in that work, too. Because we’re all going to City Hall together.
