Today is my birthday,🎉 I have been fighting for 31 years! 5 in the charity I founded which didn’t work out & 26 in ! #Remediationplus #Dyslexia We now serve many more kids than when we began & some public school boards are coming around! The work is tough but so gratifying!

Students love learning Spelling rules, they offer security. When we ask them, why did you double the /l/in spell? Bc.. Same with syllables, why did you double the /p/ in supper? After instruction, these special moments empower kids who need explicit instruction.

I’m concerned about the older students. In order to remediate properly you have to understand their gaps. Using a Schonnell Test you can download from ERIC You can see their reading age. If you write down their answers you can analyze why they’re not comprehending. He’s gr 8

Dr.Shanahan reminds us that morphology over phonics is not yet proven superior to phonics only for improving decoding. We have to include Spelling to get to the explicit pronunciation that leads to comprehension ⬆️ & memory retention.(Ehri)

@rastokke Workbooks have been highly disparaged by school districts but my private school clients purchase them annually! I altered my binders to include worksheets to support lessons so public school teachers could get what they needed. It’s astounding what erroneous messaging has done!

I didn’t go into this for every child. I went into this inferno for #Dyslexia & struggling students. Early intervention & even late interv. are life savers. While there are so many studies that we must read those of us who’ve paid $50,000.00 at elite schools know what works. 😅

My 2 cents- The biggest problem we have is teaching those kids that struggle to learn with RR or Fountas &Pinell. Had they received #structuredliteracy ,within 3 months they would be flying. If not, they start developing very harmful compensatory strategies!

@ehanford It’s not a relay race, it’s a ramp onto the highway. I remember seeing a child in a library , I knew from his behaviour he didn’t have the key. Many are forgetting all this change has been for dyslexics so be careful what you teach and how you teach it. Processing is a key word!

@teachforever54 What we will see more and more, it’s starting to show, we aren’t helping dyslexics. We’ve got the lingo but the how has been mangled. Phonics was never enough. It’s an orthographic processing problem. Ehri‘S work is the most effective bc of her focus on OM, pronunciation.

If the Kilpatrick theory on PA is wrong is the PAST test wrong too? We can only assess that with our knowledge. Science can’t test a test. I don’t like it bc in my OG training with a speech path in NY we didn’t do it that way but based on my knowledge I give it a 👎

…but the truth is, when we dump vulnerable children with complex needs into a regular classroom without the specialized supports needed to guarantee both safety AND learning, this isn’t inclusion. It’s abandonment.

@nsachdeva2019 I agree. It’s truly disconcerting what’s happening to education. Some teach with all their hearts, others just want to get through the day. It’s bad that there’s no accountability.

@rastokke Boys need explicit instruction, they excel in careers where there are fewer women. I understand that the conduit between right & left hemisphere re the corpus callosum in girls moves both ways more easily ;for boys whole language has been a catastrophe. We are the multitaskers:)
