We are making a big impact on
@eqao
scores by grade 3.
Some boards are doing small groups pull out all the way through to grade 8.
“We’re finally at the table!”
If you see children in grade 3 on Lexia for 2nd year and you can see they can’t read and barely spell you are committing educational malpractice.

Time to reread this piece which was David Kilpatrick’s hypothesis.

We now serve many more kids than when we began & some public school boards are coming around!
The work is tough but so gratifying!
@CBCNews
Interesting, I live 1 block away from one & yesterday got in my car and went to another store because of this article.
I can’t handle to hear that parents can’t feed their kids!
We need to react.
Students love learning Spelling rules, they offer security. When we ask them, why did you double the /l/in spell? Bc..
Same with syllables, why did you double the /p/ in supper? After instruction, these special moments empower kids who need explicit instruction.
I’m concerned about the older students.
In order to remediate properly you have to understand their gaps.
Using a Schonnell Test you can download from ERIC
You can see their reading age.
If you write down their answers you can analyze why they’re not comprehending.

It`s important for us to realize the kind of autonomy that classroom teachers have. Therein lies the problem. This is a worthwhile listen ,especially if you`re running a K classroom. Russell ,making a difference!
@ehanford
I can`t believe it, you changed the education system completely. No one else could do it, when Dr. Lyon failed I thought it would never happen.
I`m really sick of people denying that

Your entire

You`re standing on a sand castle.

I think I told you they sent me a legal letter
I had done a chart comparing R+ to RR
They asked me to scrub my website.
Cost to me for my legals.$1700.00
Worth every cent, I disturbed them.
Did you realize that anyone trained in Orton Gillingham has been doing spelling analysis all along?
This new discovery started decades ago.

Dr.Shanahan reminds us that morphology over phonics is not yet proven
superior to phonics only for improving decoding.
We have to include Spelling to get to the explicit pronunciation that leads to comprehension ⬆️ & memory retention.(Ehri)
@rastokke
Workbooks have been highly disparaged by school districts but my private school clients purchase them annually!
I altered my binders to include worksheets to support lessons so public school teachers could get what they needed.
It’s astounding what erroneous messaging has done!

We need more discussion around the cop out of putting struggling readers on software instruction.
In Canada, that’s the go to.
It appears to alleviate their guilt!
Exciting new podcast episode! My guests are Nidhi Sachdeva and Jim Hewitt. Discussed: their co-designed science of learning class at OISE & equitable education - strategies for closing the achievement gap. Don’t miss it!

I posted this bc SoR is like climate change advocacy!
They never talk about grade 2 and beyond!
I have studied the research for 25 years!
Very little is new.
Your advocacy has abandoned the
#Dyslexia
child.
@Mrs_L_Addison
So many schools in Ontario using Remediation Plus now, mentioned in Right to Read.
Not everyone is in K-1!
You can’t just abandon the other students!
Programs with training for the win!🏅
Our effectiveness seen clearly on EQAO!
I didn’t go into this for every child.
I went into this inferno for
#Dyslexia
& struggling students.
Early intervention & even late interv. are life savers.
While there are so many studies that we must read those of us who’ve paid $50,000.00 at elite schools know what works.
😅
My 2 cents-
The biggest problem we have is teaching those kids that struggle to learn with RR or Fountas &Pinell.
Had they received
#structuredliteracy
,within 3 months they would be flying.
If not, they start developing very harmful compensatory
strategies!
@ehanford
It’s not a relay race, it’s a ramp onto the highway.
I remember seeing a child in a library , I knew from his behaviour he didn’t have the key.
Many are forgetting all this change has been for dyslexics so be careful what you teach and how you teach it.
Processing is a key word!

I appreciate Greg writing about this.If they served properly and diagnostically in K-3 there would be far less chaos moving forward.Inclusive education is wishful thinking to save money.We`re seeing it again now in the Tier 1 is everything to everyone mandates.

Digging deeper into orthographic mapping
The ability to pronounce accurately the spelling of the word leads not only to sight reading but also
to improved vocabulary and comprehension.

A few powerful points by Dr.Dan Willingham
Belief is a mental representation ,
Persuasion is a new way of thinking !
I found this so useful as we think about our challenges bringing evidence based instruction to the forefront.
@1in5advocacy
I scanned this.
I think that I accepted this a few years ago and I’m a lot happier.
I take one child, one educator , one clinic, one school and one district at a time and it’s been life changing.

My favorite academic leadership is from Dr.Siegel and Sally Shaywitz.
They are more child centric.

What we will see more and more, it’s starting to show,
we aren’t helping dyslexics.
We’ve got the lingo but the
how has been mangled.
Phonics was never enough.
It’s an orthographic processing problem.
Ehri‘S work is the most effective bc of her focus on OM, pronunciation.
@NateJoseph19
@mandylorianm
Not necessarily true.
Some studies don’t take Dyslexia students into account.
I’m guilty of having favorite researchers .
Or, sometimes I follow a new idea with interest.
I have a lot of background knowledge on Reading , I knew something was “off” with PA .
I can’t just swallow.
"Phonemic Awareness involves the understanding that spoken words are composed of segments of sound smaller than a syllable."
Dr. Reid Lyon
Repeating this because many are confusing what PA is.
@NateJoseph19
Step 4 get millions of dollars from venture capital as next best thing
The intriguing thing about what recently occurred in our SoR world is that many non profits were all over it.
They helped the spread.
@literacypodcast
I think that we are doing intervention bc there is a landfill of good kids never been taught ,there is a landfill of kids who have never been identified. As much as I studied the science for 25 years & I understand prevention ,it`s very tricky bc teachers are weakly trained.
Look what I found

AMEN-That`s precisely the point.
The Tier 1 revolution is great and essential but we also have to be realistic,when you see a struggling child or when the data brings them to the top,respond powerfully or you will FAIL.
That`s a leadership decision.

We are seeing people with no real training who read a few books, learned some grapheme phonemes presenting at LD conferences in 🇨🇦
Some of this is becoming a grotesque oversimplification of their needs.

Look how WWC categorized LLI though
Tell me that helps anybody!
You can fail in alphabetics , basically the student doesn’t learn to decode and encode but get a good rating
on other stuff.
This WWC rating stuff is highly problematic!
Orthographic Mapping requires Spelling.
Please go to the source of the research when discussing O.M.
It’s Dr.Ehri’s phrase, it’s her research.
Her paper 2014!
@EminaMcLean
While I agree that it`s getting tiresome , here`s where I disagree ; I have read about your work here, it`s formidable.
I think it`s a way to exclude the bad guys ,to bring profs to task & shame them, that IS valuable.
Teachers have been neglected & they are invigorated by it.
Even with the Mississipi miracle we see 20% of students not succeeding.
We need to stop pretending that
#Tier2
should be married to
#Tier1
, it’s not enough.
I really love Carolyn Denton, she’s one of the researchers!
"The results suggest teachers may need more systems-level support to ensure the intensity of instruction required to improve the early reading skills of students at risk for reading difficulties."
@msrebeccabirch
My BS Radar goes up when the well-intentioned experts argue about curricula and programs but never address what they do for struggling readers and writers. Any program will work for typical learners! Talk to me about outliers, and I’ll know if you do the work. It’s that simple.
If the Kilpatrick theory on PA is wrong is the PAST test wrong too?
We can only assess that with our knowledge.
Science can’t test a test.
I don’t like it bc in my OG training with a speech path in NY we didn’t do it that way but based on my knowledge I give it a 👎
In the
#ScienceofReading
movement there are factions.
My 2cents, keep your nose to the ground and learn how to succeed with all your students and focus on Reading to fluency, Spelling and Writing.
@tiffany_peltier
We work with these types of kids,funny how no one ever mentions their difficulties differentiating hearing the short vowels and representing them accurately.
Certainly one of the tell tale signs.
Auditory processing and orthographic representations .
Big part of Dyslexia
…but the truth is, when we dump vulnerable children with complex needs into a regular classroom without the specialized supports needed to guarantee both safety AND learning, this isn’t inclusion. It’s abandonment.
Fabulous explanation of how students with
#Dyslexia
differ from other students.
Please don’t underestimate their struggles.
Right now we’re on the Knowledge building journey,
these students have processing difficulties.
⬇️🗣️
Teaching a child with
#Dyslexia
symptoms isn’t just about systematic phonics.
It’s part of it .
The other part is learning how to get them to synthesize and process language in reading, spelling and writing.
As remediators of students who are identified or behind we see everything.
When I began training in school boards,the teachers told me they knew who the low kids were but they didn`t understand why.They were never taught .
I love pedagogical discourse and research.
Why?
It helps us grow!
It helps us learn.
I do listen to the tweets about how schools are failing to respond to the calls for action.
That has caused me depression in the past.
I have decided to abstain from those tweets.
It’s pure 💔!
Just heard parents are getting WTW as an intervention.
Parent said it didn’t work.
Of course not, an intervention is an intervention, it’s not a phonics program.
Is reading intervention the same as a classroom program?
#Dyslexia
A few days ago I asked if parents had been identified by a screener received intervention.
Not one so far wrote in that they had.

I agree. It’s truly disconcerting what’s happening to education.
Some teach with all their hearts, others just want to get through the day.
It’s bad that there’s no accountability.

Unbelievable!
They have the lowest reading scores in Canada and married to RR.That could be the source of their stress inducing formula.
@rastokke
Boys need explicit instruction, they excel in careers where there are fewer women.
I understand that the conduit between right & left hemisphere re the corpus callosum in girls moves both ways more easily ;for boys whole language has been a catastrophe.
We are the multitaskers:)
