@bryanrbeal For example, Cleveland's Catholic schools barely beat the Ohio average for 3rd grade, foundational reading. Yet Steubenville public schools completely tromp far wealthier schools across the state.

Honestly, whatever they may say to interviewers, I’d say the biggest reason is simply an anti-institutional mood across the country. From “farm sharing” to micro-breweries to schools, the cool people want small-box providers.
Parents aren’t fleeing public schools because of politics. They’re chasing rigor. The system’s been sleeping on them for too long—and now the fire’s finally been lit.

The Science of Reading mobile app has >300 SoR / structured literacy resources. Probably less than 1/4 deal with phonics, if even that. But we get this. Just one reason I’m not impressed with the classical education movement.
Why it is that, as phonics advocates, we are all now expected to use the expression "science of reading" rather than the simpler and more familiar expression "phonics". Academic jargon is usually designed to hide something. I don't like to talk like I'm hiding something.

And you wonder why socialism gets such political ground among rich suburbanites. 44% of Georgia's students were below basic in grade 8 math. 41% below basic for 4th grade reading.
Buford High School in Georgia has officially opened its new $62 million football stadium. • 10,000 seats.• 15 luxury suites.• 3,500 sqft video scoreboard.• Two-story fieldhouse with locker rooms. This is nicer than many college football stadiums. (📸: Miguel Martinez/AJC)

It's now 2025, and @CarnegieFdn has a ten year plan. By 2025, they will “generate evidence and synthesize findings” to "transform the American High School". (But not to fund those who've known how to do this. since 2010.)

The R&D Agenda outlines knowledge-building and tool-making priorities to drive a national shift from seat time to real-world, competency-based high school learning. STANFORD, Calif. –
The Carnegie Unit is over a century old & increasingly ill-suited for K-12. Many think it’s time for a change. But what would replace it? And might a replacement cause more problems than it solves?. I discuss with @jal_mehta. At #RHSU.

Pretty sure I’ve been trying to tell @OhioGadfly this for years now. #FundSystemsExperiments, not one-offs + essays.
Short-term credentials are more attractive than ever, but a new report finds that most credentials fail to deliver on the promise of increased pay or job advancement. A new mechanism for assuring quality is called for, the authors say, focusing on the real-life outcomes that.
