My sole proprietorship art business is in no way, shape, or form a big corporation. I haven't deep pockets. And yet, I've taken action when others have infringed upon my intellectual property rights. Protecting the intellectual property rights of all artists benefits all artists.
This is total nonsense. Protecting literally everyone's intellectual and personal property from being unfairly used in AI training won't prevent people from creating freely or somehow make corporations stronger. That's just the new narrative desperate AI folks are latching onto.

My wife of 34 yrs went to community college before I met her, then later in life after we were married went to business school for a paralegal certificate, and THEN went on to law school as a returning student, passed the bar, and became an attorney. And I'm DAMNED proud of her!
@LakotaMan1
When I met my wife, she was a retail associate. By the time we married, she was a manager. When it became clear the store was going under, she took night classes for a paralegal certificate. She worked as a paralegal, then put herself through law school. She's now an attorney.
@nate_nugent
Dude, if I had a choice between dealing with you and dealing with a bear, I'd choose the bear, and I'm another dude!
Based on my personal experiences, I have to say animals aren't nearly as dangerous and unpredictable as are my fellow humans.
@SMillerNatCon
I became a poet because I was taught poetry in school.
As a poet, writer of fiction, artist, and illustrator, I'm appalled by this severely utilitarian notion that it's not worth teaching kids about the arts. Art, including literary art, is an integral part of human culture.

What makes a writer a writer? The act of writing.
If a writer has written ONE work, they are not a fake writer. Just because a work may vanish if a publisher goes under doesn't make one fake.
There are enough gatekeepers in the writing world already. It doesn't need more.

I love smart and strong women so much, I married one!

Why did I start posting?
To promote myself as an artist, poet, and writer, and to promote my works.
Why do I want to grow?
To reach more folks who might appreciate my works.
@melodramateur
A B average is respectable.
I had a 3.99 GPA at uni. My lowest grade was an A-. I graduated summa cum laude with a BS in Biology.
That was back in 1992.
There were no such things as QuillBot and ChatGPT when I was in college. I'm sure cheating went on, but I never resorted to it.
@melodramateur
I carried that skill over to writing nonfiction articles for publication. I've written several over the years, published in various small-press publications.
A number of my articles are up on the CLASSICALLY EDUCATED blog:

WHERE THE RED FERN GROWS.
If you know, you know.
Had my daughter read it in home-school. Made me sob reading it through before she read it.
@HorrorNHaunted
So many unforgettable scenes in the 1979 Salem's Lot miniseries, but one that's really stuck with me is when the monster kid warded off the vampire with a cross from one of his own model sets. I was a monster kid. Could have been me!

It's what you're used to.
Would I want to go back to the days of writing on a typewriter? NO WAY!
I CAN do it, I HAVE done it, but that doesn't mean I LIKED it! Word processors were a godsend.
Doing research without the internet would be less of a chore, since I love libraries.

You were lucky.
I did a series of 6 illos for a certain (now deceased) author/publisher. They initially praised my work, but dithered when it came time to pay, offered a partial payment, then ghosted me. Found out they'd hired another artist to redo the illos! Never got paid.

@melodramateur
OK. I pretty much figured out "slay". I'd say it's a modern way of saying "you killed it" (meaning you did something very well). That one made sense to me. "Serving cunt" was the one that I thought was an insult.

Gotta a problem with that? FIGHT ME (virtually-speaking)!
Those calling others "betas" are usually the true "betas", quite insecure!
Did you realize most authors only see a tiny fraction, a small percentage, of that $20-$40? No?
FUCK OFF!
ANYONE advocating stealing from authors and artists can FUCK OFF!

Therein lies the true crux of the matter.
As a business, the entertainment industry is supposed to entertain. When it fails to do so, it fails as a business. Business failure often leads to things like lay-offs, bankruptcies, and businesses going out of business.

Big Fantasy doesn't want you to know this, but you can have historical armour in a fantasy setting.
It's public domain, functional, beautiful, and there are more reference images of extant museum pieces and GOOD reproductions now than ever before
Hey, fantasy artists, gamers, and fans!
I feel like sharing some dragon art (any excuse to share dragons). Feel free to add your own dragon art in the comments. I'd love to see even more dragons!

Worst WTF moment — I did 6 illos for an author/publisher who decided to hire another artist to redo the work. The client first praised the illos I did, but dithered when it came to paying me and never did pay. She then ghosted me for a time until notifying me she'd hired another.
If this latest attempt at having a Facebook profile ends up permanently disabled (and it just might), since FB made me send a photo of my face in the appeal (I sent the photo below), I'm going to start saying "Facebook doesn't like my face".
For all I know, it might be true!

I've been married to the same woman for 34 years. At this point, looks has little to do with it (neither one of us looks like we did in our twenties). It's about sharing one's life with another, a life partnership.
Any horror art aficionados out there?
I've done a bit of horror art.
I'll post a sampling of my published horror art below.
Fellow horror artists, feel free to share some of your dark creations in the comments.

Hello, fellow artists!
Welcome!
Glad to have you along on my new and improved Twitter/X experience.
(I'd say "welcome to the next level", but I know that would be pushing it.)
Just received this notification from Twitter/X. Does that mean I'm no longer limited and labelled as spam?
Weird, but I'm not complaining if my content is now more discoverable.

Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary,
Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore—
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.
— Edgar Allan Poe, "The Raven"
The accidental marigolds (grew from seeds that happened to fall from plants we had in containers) growing in the rocks along the side of the garage are doing remarkably well.
Cryptid/cryptozoology art!
I've slowly been adding illos of various cryptids to merch in my print-on-demand stores. So far, I've done two different Bigfoot portraits, a Nessie, a Canadian Lake Monster, and a Dogman/Werewolf.
I'd love to see cryptid art by other artists!

I've NEVER been popular.
I've NEVER won popularity contests.
I guess I simply lack charisma, that certain something popular people have in abundance.
I've learned to let my works speak for themselves. Seems to work for me.
Post an art piece that got buried before reaching anyone.
That's probably three-quarters of the art I post on here!
Not sure my "Head Abstract" get's much attention, certainly not as much as my more illustrative work. I think it has an 80s vibe to it.

Why do those types typically have that awful-looking short hair and ridiculous beard? I guess they're trying to look like 1800s homesteaders, or something like that, visually turning back the clock if they can't do it socially.
Well, Twitter/X may have updated its algorithm to allow users to see more posts from smaller accounts, but I'm not noticing a difference. The views on my posts are still in the pits.
@SoCal_Chemistry
I used adverbs in my short stories and even, on occasion, in my poems.
My short stories and poems say publication, in many instances more than once.
Here's a surprise — we have two red columbine plants flowering on the side slope. I know I put down some wildflower seeds two or three years ago, but we never had any columbine growing there until this spring. Well, they're there now! The more wildflowers the merrier!
@melodramateur
I should point out that I spent 2 yrs at university. I attended a community college my first 2 years (with a year break in-between). My final GPA at community college was 3.74 (it was academically tougher than uni). Graduated with honors with an AS. Lowest grade: C (in Calc II).

I've been saying bring back Paul McGann. Start all over from the 1996 movie and say to hell with anything RTD touched.
McGann was a great Doctor saddled with a sub-par TV movie (although a fabulous short episode that truly let his talent show). He deserves more screentime.
Over the last 3 nights, Michele and I watched the first 4 Thin Man films with William Powell and Myrna Loy. I previously saw bits and pieces of 1 or 2, but this was the first time I've watched any from beginning to end. Love 'em! Great fun! Powell and Loy had fantastic chemistry.
ARTISTS, you can only use ONE art picture to convince people to follow you. Which art piece are you using?
My illustration for "Swampy Transitions" by Michael Hodges, which appeared as cover-art for Issue 9 of PLASMA FREQUENCY MAGAZINE. It's a perennial favorite.
I don't care if you're "big" or "small", if you're an artist, I want to follow you and see your art in my feed! I want to "like" your art.
It's such a cold and cruel world for artists, I think artists should support one another whenever we can.

When it comes to followers, I'm definitely a small artist. However, considering that I'm a published sci-fi, fantasy, and horror artist and illustrator, multiple times over, and I'm an artist who sells PoD merch featuring his art, I like to think I'm an accomplished artist.
"Art is bad now because nobody knows how to suffer."
Maybe, to find art by folks who know how to suffer and know how to transform that suffering into something truly artistic, you might have to go outside the sheltered elitist mainstream. Look toward the smaller indie creators.
No, it doesn't sound tin foil hat. I've also voiced the opinion that there seems to be a coordinated effort to destroy culture. It does feel like these things are being done deliberately to leave society with little in the way of art and literature. No artists. No story tellers.
Might sound tin foil hat here but the way that they’re erasing media, the rampant lack of media literacy, rise of AI replacing art and the decline of well… everything, it’s all somehow connected. They’ll be no one here to tell the stories. And that’s exactly how they want it.
@DMACalvert
Strange, when I was doing art for clients in the small-press publishing realm (including cover artworks and interior illos for two different fantasy role playing game rule supplement books), my clients were able to afford my art AND sell the publications for reasonable prices.
@KKBros405
My favorite: "Lambton Worm and Knight".
A medieval knight AND a draconic monster. What's not to love?
I have a sticker of this on my personal laptop.
