My father’s overdose death was not a homicide. The last person he interacted with was more than likely a friend, a person in crisis themselves. Prosecuting overdose deaths as homicides is an ugly, archaic way to respond to a public health crisis. A worthwhile read ⬇️.
Overdose-homicide prosecutions occasionally catch career criminals, but some believe they promote a grotesque misreading of the complexity of addiction—and equate poor judgment with murder.

Today I have the honor of being sworn in for a 2nd term in the #PAHouse. Thank you to all the organizers, community leaders, tenants, working people & citizens fighting for change who co-govern with me. The road to justice is long, but it’s not lonely.

#COVID19 is a gendered crisis. Women-led households are disproportionately impacted by layoffs AND women are the majority of frontline workers in a public health crisis. Now more than ever, #EqualPayDay should be the same for all workers.

#Menstruation is not a dirty word. Today @RepTurzai omitted the words "menstruation products" while introducing advocates for #MenstrualEquity from @periodmovement @PittPubHealth. If our leaders are ashamed to say the word, how can we end the stigma?

Many of my neighbors don't want the hassle of owning a car—parking, insurance, gas. Before I was a state rep, I relied on public transit like thousands of Pittsburghers. I support H.B. 2625 because investing in @PGHTransit means jobs & connecting our neighborhoods.

I’m grieving for Antwon with his family and his community. Lawmakers have a duty to reevaluate and rebuild the prevailing power structures when they fail to deliver justice. Let’s fight to hold our officers, our courts, and our systems accountable. #AntwonRose.

"The study could suggest a phenomenon where fracking is actually contributing to a wealth transfer. those earning wealth in the fracking industry aren’t living in the rural communities that are experiencing the majority of the drilling." . Huh, how about that.
A new study from Penn State shows that even though rural school districts contain the majority of fracking wells in PA, it's not translating to the expected increases in per-pupil revenues, locally raised school funding, income & property wealth.

In Pennsylvania, medical students are permitted to perform pelvic exams on patients under anesthesia without consent or awareness. This practice is barbaric. I'm proud to support my colleagues @RepFiedler and @RepHanbidge to mandate consent.

I don't want any more families in Pennsylvania to lose someone before they have a chance to recover. Harm reduction saves lives: syringe exchange services, supply testing tools, and more will help to end the overdose crisis in Pennsylvania. It's time for action.
Supporting harm reduction policies and programs is my commitment to my dad’s memory, writes @RepInnamorato but it’s also my commitment to the neighbors whom we’ve lost and the families who loved them. Via @pgopinions

In a crisis, every existing precarity is exposed and every inequality is amplified. I'm humbled by the organizations and leaders who are rising to meet the needs of our neighbors, but we must make a commitment to do better at the end of this.

Pennsylvanians are always asked to pit our public health against private profits, but never has the divide been so stark or the stakes so high. Today @SpeakerTurzai wants us to vote to reopen businesses without necessary protections for workers. This is so deeply dangerous.

"The cracker plant itself is allowed by the state to emit 2.2 million tons of carbon dioxide each year, which is the equivalent of about 480,000 cars." In other words: all of Pittsburgh’s work on combating climate change through 2030 would be negated by a single plant.
One of the largest active construction projects in the U.S. is being built to produce millions of tons of something many people say the world needs a lot less of: plastic. And President Trump is scheduled to tour it this week.

I say that greed killed my father. He was written prescription after prescription for OxyContin to manage his chronic pain and fed his addiction. This fall will be the 10 year anniversary of his death. The Sackler family made billions on the lives of millions, like my dad.
In PA, we lose 12 people a day to drug overdoses. The opioid crisis is our biggest public health emergency. Families wrecked, countless caught in never-ending cycles of addiction - all because a Purdue prioritized maximizing profits over people. We are holding them accountable.

The prison phone system is a $1.2 billion-a-year industry dominated by a few private companies that set rates and fees dramatically in excess of regular commercial providers. PA's continued investment in this exploitative, predatory model makes us all complicit.
PSERS approved a $300 million investment into Platinum Equity yesterday, which owns Securus -- a company that profits off of phone calls to prisoners. In the last 15 years, PSERS invested $1 billion into Platinum.

We have a backward regulatory system that puts the onus on residents and workers to prove they are being harmed and not of the fracking industry to prove their process and the hazardous waste generated from it is safe.

This is incredibly heartbreaking and disgraceful. This memorial is a Lawrenceville landmark and honors our neighbors who served our country from WWI through the Korean War. War is ugly enough, it doesn’t need to be met with equally ugly acts of vandalism.

Preparation ≠ Panic . Social distancing is a proactive measure that allows us to "flatten the curve" for healthcare providers and effectively slow the spread of the virus. Leaders have a duty to model best practices and make choices that keep our neighbors safe and healthy.
Q: What is a community mitigation plan? . A: Community mitigation plans are steps taken on a larger scale to slow the spread of disease, like:.• putting off large public gatherings or using technology instead.• allowing for teleworking or tele-education.• social distancing

This. Our streets should be designed for people, not cars. 7-year-olds who want to ride to their friend's house, folks who use wheelchairs, cyclists on their way to work. Everyone deserves to feel safe on the roads that connect our communities.
💯7-year-old Alice Lahale, of Morningside. is limited to the sidewalk in front of her house for safety reasons, and she’s not happy about it. “It’s really boring going back and forth,” she said. Where does she want to go?. “Two blocks; maybe three.”.🙌.

The @USPS is a critical thread in our social fabric: these dedicated carriers and essential operations provide a lifeline to vulnerable neighbors, connect our rural communities, and keep our society functioning and whole. We need Congress to #SaveThePostalService.
Maurice is our mail carrier: he drops into our district office with documentary recommendations, deep questions, and daily updates on the neighborhood. He keeps an eye on our older neighbors and checks in with them on his route. A++ public servant and person 📬♥️

It’s easy to focus on protests because it’s hard to capture the communal good: porch donations of diapers and formula, labor organizations supporting food banks, folks getting groceries for their more vulnerable neighbors. A better world is possible by harnessing exactly this.
We’ve also seen a remarkable capacity for adaptation, resiliency and care through this crisis. We need to make sure this sentiment continues as we seek to build a healthier, safer and cleaner world. #BuildBetterTogether.

Mandatory minimums are as cruel as they are ineffective. People are dying and we're tired of petty political game-playing--we should be hearing evidence-based recommendations and policies in our committees and on the floor.
‘Tough on crime’ policies do not help communities suffering from the epidemic of gun violence – they only help politicians get re-elected. When gun violence reduction came up I felt compelled to urge my fellow legislations to take real, effective action to address gun violence.
