He/Him. PA State Rep for Squirrel Hill, Shadyside, Greenfield, Oakland, Pt Breeze & Regent Sq. House Majority Health Com Chair
#PassTheAntiHateCrimesPackage
PA Rs aim to vote today to add to the state constitution: “The policy of Pennsylvania is to protect the life of every unborn child from conception to birth.” This will sidestep the courts and allow the GOP majority to march in every ban and punitive measure you can imagine. (1/3)
The GOP passed this anti-abortion, election suppression bill through the Senate under cover of night, tabled my amendments, and refused to begin the House debate until most of PA started their weekend.
There’s no hiding from this. Pennsylvanians are watching.
#SB106
PA is going to get $1.6B for bridge and road repair. Under the bipartisan infrastructure deal, especially older cities have a lot of lead pipes, lead pipes are going to be removed” -Secretary Jennifer Granholm
^This is what infrastructure week looks like
This entire statement is chilling, but calling for the immediate termination of Pitt’s Jewish student orgs is a clear effort to isolate and demonize a group of people for their ethnic and religious heritage.
This is not a close call: it’s antisemitism, and it’s dangerous.
This is a crisis for PA’s efforts to reduce maternal mortality, to create gender equality, and for the health & stability of children and families.
We won't stop fighting, but Rs need to know PA wants choice- call your legislators and tell them that abortion is healthcare! (3/3)
Any rational person can see that deadly firearms should be regulated at least as much as, say, swimming pools or lawnmowers.
How many lives will be lost before Republicans join as at the table to meaningfully address gun violence?
The GOP likely has the votes to get this passed, and constitutional amendment bills CANNOT be vetoed. If they’re still in the majority next year, they will pass it again, and then it goes onto the ballot. Democrats will use every tool we have to fight this at every step. (2/3)
Yesterday, Republicans amended the PA's annual contribution to
@PittTweet
's in-state tuition to say it will only be paid out if Pitt’s research is conducted in accordance with their far-right agenda.
No thanks. Nobody wants to attend the University of House Republicans.
You saw them in Denver, Austin, Nashville and Santa Fe, and now they're HERE in Harrisburg, fighting for reasonable firearm legislation.
The era of doing nothing is coming to a close, and
@momsdemand
&
@ceasefirepa
have fought alongside of us for every inch.
As Co-Chair of the Jewish Legislative Caucus and the rep of a Jewish community, I’m disappointed to hear that Rep. Lee will be speaking Sat. alongside individuals who have made antisemitic comments and praised the October 7th attack. I urge her to reconsider her decision.
As of this morning, Allegheny County only has FIVE Pediatric ICU beds available. We are running alarmingly close needing to triage pediatric intensive care in Allegheny County. It takes a village to raise a child. Be safe, please.
The
#PAHouse
was called to session today and the
@PAHouseGOP
showed up to do our job. We were ready, we had rules, we had the votes. Democrats obstructed our business and left before our work even began.
Stephen Zappala’s apparent use of his office to punish an attorney for comments acknowledging systemic racism in our justice system is disturbing and should be fully investigated.
NEW: The NRA just hit a 10-year membership low of just 4.3M members and ended 2022 over $10M in the red. The “nonprofit” has hemorrhaged over 1M members since 2019.
Our organization is now more than twice the size of the NRA with 10 million supporters.
Last weekend,
@GovernorTomWolf
signed a guestbook at the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial with the names of the victims of the Tree of Life shooting nearly one year ago.
He also wrote: “100% tolerance; 0% hate.”
I’m eternally grateful to the many colleagues, constituents & kind strangers who have surrounded me with support in the face of anti-Semitism. I never doubted that this commonwealth stands for tolerance and diversity, but it’s a wonderful thing to see it in action
#NoPlaceForHate
Instead of voting on sending employees back to work unprotected, the
#PAHouse
should be working with health experts and government leaders to enact a coordinated plan of action for research, testing and enhanced social safety nets.
#PutPeopleFirstPA
The House Republicans can go to sleep tonight knowing that they pulled out every last trick to stop us from passing legislation to get justice for child victims of sexual assault.
And Dems can go to sleep knowing that we're going to get it done anyway.
Vandalizing Chabad of Squirrel Hill and the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh is an attack on the values of tolerance, respect and community we as Pittsburghers hold dear. Hate has no place in Pittsburgh or anywhere else, and we must stand together to denounce such acts.
The trans military ban has been done away with, but transgender people still face high levels of violence and discrimination. I'm working with State
@RepBenham
,
@malcolmkenyatta
, &
@BrianSimsPA
to re-introduce comprehensive civil right legislation
Our neighbors in New Jersey, New York, and Virginia have already taken steps to legalize recreational cannabis for adults. There’s broad support for doing the same here. Now it’s time to make it happen!
@MomsDemand
and
@SDAwesternPA
are always welcome in my office. Parents & students have a lot to lose from gun violence, and a lot to say about the world we are shaping for tomorrow's adults.
We should listen.
PA state Rep. Stephanie Borowicz (R) brags that she yelled at Moms Demand Action volunteers and said she wouldn't let them into her office: "I always say 'God and guns got us here, and God and guns will keep us here' ... [Moms Demand] you're not getting anywhere in my office."
We endured the deadliest antisemitic attack on American soil just 4 years ago. But our community is not characterized by the hatred that took the lives of our friends & neighbors. It's characterized by the strength, kindness and tolerance that we have shown the world in response.
It's not ok to retaliate against our Jewish community members here in Pittsburgh for a foreign conflict they cannot control. We must find a way forward that doesn’t target neighbors and tear apart our city.
The Rainbow Room and every safe place like it is literally saving the lives of children and young adults, year after year.
Much appreciation to my friend
@SenSantarsiero
who steps in front of these ugly, bad faith attacks.
Statement from Rep. Frankel:
“My heart aches for the loss to our city and our community. The Tree of Life has provided comfort and support to families for decades. Our whole community is in mourning. I stand with them, and all our neighbors in grief."
Today we honor the 11 souls ripped from us on 10/27/2018 by an anti-Semitic gunman. Even in unbearable grief, our strong, resilient and loving community continues to show the world Tikkun Olam. Squirrel Hill will be known not only for its loss, but also for its grace.
I am calling on the PA Supreme Court to stop evictions of tenants who have applied for the Emergency Rental Assistance Program and are waiting for their applications to be processed.
🧵Today, we have the chance to finally pass the Fairness Act, which would outlaw discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression.
LGBTQ+ rights have had a long and frustrating history in PA. (1/6)
Congratulations to my dear friend, GOVERNOR Josh Shapiro!
Here's a throwback photo of the two of us when he was first elected to the House of Representatives. Now let’s get to work!
#GovernorShapiro
#Pennsylvania
#InaugurationDay
This week, we hope to finally pass legislation in the PA House that will require both private and public insurance to cover contraception.
#HB1140
is about:
✅ healthcare access
✅ gender equality
✅ bodily autonomy
Finally passing the
#FairnessAct
will tell every young person, every parent, every worker & every student that PA stands with its LGBTQ+ people.
Let's get it done🏳️🌈
At a time when we are seeing a resurgence in actual Nazi ideology, rooted in the same white supremacy that led to the extermination of 6 million Jews, I feel strongly that we should keep casual mentions of the ‘Nazi Regime’ out of our good faith policy debates.
PA House Speaker Mike Turzai at anti-abortion event compares abortion advocates to Nazis then says “every human being is beautiful.”
Turzai for years has blocked passage of PA Fairness Act, which would give LGBTQ people same civil rights as everyone else
Some promising news to start off the week-- researchers at the
@PittTweet
and University of Louisville have formulated a nasal spray that could act as a preventative measure against COVID-19.
I'm not going to stop talking about the dangers of Gab or any public official who aligns with it.
To ignore it or pretend that it's "just talk" puts too many people at risk.
Some House Republicans knew for a week that one of theie members, who had been active in hearings and other group settings, had tested positive, yet did not inform anyone else.

Thank you, survivors. Thank you, jury.
Let us remember that the survivors reopened these wounds and participated in this process for us -- for humanity -- because there has to be a record.
The work to hold back hateful ideologies and violence stands on history.
.
@RepScottPerry
is unfit for office. He has repeatedly shown himself to be allied with white nationalism, and I believe his reckless actions endanger Pennsylvanians. (1/4)
Scoop: GOP Rep. Scott Perry shared an antisemitic meme on Facebook earlier this week — promoting an image of stereotypically Jewish bankers with hooked noses playing Monopoly.
The Perry campaign removed the post this afternoon after JI sought comment.
Exciting steps forward in marijuana decriminalization in Pennsylvania, but if we are to
#legalizeit
, we must repair the damages criminalization caused the marginalized communities from aggressive enforcement. That includes expungement of marijuana-related offenses.
Pennsylvania Senators Discuss Marijuana Legalization For First Time At GOP-Led Committee Hearing: "In my opinion, by continuing to ignore this issue, we are supporting criminal enterprises."
After the attack on PGH synagogues 5 yrs ago, I started writing new bills to ensure that all of Pennsylvania’s vulnerable groups could feel safe and protected. Today, the PA House passed 3 anti-hate crimes bills on a bipartisan basis. Onto the Senate!
140 characters will never be enough to express the grief and rage that I feel with every new case of lives lost to gun violence. A classroom of children is too much to bear. I promise, again, I will never stop working to end gun violence.
Your passion for an issue does not give you access to this universal example of evil and suffering to make political points. That email was vile, offensive and untrue, and the organizations responsible for it should apologize.
13% of LGBTQ+ youth reported being subjected to conversion therapy, with 83% reporting it occurred when they were under 18. It's time Pennsylvania protects our
#LGBTQ
+ youth from these barbaric practices.
The outpouring of support from around the world for Pittsburgh in the face of this tragedy is a gratifying reminder that ultimately, people want to be united.
#StrongerThanHate
The terrifying scene unfolding in a Texas synagogue will reopen scars for many people in our community. Please check on each other, and don’t be afraid to ask for help.
Today, the
#Pennsylvania
House of Representatives voted to remove homosexuality from the criminal code.
This isn’t anywhere near enough to guarantee many Pennsylvanians can live openly - not by a long shot.
Today was only a tiny step forward towards true
#LGBTQ
+ equality.
I have long held that if the state and federal government will not step in to protect citizens from gun violence then cities should do so. It is time for the state legislature to listen to voters and give them the ability to do so.
Philadelphia has now joined Pittsburgh in passing gun regulations to protect its citizens from the epidemic of gun violence. It is time for the state legislature to get out of the way of local decisions by local governments to protect their citizens.
Allegheny County has created an online tool so that members of the public can report COVID-19 home test results and provide a more complete picture to public health officials. If you have a positive test result, report it as soon as possible here:
In a win for patients, health care providers, and the state, a bipartisan majority of the House today passed my bill to ban restrictive noncompete agreements from medical employer contracts with doctors, nurses and other health care practitioners.
We've raised 3 terrific kids and built 2 careers that allow us to do what we love and make a difference. Everything started 41 years ago when these two love-drunk youngsters made it official. Happy anniversary, Debbie Frankel!!!
No cause is served by isolating Jewish and Israeli children and making them feel unsafe. As antisemitic incidents continue to spike, it’s up to the adults to ensure that ALL students are supported, regardless of their faith, ethnicity or national origin.
Over 21,000 Pennsylvanians depend on the more affordable, high-quality education offered by
@PittTweet
to build their careers. I will fight this petty effort to penalize our students for unrelated fights in Harrisburg.
Today is my friend
@RepGainey

Thoughts and prayers are important—but public policy is necessary. There are more than 20+ bills in the

that could address

#Breaking
The PA Fairness Act just passed the

and is on to the Senate! This bill would finally put a stop to discrimination against the LGBTQ community. Thank you to my colleagues who helped get this out of the House especially
@RepKenyatta
@RepBenham
and
@RepDanFrankel
Many ppl have come to believe that, at the end of the day, the Supreme Court will protect reproductive rights. If that was ever true, it's not now. We need to sound the alarm and truly fight like abortion rights are in peril. Because they absolutely are.

Congratulations to the HCL workers at Google, who voted to unionize with
@steelworkers
. Our industrial past informs our present and future; it’s a testament to the evolving role of tech & the mobilization of workers that their efforts were successful.
I've walked down these steps thousands of times, and this was the best one 💜
In all seriousness, we must take care of our PA nurses, so that they can take care of us.
I'm voting "NO" on HB637 today.
#RGGI
will cut carbon pollution from power plants, create jobs, cut energy costs, and kickstart green energy investment in Pennsylvania.
I'm not interested in playing political games with Pennsylvania's future.
Changing your name in PA is not a smooth process. It takes nearly $1,000, an appearance before a judge, and a public notice in 2 local papers. This arduous process has consequences, especially for the transgender community. It's time for
#NameChangeReform
Maybe we can take advantage of this moment to acknowledge that harassment and attacks on vulnerable groups can sometimes be invisible outside of those communities. (1/3)
The PA Jewish Legislative Caucus condemns today's antisemitic attack of vandalism on Chabad of Squirrel Hill and the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh. We will stand strong together against hatred in any form.
I am delighted to report that “Susan’s and Emily’s Law”, HB 140, passed the PA House unanimously today. This legislation would allow municipalities to create parking-protected bike lanes— making our roads safer for everyone. It now advances to the PA Senate.
Abortion is legal in Pennsylvania, no matter if you live here or if you are traveling from another state seeking care.
Governor Shapiro launched a website to help anyone find a provider, make a plan to get an abortion, and find a way to help cover the costs in Pennsylvania.
⬇️
Today, we’re launching a new Commonwealth website to provide resources to women seeking abortion care.
I want to be clear:
Reproductive health care decisions should be made by women — not extremist politicians or radical court rulings.
Find facts:
I'm pleased that Jeffrey Romoff’s time at the helm of UPMC is ending. Under his reign, UPMC has used its strength and expertise to extract from our community. Now, UPMC could finally give Pittsburgh the healthcare provider, employer, & neighbor it deserves.
My anti-hate crimes package passed the House more than 8 months ago. The Senate's refusal to take up these bills denies law enforcement and schools the training and tools they need to protect LGBTQ+ and other vulnerable Pennsylvanians.

🧵I'll never understand how the same party that wants to block access to abortion care won’t lift a finger to make parenthood feasible.
Like, maybe raise the minimum wage and improve access to healthcare and high quality childcare?
Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, nonbinary, and gender-conforming candidates made waves this year. Locally, my friend
@jessicalbenham
was elected to 36th district, & will be the first openly LGBTQ+ woman elected tot the Pennsylvania state legislature.
I have been fighting for LGBTQ+ protection for my entire career. If Republican leaders would schedule the vote, Pennsylvania could join the 22 states that have made clear that all are welcome and protected. We will fight until we win, because it is the right thing to do.
I didn’t think I could still be shocked by the PA GOP’s cynical legislative maneuvering, but this one took my breath away. HB140 is called “Emily and Susan’s Law” in part after Susan Hicks, a constituent of mine who was struck and killed while she biked through Oakland in 2015.
Pa Senate Republicans played politics with the noncontroversial bill to legalize parking protected bike lanes in the state. Here's a dive into what they did and why we had to oppose the bill we worked on for 5 years
FINALLY: we fought for and won real cyber charter reform and accountability in the

budgets.
Please keep clear of the Tree of Life Synagogue area. We are monitoring the situation from a safe distance. Please keep the victims in your prayers and thank you to our brave first responders.
What a privilege to get to second the nomination of the formidable and brilliant
@RepMcClinton
to be Speaker of the PA House. The future is bright, Pennsylvania! 😎
Let’s leave no room for confusion: The Holocaust was the targeted extermination of 6 million Jews for their faith and their ethnicity, along with many others.
The Pennsylvania GOP, the same people crying a mask mandate is a 'government overreach,' is demanding the names, address, and partial social security numbers of every voter registered as of last November.
What a beautiful day to celebrate the year of the Rabbit! Thank you to
@OCAPittsburgh
and
@SquirrelHillMag
for planning festivities to honor this joyful tradition
