No matter what you think about the Shadyside lentil tire deflators, their actions have increased awareness about the dangers of large vehicles and SUVs in dense urban areas. Let's look at some stats.
Hi-viz clothing has no effect on driver passing distances. The researchers suggest that improvements to infrastructure are a more effective means of improving rider safety than changing clothing habits.

@lvpgh
: A new underpass with a big impact just opened under the 40th St bridge, leading to a brand new section of trail through the Arsenal 201 development between 39th & 40th.
..This makes a safe passageway between lower and upper Lawrenceville!
"Cities shouldn’t just invest in places where cycling is high; rather, cities should invest in places where cycling would be high given the right infrastructure"
We were called zealots last night in a public meeting about a protected bike lane. Yes, we are zealots for street designs that save lives, zealots for addressing climate change, zealots for cleaner air, zealots for healthy and affordable transportation. Zealots for a better PGH.

25% of PGH households do not have access to a car. Decades of car dominance has made many of our neighborhoods dangerous to get around, namely lower-income communities who rely the most on walking, transit, & biking. We NEED safe, affordable, & convenient transportation options!
This bridge is a very important connection for people walking and biking in addition to transit users and drivers. Underneath there's a very popular walking, biking, and cross country skiing trail. We hope everyone is ok.
"She was not crossing along a crosswalk, Ross Township police Detective Brian Kohlhepp said."
This is shameful. There are literally no crosswalks anywhere on McKnight road. If you have to cross it by foot you need to cross it outside of a crosswalk.
📣BIG NEWS: Allegheny Valley Railroad has agreed to sell ARP the Brilliant Line!
This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to connect communities and create safe trails for all to enjoy.

Did you know that there are more than 800 sets of public outdoor stairways in Pittsburgh? That’s more than any other city in the United States!
Check out this awesome map that shows all of the stairways in the city ⬇️
🎉 An enormous improvement and a huge win for biking and walking + access to Frick Park 🎉
As of today, the Forbes Ave two-way protected bike lane, Fern Hollow Bridge, and pedestrian improvements are OPEN!
The
#StripDistrict
is growing, and is already choking on cars.
If people don’t have an alternative to driving, then traffic and parking will become much worse while walking and biking becomes less safe.
Scene on Gem Way behind Kraynick’s Bike Shop on Penn Avenue. Rear wall collapsed sometime early this morning, sending bricks and bike parts to the ground.
We lost a neighbor yesterday, Pittsburgh. Allegedly stealing a bicycle should never lead to the police using deadly force. Our sympathies to Jim Rogers and his friends and family.
Councilman
@bobbywilson412
introduced legislation to officially prohibit parking in bike lanes. Currently, all bike lanes need a "no parking" sign. This would make the prohibition the default, and make it clear that bike lanes are for people riding bikes
@nochnayavedma_
Thanks for asking. Our objections are: it's designed as a hwy bridge instead of a neighborhood bridge in a park; there is no need for 4 lanes; the place for bikes and scooters should not take the place of a sidewalk; a redesign of Forbes Ave must inform the design of the bridge

Meanwhile, a single light cycle at Negley/Penn yesterday saw 3 separate bike commuters in front of me, 3 behind, and ~7 drivers in line next to us.
In my very short amount of time riding home, I saw countless others riding too. 🚲
Forbes is a popular bike commuting route. Here's an alternate bicycling route to detour around the collapsed bridge: S Dallas->Reynolds Neighborway->Hawthorne Trail->Kensington->S Braddock

💭 Imagine living in a place where everything you and your family needs is within a safe 15-minute walk or bike ride.
As we embark on our first-ever comprehensive city plan, Pittsburgh can make this a reality.
Pittsburgh is planning to purchase a nine-block section of abandoned rail line in the Strip District for an extension of a riverfront trail that officials hope will someday run unobstructed from Point State Park to the Highland Park Bridge.
Have you biked or walked Penn Circle yet??
TY
@PghDOMI
for making it happen!
This project has been nearly 10 years in the making and also would not have happened without BikePGH's advocacy. Every day, we're helping to make Pittsburgh safer for people who bike, walk, and roll.
Drivers: 😠 Bicyclists riding in the street are in my way!
Advocates & the City: 💡Let's put in bike lanes to keep ppl riding safer AND get them out of the way of drivers
Drivers: 😠 Bicyclists should just ride in the street so I can park illegally in the bike lanes
Have you checked out the new bike lanes that
@PghDOMI
installed on Brighton Rd and California Ave in the
#northside
yet? They even have a few blocks of parking protection! 😍
@moveforwardpgh

The character of streets changes when traffic patterns change - Penn Circle isn't a trash can, it's an important neighborhood connection.
Last week, we picked up the trash.. now let's keep it clean! Huge thanks to everyone who came out to help.
Our hearts go out to the family and friends of Will Theisen, the bicyclist whose life was taken too soon on Stanton Ave early Saturday morning. May you find peace in his memories.

At 725 this morning there were 3 cars and a motorcycle parked in the revised and improved (?) bike lane along Penn Ave, including a truck behind the few protective bollards left, which I’m not sure will be reinstalled.

Please help 6-year-old Jamel's mom with funeral costs and legal fees. A driver struck and killed Jamel while he was riding his bicycle on Johnston Ave near his home. This is an absolute tragedy.
Congrats to Sharpsburg for winning $25M in Fed funds to connect to the Allegheny River, part of which will extend the Three Rivers Heritage Trail to Millvale!
This is ridiculous, dangerous, and unacceptable. A landscaper left these in the bike lanes before they eventually got around to cleaning it up. When a pile of debris isn't in this lane, parked cars are. It's time for the City to take this issue seriously.
@TheNextPGH
@pgh_scanner
We're in an epidemic of pedestrian deaths. Careless, victim-blaming attitudes just may perpetuate it.
Drivers have a huge responsibility, operating 2 ton death traps. We need to look out for our fellow humans, especially when you know it's move-in week.
UPDATE: In his latest budget Mayor Gainey is allocating the funds to upgrade the Penn Ave bike lane to help keep cars out of it. The budget still has to be passed by council, but this is great news. Thanks to everyone who advocated for this project and thanks

Today the City of Pittsburgh launched a “Universal Basic Mobility” pilot, which will provide up to 100 local low-income residents w/monthly Port Authority transit subscriptions and shared mobility services (bike share + e-scooter share + car share) to address mobility insecurity.
This intersection is inhospitable to people walking and biking and should be completely redesigned. The community has been asking for this for years. Everyone who has ever walked or biked through this intersection has taken their life in their hands.
We were just notified that there was a crash early this morning that killed a man crossing the intersection of Penn and Centre. The car rolled and the driver left the scene. This is the 4th deadly crash involving a person walking this year.
The new Point State Park connector trail is due to open soon!

We're saddened to learn that a driver killed a pedestrian in the Strip District. Our hearts go out to the family of the victim.
There's little info, but what we all know that the Strip is hostile to peds and bikes, and change cannot come soon enough
We've updated our recommended bicycling detour around the collapsed bridge on Forbes Ave. We are now recommending 🚲Beechwood->Wilkins->S Dallas->Reynolds->Hawthorne Trail->Kensington->S Braddock
Bike lanes do more than help people riding bikes. The Penn Ave bike lanes in Downtown, reduced pedestrian crashes by 32%, while overall crashes were reduced by 26%.
