to what it was during my nearly 15 years there: an independent agency where the law drives the work, not the personal agenda of the occupant of the White House
Did you know? A person can steal your tv or pet and if either is worth over $1500 it's a felony - always. But they can steal your wages in ANY amount and it's a misdemeanor - always. How is that right? It isn't. Think it deters wage theft? It doesn't. Time to get this done.
High capacity magazine problem in RI is real. Of 143 gun cases we charged in last 4 months of 2021, 24 involved mags of 16-29 rounds. 14 involved mags of 30 rounds or more. More bullets in the air w/o reloading means more injury/death. Let's get the legislation banning them done.
It’s a misdemeanor to steal $10,000 of a worker’s wages. It’s a felony to steal a $1000 tv. That’s a problem. That’s not right. That’s an injustice. And it’s why we’ll keep fighting to fix it.
NEW: Rhode Island recovered about $1.6M of back wages unlawfully withheld from over 500 workers from 2020 through 2022.

Grateful to the people of Rhode Island for the chance to return to where my public service career began over twenty years ago. And proud to swear in all the fine Assistant and Special Assistant Attorneys General as my first act this am. The journey begins.

calls Peter Neronha one of the state's "most notable trolls" for the AG's recent posts (on this platform). "It’s playground behavior that he seems to rationalize because they’re often the ones who started it."
Russia on Friday released a list of 500 Americans who are no longer welcome to enter that country — and a few New Englanders made the cut, including Rhode Island Attorney General
@PeterNeronha
.
Love the Celtics as much as anybody. But if we showed as much enthusiasm for getting a bridge built as for the Larry O’Brien Trophy (let alone the Independent Man) we might actually get a bid to get a bridge built. And then a bridge built.
Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha announced that a Woonsocket man has been found guilty of stealing 10 cases of Don Julio tequila worth almost $3,000 from his employer in 2021.
Twitter friends and followers: when I’m exercising my First Amendment right and you don’t like my observations - there’s always that mute button. I find it useful from time to time.
Check out this sign: there hasn’t been ice on this pond for 20 plus years. Sign problem? No. Climate change problem. Jamestown kids for generations including my own used to play hockey on this pond w/o issue. We need to pick up our pace on climate. It won’t wait.

First Circuit Court of Appeals today UPHELD RI ban on large capacity magazines. Complete and convincing win for the state. Grateful to the Assistant Attorneys General who worked this case so brilliantly. We truly are stronger than ever.
How is it that Paxlovid costs 1000 dollars out of pocket for a 95 year old person on Medicare? Are we trying to kill people? And how is it that this comes as a surprise to me? Healthcare in this country is just ridiculous.
Is it me or is the Providence train station looking a little tarnished these days? Coming in from NYC/new Moynihan Train Hall Station, it was quite a difference. Dirty. Peeling paint everywhere. 1 way escalator. Surely we can do better. Can we at least do a power wash? 1/2
I’ll be out for a bit w/ surgery but the office is in good hands with the best Deputy AG in the country! Adi Goldstein and I have worked together at DOJ and at RIAG for over 20 years. There is no one I have more confidence in. Fun fact: she speaks four languages! Does she tweet?
“Get off my sand”? Please. And when some ask why we need (or actually oppose) a well-resourced, top-notch AG Office, this is why we need one Because it is only this Office that can/will take on this kind of high-stakes litigation for the people of Rhode Island. We’re ready.
The Sackler family drove the opioid crisis, took billions of dollars out of Purdue Pharma, moved it into their family accounts offshore, and then put the company in bankruptcy. They aren’t entitled to bankruptcy protection. They aren’t bankrupt. They’re loaded. We fight on.
Big news on the opioid settlement talks. RI was one of nine holdout states that had refused to join this settlement;
@AGNeronha
has said he didn't feel it went far enough. Now a judge agrees.
It has been the greatest privilege of my professional life to serve as Attorney General the past four years. Thanks to everyone who has walked the road with me and made four more years possible. We'll keep fighting for Rhode Islanders. Together.
Ok - there’s been a lot of discussion today so here’s where we stand. B/c my Office joined 17 other AGs in a lawsuit in Washington state (Mass didn’t) the FDA must make mifepristone available in RI + 16 other states/DC. So-women/doctors still have access to this medication. 🧵
Probably a day to remind ourselves that the APRA is a floor, not a ceiling. Meaning that just because you think you can withhold a public record doesn’t mean you have to.
Presumably fed highway funds have paid for continuous reconstruction of that bridge. Just like when I was USA & we went after Cardi for failing to build 195 bridge the right way, there will be federal DOT IG investigation into this & someone will pay very justifiable price. 1/2
Signs of a failing system? According to federal CMS data, median ER wait time in RI is 241 minutes. 4 hrs. That’s the median. Coming in at a stellar 49 out of 50 states. So next time someone tells you who cares if a hospital closes, tell them you do.
From Providence to Warwick to Newport to Westerly, we’ll continue to fight so that every - every - Rhode Islander can have access to the shore. Because that’s a public right, not a private one.
#peopleslawfirm
Is there an outcry from voters who voted early? Or are the calls coming from those who have long opposed early voting? If the latter, who cares? I believe most/all early voters understand they are getting convenience at the expense of knowledge of a late breaking surprise.
Democrat Don Carlson’s decision to drop out of Rhode Island’s First Congressional District race on Sunday is prompting renewed calls to limit early voting or to adopt ranked-choice voting.
Not that you ever had a chance, Mr. Perennial Candidate (which party is it this year?), but you’re not getting my vote. My goal every year is to give
@kathyprojo
my returns b4 she has to ask. You want to serve the public - hand ‘em over. Let voters see what you are made of.
A former prosecutor and good friend told me today: “If you tweet anything today tell them to [insert cuss word here] open all lanes on the Jamestown and Newport Bridges and no tolls.” Done.
Why do Twitter trolls get so upset when the people they repeatedly attempt to torment/insult mute them? Because their self-perceived power is taken away. It’s sort of like when my father takes his hearing aids out when I’m talking to him. I at least get the point.
The General Assembly deserves much praise for saving the lead paint registry from the Governor’s chopping block and choosing kids over slumlords. I am grateful. Two respectful requests. Dump the Council from CRMC. Won’t cost a dime. And dump pay day lending. It’s a disgrace.
I must say that it would be a highly unusual situation for the State Police to be conducting a criminal investigation involving two high ranking public officials for two months without contacting my office. In my 12 plus years as US Attorney & AG that has never happened. Ever.
Ex-DoA Director Jim Thorsen doesn't come off well here either
Patten kept asking Thorsen if he could take home something free from a Scout tenant
“It’s de minimis,” Thorsen kept replying - State House shorthand for gifts that don't trigger ethics rules
Here’s why I use it. To raise awareness re where critical action is needed, like healthcare & climate. To amplify and explain the work of the Office where necessary. And to sometimes have just a little fun. And my plans? That will have to wait.
After deep reflection, I am now resisting the urge to sign my texts, on the assumption that everyone whom I text has my number in their contacts (I can assure you that the reverse is not true).. Thanks for the input all! Including sons 1 and 2.

Pro tip. The Attorney General is an independent constitutional officer. He or she works directly for the people of RI. We are not a “department.” Thank god.
Open invitation to any legislator who thinks the Office’s superb prosecutors aren’t “enforcing the laws we already have.” Come visit the Office and shadow them for a day in court. You have our number. Ask for me.
I asked this very question of my team today. Given what we’re seeing in solar industry, we need to inform RI’ers “How to go Green w/o getting ripped off.” We have to make this easy, not hard. Whether it be heat pumps/electric 🚗/solar panels. AG consumer team has new challenge.
My furnace is pretty old and I'm intrigued by switching to heat pumps. But boy, the number of different subsidy/incentive/rebate programs is kinda overwhelming.
There's clearly lots of money being thrown at this but will the average homeowner be able to navigate the process?
Media: I don’t play golf so we can’t chat on the course. But if you want to visit the office to talk about our ongoing work in healthcare, environmental and consumer protection, public safety, protecting kids from lead poisoning and more, the door is always open.
Great to join other former US Attorneys from all administrations (back to JFK!) at annual conference to discuss big data/privacy, criminal justice reform, the state of the Justice Department and more.

Ran into some incredibly impressive OBGYN residents who were at the State House to lend their voices and support to passage of the EACA. Grateful for their advocacy. Every woman in RI should have access to abortion care. Abortion is healthcare.
To understand why I’ve spoken up for my Office lately, consider this: Delaware AG has exactly same mission as ours & serves same population. She has 200 lawyers. I have 100. We’re too small/stretched too thin. Yet we’ve delivered & will deliver more w/ the staff I’ve asked for.
We joined other AGs in Washington state to ensure nothing changed here in RI. And won. So RI women and their doctors can go forward as they always have. Are there fights ahead? Sure. And we’ll continue to be in them.
Enormous thank you to the doctors/nurses/staff at Lifespan/Brown Norman Prince Spine Institute and Plastic Surgeons who operated on & cared for me last week. I was in such good hands; Shelly and I are so grateful. Making progress at home. Thanks all who kept a thought/reached out
Walking down hall today and heard “klack klack klack.” I backed up to confirm - a typewriter - in 2023! Amazing AG HR Specialist Sharon filling out …… state HR forms. Sigh. When we’re done we’ll send it to Sec. Amore’s archives. If Sharon doesn’t toss it out the window first.
If a post purports to be from you, but you didn’t take the 30 sec. to write it, what good is it? It’s not your genuine voice. I think the public deserves that. Same reason why I always offer to speak to a print or tv reporter directly. Most take me up on that offer. Some don’t.

Things I’ve learned about Twitter recently. Use it more and people notice. They wonder why you’re using it more. They speculate about your future plans. They weigh in on whether your good at your job. Or really really bad at it. All fair game. 1/2
I’m w/ Lynn Blais on this one. Speaking broadly, there are too many non-profits that compensate top mgmt at a rate well beyond what’s reasonable. Running a non-profit ought to be a form of public service. You shouldn’t get paid as if you’re running US Steel. Need to ponder this.
Lifespan, RI's biggest nonprofit hospital group, paid CEO Tim Babienau $3.1 million in 2021
That was actually a pay cut versus 2020 because his bonus was only $50K
Another perk: Lifespan covered his membership at the East Side's exclusive University Club
Memo to government agencies: stop reflexively listening to your in-house lawyers. Particularly when it obstructs my Office’s work on behalf of Rhode Islanders. I always find a work-around. And then you look - well - obstructionist - More to come.
Grateful to House for unanimously supporting 15 positions for my Office that will work cold cases, violent crime, healthcare, environmental and consumer protection and more. Paid for out of legal fees we’ve recovered from lawsuits we’ve brought! Total win for people of RI!
I suppose I’m glad that the City welcomes our involvement. Re Mr. Mota, who of course is not the City, to the extent he welcomes our involvement, I suspect that’s likely to change.

If someone calls you offering to extend your vehicle warranty, and it’s coming from a place, say, like Jamestown, and they can’t even tell you which vehicle they are talking about - even Inspector Clouseau knows: it’s a scam. Hang up.

Visiting the folks tonite. My father caught this 50 pound 4 ounce striper on twenty pound test line in 1963. It’s been hanging on the wall in my parents’ house ever since. Same age as me. I’ve never asked. But if he had to choose between us I think he’d choose the fish.
This dome has no independent man. It even has a hole in the roof. But it’s been around since 600 AD. And it’s pretty cool. The Pantheon!

We’ve seen more than enough evidence that this change is absolutely necessary. Giving this much control over our coastal resources to political appointees with no experience in environmental matters continues to lead to absurd results. At best.
Last night, Deputy Chief Sarah Rice & Policy & Legislative Counsel Alison Fonseca testified about our Office’s legislation which would replace the CRMC with a new Dept. of Coastal Resources to ensure meaningful & transparent regulation, & better protection of RI’s treasured coast
A profound thank you to the amazing people who have been a part of this journey. Grateful for the opportunity to serve the people of RI as your next Attorney General.
As I said, our win last week in federal court wouldn’t be the last time we’d have to fight for the right of all Rhode Islanders to access the shore. But we’re ready for the fights that lie ahead. And there’s no client I’d rather represent than the people of this great state.
15 positions to work cold cases, healthcare, energy and environment, consumer protection and violent crime. Enormously grateful that General Assembly leadership had the vision to include these investments in my Office in proposed budget. We’ll continue to deliver for RI’ers.
Think we aren’t aggressively enforcing existing gun laws? We are. Think high capacity magazines aren’t a threat to Rhode Islanders and our men and women in blue? They are. The problem isn’t hypothetical. It’s real. Let’s get the bills passed.

Generally speaking, when someone is asked about a big problem facing the public, but can’t refer you to what the plan to fix it is, or even who specifically is working on the fix, and then tells you not to worry about it, there is really only one smart reaction. Worry about it.
No potato tossing here. Just understanding our lane & staying in it. We do criminal investigations. We bring civil cases on behalf of RI’ers. We don’t run elections. We are aggressively independent in exercising our authority to fight for RI’ers. And we answer to no one else
The Rhode Island electoral investigation into the problematic signatures found on nomination forms submitted by Sabina Matos’ campaign for the First Congressional District is becoming a game of hot potato.
And just this morning I learned that my primary care doctor is moving on! So I understand RI’ers frustrations. I am sincerely grateful that Independent Man landed safely. But if we don’t land the primary care/overall healthcare plane, we’re all going to be in a world of hurt.
The exodus of primary care providers & inability to recruit new ones is complicated. But one thing Brown could do & appears not to be doing is identifying RI’ers graduating from med schools elsewhere & applying for residencies in primary care & recruiting them back to RI & Brown
500 children are lead poisoned in Rhode Island every year. 500. So we took action. Results so far? Since last fall, 17 lawsuits. 39 properties remediated. We'll keep going until every Rhode Island child is safe from lead in their home.

500 RI children are diagnosed with lead poisoning every year. 500. Remediating lead paint isn't difficult and it isn't expensive. If landlords won't do the right thing on their own, we'll keep taking them to court to make sure they do. Because children deserve better. Way better.

Let’s get this done. The CRMC has outlived its usefulness. A professional agency will make more rational decisions and better protect our beautiful coastline.
Advocates are making an end-of-session push for legislation that would eliminate the politically appointed Rhode Island's Coastal Resources Management Council — a major environmental issue in a state with 420 miles of coastline.
And let’s be clear ….. getting rid of a bunch of unqualified political appointees and private counsel and allowing the existing professional staff to do its job isn’t going to cost any more money. In fact, it will cost less. Because ludicrous illegal decisions cost money too.
Attorney General Peter Neronha blasted the Coastal Resources Management Council for giving the Quidnessett Country Club a chance to change the rules after it built a seawall at its North Kingstown golf course without permission.
Every week I sign a stack of letters to Rhode Island consumers confirming how we have resolved their issues favorably. Really proud of our consumer team in cases big and small.
