how do you explain to a kid why the volume of a cone is 1/3 of the vol of a cylinder with same base? ofc you can’t use \int_0^1 x^2 dx = 1/3. so, do the maths for simple shapes (square base?) and generalize? the fact 1/3 is indep of shape has to come from first principles anyways

I just cannot believe Denis left us. 25+ years ago, we spent a summer together working on our Master thesis at the laboratoire d'économétrie of École Polytechnique, back then located in the heart of Paris.
I am stunned and saddened to learn about the death of Denis Gromb. A wonderful, warm person, and an excellent economist. He has left us way too early. My sincere condolences to his friends, colleagues at

I hope for the Ukrainians that this Russian army inefficiency will continue and even worsen. My guess is that it will. Russian soldiers have poor morale, no desire to kill or get killed for a war that they do not adhere to.

"l'épargne qui dort" c'est pour beaucoup de politiques un arbre magique avec de l'argent dedans, c'est pratique et cela évite de dire qu'on devra faire des arbitrages et lesquels. les autres arbres magiques étant la BCE, l'argent des riches, etc mais c'est moins consensuel.

Looking at it again i think it’s easier for me to make 6 equal pyramids with the cube. With the center as common tip. The vol of each pyramid is 1/6 of the vol of the cube. It is also the vol of a pyramid with base 1 x 1 square and height 1/2. So constant has to be 1/3

One should not overinterpret EU moves from a UK prospective. This leads to internal contradictions as this thread nicely shows. Instead, if one asks « what is the EU position? » one realizes they’ve been pretty consistent. EU just defends what EU is, it is not attacking the UK.

Pushkin Square, maybe less than 1000 meters from Red Square and the Kremlin, is the cite of a significant protest. These people know the risks of challenging the regime. They’re on the street in-spite of major personal costs.
