This may be why non-native speakers are often viewed to be technical rather than creative: (a) their creativity is underappreciated (b) given the hurdle, it's rational for them to signal ability thru technical accomplishments. This is a distortion + inefficiency. 4/

@ling_sprenger I have often been on the sending and occasionally receiving end of this, and it’s marvelous. I think of it as the incredible luxury of being someone’s student for the day, even if that person is someone you’ve never met or might not ever meet.

It's also a case of misspecified beliefs where one is not accounting for selection. Accounting for selection suggests: (i) many nonnative speakers are prob better economists than one initially thinks, (ii) being a native speaker, my ideas are prob worse than my papers suggest.

I love this result, but alas, I lose intuition in notation, particularly if expectations are involved. Thankfully, for people like me, Rubinstein and Wolinsky wrote a BEAUTIFUL paper in JET, explaining the logic of it so very clearly.

Great pleasure and honor to speak to my father’s professional family, and share in this celebration with them. I’m not a natural public speaker, but I did my best to channel some of his insights and humor here.

When my kids were really young, I enjoyed teaching math TO them. But very quickly, I enjoyed learning math and science WITH / FROM them. Here is a cool fact that I learned with / from my elder daughter: if p is prime & q is a positive integer, q^p-q is divisible by p. 1/9

This is where I learned how to drive. First time I stopped at a red light, my instructor turned to me and asked, “What are you doing?? Go go go!” Good times.

Upon further reflection, I see how this ⁦ @xkcd ⁩ comic captures so much of economics so well.

Ideas, like trees, can find roots in unexpected places. We should all be open to it. Also, while there is much darkness in today’s world, there is also so much beauty and light.

The above is work that uses game theory to think about the world. One, of course, wants to also think about game theory and whether one buys it. Some useful reads here: Rubinstein: Brandenburger: 4/6
