My new study just came out in @Nature! The paper introduces "Option C Thinking". This approach is an experimental enhancement that produces the type of policy-based evidence that the science of scaling demands from the beginning. You can download for free here: Huge thanks to the supremely talented editor, @meharpist Without her astute guidance and wisdom this study would have remained in my imagination.

Our next Chicago School in Experimental Economics summer programs are coming! One will take place at the University of Bonn on September 7-11, and the other will take place at the University of Chicago on September 13-17. The summer school is an intensive one-week course based on my forthcoming textbook The goal of the summer school is to deepen scholars’ understanding and knowledge of frontier experimental methods. For more information, and to apply, please go here: @Henkel_Lu is my wonderful co-organizer!

On a call this morning about DEI, a hot topic recently! The group wondered about the science around current equal employment opportunity (EEO) regulations. I noted that one aspect we need to be aware of is the policy backfiring. This is exactly what happened in our recent natural field experiment: If one goal of EEO regulations is to enhance the pool of minority applicants, our study suggests that it is not working.

I just finished a panel to answer the following question: what can we do from the beginning to ensure that our ideas will scale? This, of course, is a crucial consideration for any organization. I argued that we need to flip the traditional research model to an approach that, from the beginning, produces the type of policy-based evidence that the science of scaling demands. To do so, I propose augmenting efficacy trials by using "Option C Thinking." For those interested in this idea, please see here:

Just on a call with some folks from @AAPD. They were concerned about future govt. funding and discrimination in markets. I told them that I can help with the latter, and discussed our study: Beyond showing evidence of discrimination across alot of markets, a key takeaway is that when the discriminator believes the object of discrimination is controllable, any observed discrimination is motivated by animus. When the object of discrimination is not due to choice, the evidence suggests that statistical discrimination is the underlying reason for the disparate behavior.

The @nberpubs just published our new study that explores different channels of discrimination in the @MLB draft. Our analysis reveals that customer preferences significantly influence the drafting of players at the top end of the draft—those likely to gain immediate public attention and eventually play for the club. Conversely, we observe managerial homophily in the latter parts of the draft, where players who attract little attention and have minimal chances of playing for the club are selected. Such preferential bias at both ends of the draft affects team competitiveness.

Maybe I am but let me give it another try. I have worked at jobs that span the gamut: dishwasher, cheesepacker, detasseling corn, tobacco picker, forklift driver, trucker, government servant, professor, chief economist at uber, lyft, and now Walmart. Bosses can be friends, workplaces can be families. I have seen it in every job I ever held. I know that it exists.

On an interview, I was just asked what is one identifying trait of changemakers....this is like asking which child is your favorite. In any event, I stuck with this one.

Just on a call with a group of non-profits who aim to help K-12 students in need of academic and socio-emotional support. A key discussion feature was around scalable programs. I argued that one promising area is to deliver online tutoring by college volunteers. My thinking was guided by our recent pilot test: In my eyes, our approach aligns well with the scaling principles in The Voltage Effect. What are some other scalable approaches out there that we should consider?
