Had a really difficult palliative visit today…but ‘pulled myself together’ and got on with it! I then got in my car and burst out crying. Why do we see crying in visits as a weakness? Surely its a sign of empathy & understanding of the desperate situation these patients are in?

Had a challenging visit yesterday to a retired GP who thought it was “disgusting” a nurse had been sent out to assess them…I woke up this morning to a message from a current GP checking in on me and supporting me 🫶🏼 All we all need is respect ✌🏼

I don’t think it’s a case of ‘would do’ more ‘could do’. Community nurses go above & beyond for all their patients…but particularly palliative patients. However, there are unfortunately barriers for care & services in every area. Limited to what can be provided in the community.

Turned up to visit a care home resident…son had called for an ambulance prior to my arrival as his mum was so poorly…had to tell him she was dying. Not sure it ever gets easier. She’s 93, son was 70 and in tears. Doesn’t matter how old u r - your mum is your mum. ❤️

A full weekend of visits today, whilst our new Band 6 Abbie got to grips with weekend triage…and I loved it! Everything from insulins and wound care to palliative support. Amazing to be doing the visits rather than co-ordinating it all! Community nursing is the best! 💕 👩🏽⚕️

Spent my first week shadowing some amazing ANP’s! The level of skill shown was outstanding! I’ve watched an ANP throughly assessing a patient, prescribing and referring…before then offering to shower her so she could wash her hair for the first time in a week! Nurses rock! 👩🏽⚕️

APACS completed ✔️ Slight blip and had to resit my cardiac exam a week later 🤦🏼♀️ However, giving myself a pat on the back as I am completing my v300 at the same time! APACS a course well worth doing - learnt loads!…but it did nearly give me a mental breakdown!! 🤯

I left my last job 11 months ago…in that time I have had a pay rise, started my APACS course, secured funding to start my v300 NMP in January, received great feedback, have a Xmas meal (paid for!) planned, asked what vouchers I would like for Xmas…GP world ain’t all that bad!😂

I waited with him and his wife for the ambulance to arrive then left them in the capable hands of the paramedics. The patient thanked me for my time and for listening to him. Just a gentle reminder that actually some of the most important skills in nursing CAN’T be taught!

I learnt more in my first year in the community than I did in 8 years working on an orthopaedic ward! This is exactly why NQN should join Community Nursing Teams ⬇️
So sad to hear that student nurses are still be told in the acute sector that to work in the community is to deskill. This proves otherwise. It’s not de-skilling it’s re-skilling. Let’s bust that myth.

When visiting elderly patients in their homes they will often call me Dr. I ALWAYS correct them because A) I am not a Dr! B) Dr’s work very had to gain that title!…But most importantly C) Because nurses r awesome and why they hell would I want to be anything else!

Had a new GP Registrar out with me on visits today…he’s from Burma and was telling me all about the cuisine. He asked me what he needed to try over here…my first and only suggestion was Beans on Toast!! 😂He’s in for a great meal tonight!! 🤷🏼♀️

No model…but starting with hospitals setting patient’s expectations would be a good start! Lack of teaching for patients to administer any injection is seen way too often! We understand time is limited…but once that expectation is set it’s hard to convince patients otherwise 😊

Walked into the PCN managers office on Friday and requested a 5% pay rise in line with the rest of the NHS! Walked out and told them not to come and find me unless it was to tell me they were awarding the pay rise! 🤷🏼♀️ Let u know how that goes….😂

Are there services out there who sit and wait with patients whilst they wait for ambulances to arrive? I feel uneasy leaving patients who r unwell and will always try+arrange for relatives to come over but this isn’t always possible which leaves clinicians in a predicament 🚑

Usually spend international nurses day surrounded by wonderful nurses. Today I spent it with a paramedic…we constantly banter about each others professions but I wouldn’t have it any other way! A casual reminder that nurses are amazing…but we couldn’t be as amazing…

Paid £180 for a mechanic to fix my car and stop it squeaking when I turn right…got in my car…it’s still squeaking!!!! It’s sent me over the edge so I’m buying a new car! No other option! 💁🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️ 🚗 Unfortunately I can now only attend visits that require me turning left!!!

Nursing deems you “successful” when u climb ladders, add letters, & go back to school. Those things mean NOTHING if they still leave u unhappy, lacking joy, & unfulfilled. Success isn’t defined by titles, degrees, & letters. It’s defined by PEACE in your life & JOY in your heart.
