It was an amazing opportunity to be a part of this congressional briefing. Hopefully this event and others like it will increase awareness of the need for access and funding for DBS in psychiatry.
Excellent new work by fellow undergrad

Check out my flash talk tomorrow during the Trainee Highlight Awards session (11:15-12:45 EST) at the BRAIN Initiative meeting! I’ll be at my virtual poster beforehand (
#821
). Full agenda here:
Check out our new preprint on a new method for neurostimulation artifact removal: PARRM. PARRM is fast, lightweight, effective, and even works for low sampling rate recordings!
4/11: From home, the participants used custom tablet and phone applications to collect
#brain
recordings and log
#OCD
symptoms. We captured over 1,000 hours of brain signals linked to variable OCD symptom levels, including during exposure and response prevention (
#ERP
) therapy.
The 2022 Neuroscience Virtual Event, with a 1-day agenda organized by the NIH BRAIN Initiative team and planning committee members, opens March 10th!

#LRneuro
Neuroengineering and neuroscientist trainees looking for opportunities to do amazing work in humans…
@BShofty
is the best of the best! This is an amazing opportunity!!!
6/11: Delta-band power in particular showed a strong negative correlation with OCD symptom intensity in both the left (R = -0.593) and right (R = -0.557) VC/VS. More investigation will be required to determine the consistency of this relationship across individuals.
2/11: Participants were implanted in the ventral capsule/ventral striatum (VC/VS) region with devices capable of both recording signals and delivering electrical
#stimulation
to the
#brain
to treat
#OCD
. Brain recordings were then time synchronized with OCD-relevant behaviors.
Congratulations
@nithya_ram89
on the SOBP award! Important work on characterizing network connectivity (via MEG) before and after DBS in patients with OCD.
Thanks
#SOBP2021
for the opportunity to present my research findings. Had a very nice virtual Mentor, Mentee Reception yesterday at gathertown and very impressed by all the work in
#Neuromodulation
in Psychiatry this year.
10/11: We are grateful to have the opportunity to work with committed, smart, and fun individuals who so freely gave their time and efforts as research participants in this study.
3/11: In the clinic, we used computer vision techniques on video of the face to estimate moment to moment changes in emotional state, time-locked with intracranial and extracranial neural recordings.
CONGRATULATIONS TO THE NEWLY MINTED DR.
@NicoleProvenza
on a FANTASTIC defense!! Can’t wait to see all the brilliant things you’ll continue to do! (Now pls excuse me while I sob at the thought of you leaving)
7/11: In the future, identification of robust neural
#biomarkers
could enable adaptive
#DBS
systems that are able to automatically adjust stimulation parameters in response to symptom fluctuations.
1/11: We describe a platform capable of recording electrical activity from the brain both in the clinic and at home in human participants with severe
#OCD
. Our work demonstrates the utility of naturalistic brain recordings for brain biomarker discovery in psychiatric disorders.
5/11: These data were used to quantify relationships between brain activity and symptoms of
#OCD
. We analyzed neural data during a three-day continuous recording session, during which OCD symptom intensity ranged from zero to eight.
New podcast with
@LoupVentures
: how to move psychiatric brain stim to the next level by thinking more about networks and how we nudge them into new operating modes. Thanks for a fun interview!
@ChapleauMarian1
I share this fear! This seems to be a contributor to the leaky pipeline. Academic institutions should increase support for mothers (onsite daycare, supplemental funding for grants to hire technicians when a PI or postdoc takes family leave, etc).
Excited to share our work examining the role of amygdala oscillations in tracking aversive experiences and how modulation using closed loop DBS can improve PTSD symptoms! Hoping that findings can play a role in meaningfully improving pt outcomes!
