If you deny Lucas’ contributions to TCW 2008, you’re not just calling Filoni a liar. You’re calling Henry Gilroy, Catherine Winder, Steve Sansweet, Tartakovsky, Hidalgo, the main cast, and ofc Lucas himself unreliable.
So George Lucas says it flat out, that the events of the Tartakovsky Clone wars series leads right up into Revenge of the Sith.
Proof that Filoni didn't just screw everything up, he also lied his ass off for years.
George Lucas:
-The Jedi’s policy on attachment is correct
-The prophecy is true
-Balance in the Force is when the Sith are gone
-Midichlorians are an accurate predictor of Force potential
-Jedi need to fight sometimes
Myth: “George Lucas was surrounded by yes-men!”
Fact: Any disagreements between Lucas and his employees were settled via arm wrestle. He simply overpowered them in each instance.
It seems like a lot of these Andor fan types just want to sterilize the series from any personality and humour that distinguished it in the first place just to produce cookie-cutter dystopian sci-fi.
A lot of people replying to this don’t remember what it was like to be 10 years old. They can’t wrap their head around SW being more mature than SpongeBob but less mature than Breaking Bad. Preteens can handle a lot worse than senate hearings and 15 seconds of flesh burning.
George Lucas says the negative response to the Prequel Trilogy came from critics & fans who had been 10 years old when they saw the first films & now didn’t want to watch a children’s movie.
“It is a kids’ movie. It’s always been a kids’ movie”
I'm just gonna say it. The sequels are actually better than the prequels by such a large margin that it's hilarious that people debate on Twitter about it. I love it all but no.
However, I understand people need to make money.
Have fun debating
Cosmonaut: I should never see Yoda use a lightsaber! A true Jedi projects himself with Force magic and dies so other people can clean up his mess!
Lucas: Stick up for yourself, son.
My favourite Star Wars Special Edition change was when Empire gave Episode II a perfect 5-star review in 2002 but later shaved of a couple stars to conform to the tenor of the internet.
In 2002, Empire's Chris Hewitt notoriously gave
#StarWars
: Episode II – Attack Of The Clones a ★★★★★ review – a write-up he's long regretted. Scrubbed from existence for years, here it is 17 years later as originally published:
“Sorry, sweetie, but George didn’t plan anything for the OT just like the ST. He didn’t know Vader was Luke’s father until 8 seconds before filming the scene!”
Who cares? Look at the results
That's been George Lucas' whole thing with Star Wars from the beginning to make it seem casual. He wants it to feel like you are thrown into a real universe without pausing to gush over screensaver bait.

working away making extremely detailed city scapes so george could shoot 15 pages of dialogue in medium shot, reverse shot with two characters on a sofa
It’s kind of hilarious that Anakin is often criticized and called a gullible idiot for buying into Palpatine’s unbelievable fable about cheating death, yet J.J. Abrams and legions of fans use this apparently obvious lie as a crux for Palpatine’s return in TROS.
“Your genes are your destiny.”
-George Lucas
Good for Lucas getting out of the business when he did. His views would have gotten him eaten alive by fans in the current landscape.
Rey identifies as a Skywalker. The Skywalkers taught her that her blood does not define her. She has the spirit of a Skywalker, both figuratively (her spirit, her heart) and literally (Ben Solo’s Life Force).
Insisting that she’s “Rey Palpatine” or “Just Rey” is transphobic.
Johnson: “I can give my take on it but it doesn’t, I guess … now that the movie [TLJ] is out there, it belongs to you guys.”
Lucas: “People will say, ‘When you release it, it belongs to the public.’ No, it's mine. I'm leasing it to
you, $10 at a time. It still belongs to me.”

No he didn’t, he said the film. Was about 90% what he wanted it to be and at SW celebration for its 20th anniversary he said it’s one of his favourites. The whole “I may have gone too far in a few places” is an out of context reaction to a rough cut of the film.
@jtimsuggs
It's not. George Lucas said that third act was a disaster. Jar Jar fighting droids is a comedy stuff while the duel between Qui Jon and Maul is dramatic. It's a big mistake
Nobody ever seems to mention that around the time he was supposedly surrounded by “yes men” Lucas was told by Fox that TPM would destroy the franchise. But just as he did in the 70s when everyone kept telling him he was crazy, he ignored them and followed his instincts.
@StarWarsThrift
She did not *JUST* edit star wars
She saved that movie.
She cut the original trailer that was shopped around to production companies.
She told George "no" when he had a stupid idea. We all saw what happened when nobody shoots down his stupid ideas in 1/2/3.
Even though this idealized image of the Jedi leads to Anakin’s downfall, TLJ actually encourages this unrealistic view of their abilities by having Luke pretend to fight off the entire First Order with a laser sword to supposedly inspire the next generation. What could go wrong?
Anakin has an unrealistic view of the Jedi as invincible warriors who have the power to right any wrong. This goes into why he thinks he should be all-powerful and even be able to stop people from dying.
Thank you for taking this bold stance against artists' rights to preserve their work the way they envisioned. Now is exactly the time for people to hear this.
No Lucas did not alter his outline for the ST to accommodate the EU. Lucas is talking about a video game here circa 2011. Lucas’s ST would have featured Maul; not his descendant. It would have started a few years after ROTJ.
So George Lucas altered his Sequel trilogy script, because it contradicted the EU. Odd thing to do if he never cared about the EU...
Several dumb narratives destroyed right there.
Love how quickly these people are turning on Lucas. Treating him as if he’s another fan on Twitter they’d usually dunk on for giving candid criticisms of the new movies.
GL: *Points out the obvious fact that a series referred to as a “saga” would feature the progeny of its main characters in the next trilogy and that EVEN the books saw this coming.*
Fans: “So, the movies were gonna be based off the books!”
@AdamLanceGarcia
Part of the problem is Luke was already inspired by the previous generation of Jedi which failed him. Now we just sit through the whole cycle again cause we can’t have happy endings anymore ostensibly.
@jtimsuggs
I don’t know if you’re aware of this, Jacob, but “Star Wars Fans” are not one single entity that can have conflicting opinions 25 years apart.
I know SW themes have always been flexible (e.g., Ben's theme and the Force's), but ever since the theatre I thought it was a little weird that the music that plays when Anakin hears his mother is dead pops up seven movies later in a scene with Poe and Zorii Bliss of all things.
“Trying to prevent a dark future then inadvertently causing it is right out of Macbeth”
Why couldn’t the prequels have done something so brilliant and lived up to TLJ’s “Shakespearean” way of writing?
When someone says it’s wrong for a filmmaker to update the effects of their old movies because it’s a product of the technology at the time, they’re taking the opposite stance Lucas does in this quote which he gets accused of forgetting the sentiment of later in his career.
I like that Maul, Dooku, and Grievous are all dispensable tools that Sidious can callously replace. The real villains are in plain sight the whole trilogy.
Dooku being introduced an hour and the half in instead of being in phantom menace is a pretty good example of Lucas just making this shit up as he went along
Maul, Dooku and Grievous should have all just been the same secondary antagonist throughout the trilogy tbh
The prequel trilogy era was mostly rainbows for kids growing up in this time because most of us just missed the Screenager era and enjoyed the films and The Clone Wars episodes on our own. We weren’t self-conscious about the health of the “fan base” according to Internet forums.
@Chad_Br00ks
@KhamlichiMorad
Sequel trilogy haters have this ironic romanticized version of the prequel trilogy era like it was all rainbows. In reality George got dragged mercilessly by an ungrateful fanbase. Then they wonder why he sold the franchise to get away from edgelords
@DenofGeekTV
Victoria Bennet claims that 80% of A New Hope was written by Gloria Katz and Willard Huyck in Vice’s Icons: Unearthed series about Star Wars?
Neat scene. Smart, simple, ironic resolution that plays off of the already existing twist of the decoy. Also, the Naboo obtaining the hidden blasters and thus gaining the upper hand because they know their home better than its invaders is a nice touch.
It pains my soul that people watch the prequels and think Anakin's even remotely as well written of a character as Paul. Like guys... we're talking about the prequels here
If you think Obi-Wan teasing Anakin for something he never did and Anakin petulantly defending himself is unnatural dialogue, your father was doing something wrong in your teen years.
People on this site don't care about whether a movie is good or not. As long as you’re disagreeing with people you don’t like, you’re on the right side. It’s all out of spite not genuine care for film criticism.
I like how in TFA they make sure to let you know Han finding Rey isn't luck so they come up with the explanation that he and Chewie can apparently scan the whole galaxy faster than the First Order and when Qui-Gon meets Anakin in TPM they're just like, "yeah, it was fate."
I don’t believe this BS for a second. The second half is something he DID say but in an interview 5 years earlier. Not only is it out of character for him to lambast fans at a fan event, but we know the decision to have Disney make his sequels was to spend time with his family.
Hayden used to get hate for Anakin's brief little "AH!" compared to Luke's raw howl after he lost his hand in TESB, but I think it sounds vaguely similar to when Anakin/Vader loses his hand again in ROTJ.
Carrie Fisher expressed regret about her inconsistent British accent but it ends up making sense that she takes on a more posh tone when speaking to Imperial authorities. The prequels make this even better by having Padmé slip into the accent when doing her duties as queen.
"Anakin's motivation to become a master is better in the novelization because he wants the power to save Padmé."
Okay, isn't this all in the movies?
Anakin when talking about the power to stop people from dying: "It's all Obi-Wan's fault. He's jealous! He's holding me back!"
I wonder why Lucas is comfortable talking about the development of Ahsoka himself but tells interviewers that Filoni is the one who is the “expert” on Ventress.
“George, why are you shooting a shot for Episode III so far in advance while doing Episode II?”
“So I don’t have to come all the way back to Tunisia.”
“What happens if you decide you want another shot?”
“Then I go get it.”
@jtimsuggs
Just because the current star wars is dog crap, doesn't make the Prequel Trilogy good. Having the main characters SPLIT UP and go in 4 SEPARATE DIRECTIONS is novice screen writing, at best.
This is where the fun begins. Empire celebrates 25 years of the

I love how these fans are trying to retcon Lucas's history with his product. The ones who blast Disney and believe getting Lucas back will MAKE STAR WARS GREAT AGAIN are the same who blasted Lucas for the prequels as RUINING OUR CHILDHOOD.
@_Deathtrooper__
I always heard Lucas was so obsessive about recutting the special editions so he could constitute enough “new footage” to recredit it as per guild standards and keep her from obtaining royalties going forward.
@lite_thespark
I think they should convince George to come back and produce new final special editions for the whole Saga, even let him have a stab at adding elements into the sequels. The OT could use a nice polish of the CGI elements specially considering what they can do with miniatures now
@OliverJia1014
“No one is going to defend Jedi Rocks.”
Sorry, but the original genuinely looks like something out of The Muppets and most people are only favourable to it because it came first.
Didn’t hear any criticism about the logic of Luke using the Force to project himself as younger because that’s how he wants Kylo to see him. But when Anakin, who has returned from the netherworld of the Force, projects himself the way he wants Luke to see him, it makes no sense?
I’ve actually seen people say the apology in the second image somehow undoes his comments in the first.
What do you think more accurately reflects Lucas’ feelings? An hour-long, one-on-one interview with a friend he’s known for years or an issued statement after controversy?
The OT & PT being about a special family of heroes who have a happy ending isn’t a “reactionary interpretation”. It’s just what the movies are. The problem is when you guys see a mythological fairy tale and can’t help but twist it into a dreary commentary on fandom or something.
Apparently there are people who believe Lucas was entirely against the creation of Ahsoka for The Clone Wars, so here’s a good one for your arsenal when these people need a reality check.
You can dislike these ideas or criticize their portrayal in the movies and then just walk away. But you can’t go around spouting that everyone who understands the intended message is “missing the point” and that the movies now need to bend backwards to fit your own worldview.
George Lucas:
-The Jedi’s policy on attachment is correct
-The prophecy is true
-Balance in the Force is when the Sith are gone
-Midichlorians are an accurate predictor of Force potential
-Jedi need to fight sometimes
What world are these always-online people living in? Crystal Skull was one of the best reviewed movies of 2008. You think anyone who likes these movies now are just trying to spite you and your 15-year-old forum posts with thirty upvotes?
"Hey, remember that terrible sequel that put the franchise on ice for a decade? It ain't so bad!"
- Fans whenever a newer, even worse movie in their favorite series comes out
Anakin absolutely believes the Jedi are after control. That’s what Palpatine begins to convince him of during the opera scene. Like Lucas says here, it is very much on his mind during the scene of Mace being killed.
@aidenpryde
No, he knows the Jedi don't want control and that is not even on his mind.
Palpatine is not the senate and him gone would not change that. Taking him down is not tearing it down.
“I see you becoming the greatest of all the Jedi, Anakin. Even more powerful than Master Yoda.”
“I will be the most powerful Jedi EVER.”
“I have become more powerful than any Jedi. Even you [Yoda].”
It seems almost everyone who claims to like this movie or the sequel trilogy as a whole has some sort of agenda to “own the dudebros” or some external politicized reason. It’s all out of spite toward other fans, nothing to do with the movies themselves.
[Art historians 200 years from now watching The Last Jedi]
"So what does this film tell us about people living in the early decades of the 21st century?"
"Uh, something about nerds sniping at each other."
I didn’t get the impression that Yoda’s decision to cover up their discovery on the origins of the clones was the sort of thing he did regularly but more a consequence of being caught in Sidious’s web just as he laments in the episode.
I LOVE that Leslye is totally in control of her story. "It's my show" 👏 and yes, Yoda is capable of keeping things he knows about the Sith a secret until the end of Phantom Menace. Link to article below 👇
There seems to be a kuleshov-like phenomenon where people watch Hayden in the prequels and hate his performance, but then watch Hayden doing the same performance 20 years later after seeing TCW and suddenly think he’s a better actor under Filoni’s direction.

Modern Live-Action Anakin=Clone Wars Anakin>>>>>Prequel Anakin
I’m so happy that we finally got to see how amazing of an actor Hayden Christensen is.
The environment is cool, but this scene kind of sums up what is off to me about this movie. We go from all this talk about how we need to do away with tradition and build a new order just to go back to the “good ol’ days” of the Falcon shooting Ties while classic ‘77 music plays.
I love the moment when Chewie flies the Millennium Falcon on Crait to help The Resistance in The Last Jedi.
It’s quick, but so much fun. Especially love when you see Rey destroy three TIE Fighters in one blast.
One thing the ST makes me appreciate about the PT is its sparing use of familiar themes. For episodes I and II off the top of my head, the Binary Sunset theme only really appears in important moments for Anakin and faintly in scenes involving the Force.
@Brandon_Bird
Giving Luke the nickname "Wormy," for one
But seriously, the original rough draft is widely available (they even made it into a comic book a while back) and I assure you the key word is "rough"
The anti film critique crowd (half of the ST fan base) cannot engage with any nuance in good faith. You can’t give feedback on a character that looks more appropriate for a Disneyland attraction without a bunch of weasels trying to reduce the argument to “Star Wars puppets bad”.
“You’re doing a fine job directing and all, but aren’t you guys even going to reference Han’s time shipping boner-pills made from alien giraffe meat across the galaxy?”
Mace’s death is the WTF moment where Anakin realizes he’s crossed a line and the viewer realizes there is about to be a massive shift in the tide of the series. Revealing that he survived would cheapen all of this.
I actually find it satisfying that we segue from Padmé describing her childhood to Anakin indirectly alluding to his own childhood to Anakin making a physical advancement all in like two lines.
