@danielleboccell is this just a question of what you/they mean by "understand"? sure we know some things, but take any mechanistic interpetability paper and they'll work very hard to explain a narrow behavior in a model much smaller than GPT-4

GPT-4 has made me ~10x more productive at the fun parts of coding (rapid prototyping, using a new language/framework) but has barely helped the hard parts (debugging, dependency hell), with the result that instead of making things feel easier, life is now "just the hard parts"

@danielleboccell fair enough re: magic. We have scaling laws, but what behaviors will emerge as we push down the loss is guesswork, and I think being able to make predictions is an important part of understanding (and very few people predicted LLMs in advance)
