I would be more than happy to sit down with anyone; journalist, policy wonk, random passers by in the street to explain, in excruciating detail, why right to buy for HAs is an incredibly bad idea.
LONG THREAD ALERT:
Morning, I've read the Regulation of Social Housing report from the Levelling Up, Housing and Communities Committee so you don't have to (though you probably should). Here's the key takeaways 1/
Housing folks. Plumbers have discovered, as suspected, that the condensate pipe from my boiler was never connected to on out pipe. This was a new build, moved in October 2017. Passed defects, but what avenues do I have compensation wise from the developer?
Your regular reminder that 'cutting red tape' on its own will not increase the volume of housing being built (it's more complicated than that). But may well impact on quality.

Trust me when I say this. Being able to say goodbye to a loved one is a fundamental part of the grieving process. So many will have been robbed of that, of a basic element of what it is to process the trauma of loss. That's where this anger is coming from.
Lots of pretty words. But the wrecking amendments put forward by the likes of Villiers, and supported by Seely, will mean your kids will have fewer options in the housing market. They're not local patriots, they're wealth hoarders and growth saboteurs.
If I had a pound for every time someone questioned the decision of me and my wife not to have kids. I'd take those pounds and throw it at those judgemental assholes. Your life isn't ours. Kindly respect that.
We're housing charities. We shouldn't have to be taken on, or to be shamed to do the basics. No one should have to battle us. We should just do the repairs and keep the stock in habitable condition. This isn't hard

is a small world, occasionally I get stopped by folks who knew mum, see my surname & connect the dots. I love the little anecdotes people share. The warmth with which they talk about her. She spent her life working in housing. It's priceless to know the impact she had.
For the umpteenth time. Right to Buy is brilliant for tenants, but rubbish national policy. Those units sold are never replaced in adequate numbers. We need more social housing, not less.
1) this already exists
2) it largely failed
3) Govt will have to find a way to fund the difference between market value & discount price - treasury not likely to stump up cash
4) RTB is the single largest driver of the net loss of social housing stock. We need more, not less.
NEW on
@Telegraph
… Boris Johnson wants a new ‘right to buy’ for people renting from housing associations.
A repeat of Maggie’s famous policy… 2.5m households could benefit… officials tasked to work up… PM pushing hard… could be boost for Red Wall.
Nine years since the old dear passed. Doesn't matter your age. Some times you just need a hug from your mum and a cuppa. This picture always makes me smile. It's one of the of us all together.
I get when HAs try to claim back the narrative following stories of shocking housing situations. But in all honesty a simple apology and attempts to quickly rectify the situation is a whole lot more effective than stating how much money you've spent replacing kitchens.

Housing is a public health issue. Housing is a public health issue. Housing is a public health issue. Housing is a public health issue. Housing is a public health issue. Housing is a public health issue. Housing is a public health issue. Housing is a public health issue.
Is it time to reunite health and housing?
“There is clear evidence that the highest death rates from covid-19 are in areas with the most poverty, higher levels of overcrowding, prevalence of HMOs, and greatest demand for social housing.”
#ukhousing
Dunno who needs to hear this, but if you go out to recruit and unsuccessful candidates ask for feedback - give it to them. It is deeply disrespectful to do otherwise.
And this kids is why anyone with even a passing interest and/or background in housing are horrified at Right to Buy. One of the worst
#ukhousing
policies ever brought forward.
These numbers are grim. I have zero desire, or frankly energy, to go into another national lockdown. But the complete failure to get our track and trace system to where it needs to be means we have little alternative. This is going to be a rough winter.
Can someone show me why we shouldn't be building more
#socialhousing
? Because after studying and/or working in
#ukhousing
for over a decade I haven't found one yet. And if there aren't any, why are we so determined not to build the number of social rent homes we need?
Dunno whether it's the tattoos, the muscles, the Staffy or a combination of all 3. But the judgemental looks in this village do bore after a while. Unclench your anus madam, I'm not going to besmirch your good name. Or violate your goodself. I'm walking my dog.
I'm as guilty as the next person on this. But Twitter lately feels like a lot of folks are simply screaming into the void. So here's my Staffy looking like she's a doorman/woman.

In fairness if my taxes help rectify this by paying for some lawyers to stop innocent people getting deported. I'm OK with that.
Getting more state school students into Oxbridge won't damage its quality. It simply means more state school kids will be go to those unis. One can only assume these newspapers are worried because some of their readers spend considerable sums sending their kids to public schools.
At some point I'm going to need to pull together a borderline coherent piece on why HAs keep failing on repairs. But at a high level it feels like a combination of:
Processes
Stock condition/age
Covid backlog
Post merger issues
IT systems
Data management/use
Competence
Culture
Just a day!? Christ alive. I'm at the age where I need 3 days, an intravenous drip, a nurse on stand by and enough carbs to keep a small village going for half a year.

Either you want more housing built, or you want more homeless households to remain in poor quality temporary accommodation, more individuals and families to live in a private rented sector that doesn't work for too many, and for home ownership to be unaffordable for your kids.
@JamesDAustin
It's collective punishment for individual failings. Monumental overreach which of course won't be matched by changes for other risk demographics, such as a requirement for retesting for those over 70.
One of things that me & Georgi often get told is that we're good with kids. So why not have our own? I'm good with Excel, that doesn't mean I want to take the damn thing home with me. I'm heartbroken for those unable to have children. But it's not for us. End of. Respect that.
Been saying this for years. Right to buy is great for the person buying. Terrible for everyone else

UK Housing Review: Right to Buy branded a ‘strategic failure’
I went 4yrs before having a permanent job. At one point I moved house once every 6months. My wife has been made redundant 3times. I've had the 'pleasure' of in-work poverty. Don't patronise about needing to save better. Our housing market is broken.
No bills to worry about, no stress on losing our home. Universal access, be you a pauper or prince. It's not perfect, but it's a million miles better than the alternative. It's what a civilised nation should provide its citizens. And I will defend it to the last
#NHSNotForSale
It shouldn't need quality investigative journalism or a regulatory revamp for
#ukhousing
to get its shit together. Doing repairs, investing in our stock and communities are literally our core functions. Where is the accountability? Where is the leadership on this?
Although I wasn't always grateful at the time, speech therapy was invaluable for me. Treatment/support shouldn't be a lottery. But given a decade of austerity and cuts, regardless of the type of service, it often is.
This chap has done more in the last year or so to improve the sector than many professionals (myself included) have done in their whole working lives. Fundamentally all of this born out of our own failures & Kwajo's desire to put things right. We must do better

🚨 This Morning I met with the Secretary of State for Housing - Michael Gove to discuss Housing and how lives are being put at risk.
After both agreeing things need to change, I will be going back to meet him and his team again to propose and work on how to fix this 🙏🏽
New Housing Minister Policy Starter Pack:
Ignore renters.
Claim we can build enough houses on brownfield land: ignore evidence to contrary.
Claim will help those affected by cladding scandal: Don't.
Look at Planning reform: Roll back following lobbying from colleagues.
PERSONAL NEWS: Following a period of reflection, and in light of the growing MP 2nd jobs scandal, I've decided to step down from my own 2nd role of being a 'total legend'. This will enable me to fully concentrate on my primary job. I won't be taking any questions at this time.
Thoughts:
1) Build more
#SocialHousing
2) Home ownership obsessed
#ukhousing
policy will fail (see past 3 decades)
3)
#Housing
is both a want & a need. Market will only ever provide the former. Govt must do so for the latter
4) One's housing tenure does not define their worth
All PRS landlords should be registered on a national database. All who wish to let a property should be required to publish stock condition and rent cost data on that database. All HHSRS issues, FRA actions, Gas, water, & electric checks for your rental should be visible to you.

Incredible to see so many people across the country fighting to end the building safety crisis. Great website here where you can see all of the different protests from around the country 👉
