Leading UK charity supporting male victims of domestic abuse and others that help them too. A voice for 3m men who are or have been victims. Estd 2001.
Our helpline supporting male victims of domestic abuse relies in donations from the public - if you are able to help, you can do so here including sponsoring our fundraisers:
Thank you
@jamelia
for raising the issues of false accusations and the damaging impact controlling behaviour and discrediting someone's character has as a form of abuse. We receive lots of calls from men which fit this.

This
@TheSun
front page is hugely damaging to ALL victims of domestic abuse, male and female. It is never 'minor' and non-contact conditions are nearly always applied and need to be - to protect victims. Reading this will put thousands off from seeking help. Do they not think?
We would like to pay tribute to Richard for sharing his experiences of being a male victim of domestic abuse. It will encourage men going through this to reach out and it will also help society better understand too. Thank you Richard.

Our thoughts today are with those wonderful fathers who are suffering from domestic abuse, have had their children deliberately alienated against them and with those who have lost their fathers because of domestic abuse.
#FathersDay
Male victims of domestic abuse are not taken seriously by judiciary. Strangled, bitten, GBH, criminal damage, plastic surgery, metal plates for his face. No prison. Judge said she did 'not view it as being a classic case of domestic abuse.' via
@MailOnline
A horrific example of how false allegations of domestic abuse destroy the lives of men can be seen clearly in this case. 56 days wrongly in jail, being forced to flee and suicide ideation. Our thoughts are with the victim and hope he is getting support.
One of the clearest ever cases of the double standards male victims face. He ends up in prison and loses his job, but his false accuser avoids jail. How can this be right, fair or equal? If the genders were reversed, he rightly would be in jail.
On
#InternationalMensDay
today, if you are a man suffering from domestic abuse please contact us, the police or confide in someone you trust. If you think you know a man who could be in this situation, please reach out to them, listen and help.
We sincerely hope that Jason, Mohammed and Oliver are receiving the support they need. The power and devastation of false accusations (or the threat of) is absolutely clear here. It is an area that needs far more recognition.
This is a very important message that also applies to female perpetrators of domestic abuse and even more so when applied to male victims. It shows how gender stereotypes and cognitive bias can dangerously places victims at a higher risk.
Our thoughts today are with all those fathers who are suffering at home from domestic abuse, or have been deliberately alienated, without foundation, from their children. Please stay strong. There is help for you
#FathersDay
1/2 Working with
@VictimSupport
,
@Shelter
and
@NACRO
, we are funding additional refuge places for male victims and survivors of domestic abuse. If you are man living in London and are being threatened, controlled or intimidated at home, help is available.
We have set aside Weds 2 November to launch Supporting Male Victims of Domestic Abuse Day.
#MenYouAreNotAlone
. We're asking organisations supporting men to publicise the help they have for the men in their local community. Details on how to get involved:
4 women convicted of carrying out domestic abuse against men in Derbyshire in one day. If ever there was evidence that domestic abuse cannot be defined as a gendered crime (an ideological position that minimises male and LGBT+ victims) this feature is it.
We are extremely pleased to see our Honorary Patron Erin Pizzey has been awarded a CBE in the New Year's Honours List for services to victims of domestic abuse. Very well deserved. Pictured with our Chair
@Belvederebrooks
at her 80th birthday a few years ago.
Our thoughts are with Ryan and his family. We are pleased with the jury's decision.
It shows domestic abuse can happen to men of any age and from any background.
It has been a sad week for male victims of domestic abuse (two convictions for murder, RIP Gary Morgan and Bradley Lewis, and a shocking case of 38 years of coercive control). For men going through this, there is help, so please do reach out.
#MenYouAreNotAlone
@ManKindInit
There is help for everyone. If only they would reach out as DV is hidden, some trust and go to

members who are

Our thoughts on
#FathersDay
are with those men who are suffering behind their front door and protecting their children, those who are willfully being denied access to their children for no good reason and those who have seen their children alienated against them
#YouAreNotAlone
Our thoughts today are with those men who have died by suicide because of domestic abuse. Our thoughts are also with those they left behind. Please speak to helplines and those that care for you.

We caught up with Eddie's mum this week and she asked that this could be retweeted as a reminder that domestic abuse happens to men and how it is important that it is taken seriously.
It's "Supporting Male Victims of Domestic Abuse Day" where organisations are promoting support for men in their communities. Do look for
#MenYouAreNotAlone
and repost/tweet any content - it improves the chances men have of seeing there is help. Thank you.
It is wonderful to see the official photograph of our Honorary Patron, Erin Pizzey, with her daughter and granddaughter. Taken after she received her CBE.
She is such a pioneer for victims and survivors of domestic abuse.
A truly deserved honour.
#erinpizzey
@erin_pizzey
Over 50,000 male victims of partner abuse consider taking their own lives every year. Any man who does, is one too many. As a society, we have to do more to listen, believe and help them escape. The responsibility is ours not theirs.

if you are a male victim of domestic abuse, please do not hesitate to call us, speak to someone you trust or contact the police - there is help for you.
By shaming all men for being men and presuming they are all bad actually makes it harder for vulnerable men to seek help. It also gives a continuing excuse to public services to not worry about supporting them - makes them less deserving.

Today is the launch of Supporting Male Victims of Domestic Abuse Day where over 40 organisations across the UK are promoting the support and services they provide in their communities to male victims. To find out more, please see below.
#MenYouAreNotAlone
The utter devastation of false allegations and accusations of domestic abuse against men is laid bare below. We really hope Matt is able to get his life back on track.
We hope that the two falsely accused men are able to move forward. “Her claims do a great disservice to victims of rape and sexual assault who need our help and support. They have had a huge impact on the lives of the two men she had accused."
It is
#InternationalMensDay
today - please remember if you're a male victim of domestic abuse: "You are not to blame" "You are not weak" "You are not alone". There is support through helplines, local domestic abuse services, police and trusted friends / family.
#YouAreNotAlone
Domestic Abuse cannot be defined as a gendered crime in a fully inclusive, diverse and equality-based 21st century society. It simply does not fit. To continue this view marginalises male (including their daughters) and LGBT+ victims (including women in same sex relationships).
We are pleased this terrible crime is recieving national attention. We must not allow those deliberately making false allegations/accusations (or making a threat to do so) against men or women to believe there are no consequences for them or their victims.
Really important message and great to see national coverage featuring the excellent
@paullavellefoun
who do such great work supporting male victims on behalf of their friend.
Huge thank you to Richard for sharing his experience and in encouraging more men to come forward. It is vital as a society we fully recognise men can be and are also victims of domestic abuse. There is support and help available.
#MenYouAreNotAlone
We would like to thank and pay tribute to Phoenix WoMen's Aid in Doncaster for opening a male only refuge this week. They "provide help, support, and advice for women, men and child victims of domestic violence and abuse."
Our Chair
@BelvedereBrooks
at Buckingham Palace today as he collected an OBE for supporting male victims of domestic abuse. All on behalf of our great trustees, staff, volunteers, fundraisers, sponsors, partners, donors, supporters and never forgetting all those we help.
If you have not watched this, it is highly recommended but is harrowing and sad.
The terrible impact both for the men but also for the mothers, sisters and friends. False allegations are a very nasty and pernicious form of domestic abuse.
Disappointed to see coverage and announcement on this very welcome funding to only feature female victims. Why is it so difficult for male and LGBTQ+ victims of domestic abuse not to be equally recognised and not marginalised? They do exist, you know.
Huge thank you to the wonderful organisations and people who took part in Supporting Male Victims of Domestic Abuse Day
#MenYouAreNotAlone
- the key of course is to keep the awareness high all year round! Thank you and feedback welcome.
For the record, we offered weeks ago to give oral evidence to the
#DABill
but were never called. However, 7 female victim charities gave evidence (no criticism of them). So despite the fact that one in three victims are male, their voices were silenced last week.
#Democracy2020
It is not appropriate for the media to describe someone who killed their male partner by stabbing him with a kitchen knife (9cm deep wound) as a "feisty mum" who then fled. She had previously attacked him as well. Only 10 year sentence.
Seriously. We need equal justice for perpetrators based on the crime not gender. What sort of message does this send to male victims of domestic abuse!
"When I fled my abusive wife, I had nowhere to go" - a brilliant article from our trustee, ambassador and survivor about his experience. Please share. via
@MetroUK
Really pleased to see
@ukhomeoffice
including men in their
#YouAreNotAlone
campaign (we asked them to make the colouration on the men's ads to be more male-friendly and they did!). This inclusive and gender-informed approach is the way forward.
If any men require information/ support due to domestic abuse, see our website with information, local support organisations and helplines. Plus please reach out to trusted friends/family. If in danger, please call 999
#mywifemyabuser
#MenYouAreNotAlone
This is a very real and important issue - one that too many do not want to talk about or hear - but our experience chimes with that of
@MensAdvisoryP
. The threat of false allegations to keep men in an abusive relationship is a real problem.
This is a very important campaign so please do support. 11% of male victims of partner abuse think about suicide. Our thoughts today are with those dads, sons, partners, brothers and mates, as well as their sisters, mums, daughters, mates and partners too.
#notjustanother
This is an awful situation where 15 false statements were made, three arrests and significant harm on her disabled ex-husband. We hope he is getting the support he needs. via
@MailOnline
This is fantastic news from
@SaferPlacesUK
and means men in Essex can receive support in a safe place. Naming it after Alex is a fitting tribute and a reminder that men are affected by domestic abuse.
We opened 'Alex House', the 1st refuge for male survivors of

in
#Essex
. Named in memory of Alex O’Donoghue, a victim of abuse who took his own life.

It is brilliant to see the Duchess of Cornwall
@ClarenceHouse
include male victims of domestic abuse - "I wanted to lift the shroud of this silence, and get more women, children and men to talk about their experiences." Real inclusive leadership.
Over 50 women (including many mums) personally affected by a male victim of domestic abuse have signed a letter to MPs to ensure the
#DABill
and Statutory Guidance supports men and does not further marginalise or minimise them. Read here
#StandWithHim
Just heard of a service commissioned by a council to support women and men but for the latter, they use an additional screening tool. Illegal to do so under Equality Act 2010 and no wonder so few men take up local support if met with suspicion.
We have called for the
#domesticabusebill
to include
#parentalalienation
as a clearly defined act of domestic abuse against a parent. Read this article and you can see why it is vital.
Our thoughts are with Dennis. This lenient sentence shows there continues to be a problem with taking male victims seriously in the minds of some judges. This case of violence, coercion and cruelty shows domestic abuse is not a gendered crime.
Arrested 6 times, 81 hours in custody, lost job and suicide ideation - the consequence of false allegations and online impersonation. There are still many who want to minimise the impact of false allegations on men. We hope Mr Jolly can rebuild his life.
This is absolutely brilliant. Thank you to everyone involved
@tweet_tdas
for setting this up and
@TraffordCouncil
for their support. We need more organisations and councils following your lead!

Great to see the realities that male victims of domestic abuse across the UK face. Our helpline mirrors these findings from
@RespectUK
- Progress is being made on support but still too much minimisation and not enough inclusion. We need a step change.
We are fully supporting
#MensHealthWeek
and if we are to take men's health seriously at a political level then we need both a Men's Health Strategy and an Intimate Violence Against Men and Boys Strategy.
Please do watch the documentary on Channel 5 about Richard Spencer's experience. Tonight at 10pm

He was on

this morning with our Chair
@Belvederebrooks
and the clear message is there is help out for you so please do reach out.
#MenYouAreNotAlone
The test that needs to be made is would the sentence be tougher/different if this was a male teaching assistant and a 15 year old girl? We believe there would and rightly so. This is the kind of unequal justice that has to change.

A massive thank you to
@IpswichTown
and
@LUFC
for their support for our Ambassador
@SkeelAlex
and in raising awareness of male victims of domestic abuse. We are confident more men will get help because of it.
This chap was "stopped from showering/defecating at home - she'd punish him by physically assault - prevented him from eating - making him sleep on the floor with no duvet and windows open." He lost 4 stone. We hope he is getting the support he needs.
Our thoughts are with Mr Spencer and we hope he is receiving all the support he needs. This is as clear an example of
#coercivecontrol
against a man that you will ever read.
via
@MailOnline
Very important article on coercive control. Shows not only men are victims of this and that there is help out there - it also highlights how we need cultural change in society and public services as they are still not recognised. Thanks to
@Saferwales
Huge thanks to Gareth for speaking on
@thismorning
and to
@catdeeley
&
@benshephard
for such a sensitive interview. Another vivid example of the domestic abuse that men go through. We are also pleased he called our helpline and we helped him.
#sarahrigby
Thank you to everyone featured on
#whenwomenabusemen
tonight on Channel 5 - we really hope it makes a difference to opening society's eyes and that more men come forward to get help. Will be on Play Again for those who missed it.
It is Supporting Male Victims of Domestic Abuse Day on Wednesday (2 Nov) next week
#MenYouAreNotAlone
where organisations across the UK are highlighting the support they have for male victims. For more information and how you can get involved, see below.
Our thoughts are with Tony and his family.
His daughters said he was a gentle, caring and spiritual man, who always saw the best in everyone. Their dad, Tony Browne, was murdered. His daughters are clear that "Our dad was a victim of domestic abuse".
Very pleased to hear
#ToxicMasculinity
being called out for making vulnerable men and boys even more vulnerable and less likely to see help. The phrase is dangerous and is itself toxic.
With toxic masculinity high on the agenda, are we now viewing boys as potential perpetrators of sexism and violence? Is this fair – and how should we be teaching them?
#OurBoysAsWell
is at 11am.
Another nasty case of false allegations of domestic abuse against a man which is itself domestic abuse.
We hope Paul is receiving the support he needs to get his life back on track.
The insidious and wrong narrative that women cannot harm men and everytime they do, it can only be in self-defence is now the 'go-to'
#darvo
excuse being played out in the courts. Clear example below and thankfully the jury saw though it...this time.
A terribly weak sentence when you view the impact on the two footballers. Clearly this magistrate does not take male victims of
#stalking
seriously. We would expect prison if the genders were reversed. Contact
@live_life_safe
@TalkingStalking
for help.
Our helpline solely relies on the public for funding. We're taking more calls than ever but donations are down. So if you're planning to get fit again/lose weight post-Covid, please remember to include us in any sponsorships for runs, walks, marathons etc.
Additionally - Richard Spencer is officially defined/classified by the Government as being a victim of violence against a woman. Even though he is a man. This today shows how male victims are minimised.
@AlexChalkChelt
@Laura__Farris
#mywifemyabuser
The acceptability of the controlling behaviour is shocking. It's as if this is OK or normal. Plus would it be published this way (non-serious tone) if the genders were reversed? We hope not. Shows how stereotypes still inhibit recognition of male vics.
It is
#InternationalMensDay
today which we fully support and endorse. It highlights a whole range of issues that men face including domestic abuse. If you need support, please use our directory to find help where you live.
#MenYouAreNotAlone
Just received email from a chap veey upset about this
@MattHancock
@DHSCgovuk
statement in the broadcast tonight. "We will look at all options to keep people safe - especially women and children in homes where somebody is abusive." Why are male victims second class?
#donotcount
We have analysed our calls today and we are receiving one third more calls than normal from men and those supporting them over the last two weeks. We are also at capacity.
Bizarre to see a co-ordinated campaign to discredit expert witnesses / fathers as if morals/falsehoods don't matter: Judge said he found the mother “made an entirely false allegation” after alluding to the father having a sexual interest in his daughter.
For many fathers, today will be a sad day as it brings home that they are not able to see their children as their ex has deliberately alienated them against him. This is why we call for
#ParentalAlienation
to be included in the statutory definition of domestic abuse
#FathersDay
Very concerning. We are worried it will increase due in part to Covid and domestic abuse. 11% of male victims of partner abuse have considered taking their own lives as a means of escape. Mums tell us regularly that is what has happened to their sons.
