Great to see a culture of rehabilitation rather than #WastingTime inside. Our #WastingTime campaign wants to see people better prepared for release through work and education in prison. Often, work in prison is inconsistent and only a few hours a week:

The Feltham YOI report shows young people are confined to their cells for 22 hours a day. This, along with high levels of assault and limited education underscore a failing system. Damning YOI reports support provision of more community-based solutions.

Today, the HMI Time to Care report highlights that the rate of self-harm among women in prison is 8.5 times that in the men’s. The report finds that use of force, lack of basic support and isolation is driving self-harm. Read our full comment:

The prison population is up by more than 1,000 since the start of the year. The number of people being sent to prison is rapidly outstripping available space. The Government must implement a more sustainable model involving community-based alternatives.
