Let’s find a better alternative for the former Candlewood Suites on Pecan Park — no shelter! MOVE = Make Our Voices Equal In Austin.

#FixtheProcess
Never give up and never surrender! Here’s a look back on the last year as we enter YEAR 4 of our fight to stop
#Scandalwood
and find a better alternative for all!
Congressman Casar, you might want to call your old office on Tuesday and check in on that hotel conversion scheme you voted for as an Austin Council member. It's apparently not going well.
Happy Labor Day!
UNBELIEVABLE! City says giving neighbors fair, advance notice of plans to convert property into homeless shelters would be “extremely burdensome.”
Maybe find another line of work, then! RT if you agree public servants should … well, serve the pubic.
Mayor Adler not sure what the rapid growth of the homeless camp on Pecan Park Boulevard and vandalism of the empty Candlewood have to do with one another.

#FixtheProcess
Dallas paid $26k/room for 2700 rooms to house their homeless. Meanwhile, CoA wastefully spent taxpayers$ (who struggle to maintain their own houses or pay rent) for $190K/room for ONLY ~50 rooms to house the homeless.
In a few short years, Austin has gone from Live Music Capital of the World to the Abandoned Shopping Cart Capital of Texas.
We along with
@DocumentingATX
delivered 12 banged-up buggies to the Austin Council today as they met today. Here's why we did it:
Arnold bought 25 tiny homes for $250K…😳.
Yet, ATX CC spent $9.5M 2 buy housing for only 50ppl @ Candlewood.
Imagine if CC had invested $500K for 50 homes & used the rest for rehab, services, outreach & most importantly prevention…🤯
Picture of the day. We’re starting to see a similar pattern emerge here at Candlewood: shopping carts & used sofas. Community members behind this fence, are helpless to the lack of communication & transparency from CoA.

Hey, Kathie Tovo: Do you still want to "assure the public" that illegal activity won't be tolerated at the Candlewood, especially after today's report on what’s been going on at the Northbridge shelter?
“Hmm… ‘Hard choices.’ Does this mean a) lying about Candlewood becoming a women’s shelter, b) completely ignoring the alternatives we laid out, c) letting the unhoused camp everywhere without a plan for 2+ years, or d) all of the above? Perhaps you meant BAD choices,
@MayorAdler
Houston only spends ~55M/yr on its homeless solution. Almost all PSH is priv. funded or pub.-priv. part., planned 5+years ahead, & squeezed value from tax dollars. Public doesn't pay a huge bond every few yrs for more $. If it worked for Houston why not ATX?

Mr. Mayor, the Candlewood is located between two Asian-owned businesses. Its conversion to PSH housing would endanger these neighboring, diverse workplaces. D6 has the highest concentration of Asians in

Austin is no place for hate. The City's Office of Civil Rights and
@Austin_Police
will provide education on how to identify civil rights violations, how to respond, and how to report civil rights violations. The first virtual event is at 6 p.m. today.
For $9.5 mil council could've purchased 193 Boxabl houses for the unhoused. Instead, they used $9.5 mil for ~50 individuals. Does Casar really believe this is the most efficient & cost effective way to help the unhoused?
Elon Musk’s $50k, 375-sq ft home
The Wilco Appraisal District valuation for CW Suites is $2.5M for 2021. Why does COA want to pay almost 4X the appraised value- $9.55M - to purchase CW? Even if the market value was 2X the appraised value ($5M), that would still mean COA is paying almost $5M more for some reason.
“My community hardly had any say in this…” 🙄 oh the hypocrisy 🙄
That never stopped you,
@VanessaForATX
, in voting 4 the Candlewood purchase that directly impacts neighborhoods, schools, & small businesses. You also helped sour relationships w/your regional partners in Wilco.
Oregon county lost $1 billion in 2020 as residents fled crime, homelessness: 'It's like Portland died'- A Liberal Hell Hole, Democrat Run Cities have gone to hell because of the Failed Democrat Leadership!
POSTPONED! We hear the Candlewood renovation contract extension has been postponed until a future Council meeting. Thank you to everyone who raised a red flag on this item. 🚩
The families, businesses that make StopCW secured a cautious win today as the clock ran out on Council agenda for CW deal. It's still in due diligence until mid-June & we have no plans to let up pressure until then, (wknd rally). Unknown what Council plans in 6 wks after break.
It’s true: the ultra-rich “are not like you and me.”
They don’t care who’s next door to you because they can afford to not have neighbors! They recommend things like eliminating SF zoning or placing shelters next to thriving businesses.

Thank you Wilco for standing by us today to find the best solution for both the community & the unhoused.

WAIT A MINUTE … weren’t we all told by
#atxcouncil
that the Candlewood was going to be used as a domestic violence shelter? And if so, why isn’t
@kxan
calling out this lie for what it is?
The city is turning the Candlewood into what we understand is a COVID isolation shelter. A security fence went up this week among other activity. We welcome our temporary neighbors as they recover.
Friendly advice: Stay away from the pool for now.
#SCOTX
orders the “Austin City Council to change its ‘deceitful’ ballot language for Prop A.” This isn’t the 1st time Austin City Council used “deceitful language” to reframe controversial issues, like Candlewood, or make empty “pledges” to our community.
.
@natashaD1atx
you emailed us that u would support CM Kelly & D6. Then u went back on your word like others did. How can we believe u will take care of our community, when the main ppl benefiting from your voting don’t seem to be our community or the unhoused? Maybe “next time?”
I have no intention of circumventing our ballot measure process. Today’s 9-2 vote sends a clear message:
#ATXCouncil
will not undermine the will of its voters. This 1 year extension allows May's election to play out & ensure stability for our officers, regardless of the outcome.
ICYMI: some of the crucial questions CoA promised to deliver us 66 days ago and haven’t. What is their plan to treat the underlying causes of homelessness in these PSH units? W/o treatment & medical services?
Won’t you adopt a wayward shopping cart,
@ZoForAustin
, and help us find its rightful home? We reserved one just for you from one of

It’s not over until it’s over! While we expect the CoA will pursue other, more preferable options than Candlewood, we need to make sure this current plan is off the table for good! We need everyone to call in & oppose Item
#13
for the 8/11 CoA Meeting.
County Attorney Delia Garza complains to city staff about DPS arrests causing a heavy workload. As of Sept. 15th DPS has seized 7.72 lbs of heroin, 615.57 lbs of cocaine. Recovered 220 stolen vehicles. Seized 209 firearms. Worked 359 crash investigations
The city of Austin isn’t wasting any time, even with lawsuits having been filed. All Candlewood guests have been told to leave on a Sunday afternoon (of all times).
This is more evidence of why the Candlewood shelter was a terrible idea in the first place. There was no plan going into the purchase, zero communication with neighbors, and now we have no idea when or even if it will open.
CW would be the most expensive-cost per unit-PSH hotel the City would buy. Is there a price/unit the City won’t pay? Is there any evid. showing ppl w/sig. mental health & sub. issues will actually & successfully get care when trans. & healthcare are miles away w/only caseworkers?
I was glad to attend the ribbon cutting ceremony for The Adler yesterday in beautiful D9. The renaming of this housing complex to The Adler is a testament to the legacy of
@MayorAdler
and his advocacy for affordable housing in Austin. It was an honor to join! 🏡✂️
No, this isn’t a homeless camp. These are FULLY PAID GUESTS of the
@Candlewood
during the city of Austin’s takeover of the hotel. They were originally told to leave or pay more days ahead of this weekend’s move-out deadline.
Listen to their story here:
APD open records shows crime increase for communities surrounding PSH for the homeless.CoA is busy tackling its agenda to solve homelessness but hasn't answered impact of increase in crime for communities near PSH, like Roadway Inn.
How is it that CoA says crime doesn't go up near these permanent supportive housing units for the unhoused, when our open records request from the Austin Police Department indicate otherwise?
💰 Austin City Council to vote on approving HALF A MILLION dollars to repair damage to vacant hotels, including burglary and vandalism at the Candlewood.

BREAK-IN at the Candlewood! The suspect was in and out quickly around 10:30 a.m. The empty hotel still has TVs and furnishings. We wonder if he and any friends will be back, and if our neighbors should watch their backyards and places of business tonight.
Please join us this Sunday, June 13th @ 12pm for a peaceful protest at 10811 Pecan Park Blvd. Bring your family to enjoy pizza and drinks & get an opportunity to meet our District 6 CM Mackenzie Kelly. See you there!!
We're excited to see this bill pass Senate committee UNANIMOUSLY on Monday! SB 1214 would require a hearing before converting a property (e.g. the Candlewood in NW

from becoming a “copycat city” like Seattle, Portland, or San Francisco by voting today!
See if you’re eligible at . Polls close at 7 p.m. today.
Today marks the 1 yr anniversary where we joined together as a community, & created a movement to demand answers & transparency from our Austin City Council. 🙌🏽 We will continue to fight for all in our community: housed and unhoused!
News flash: The Candlewood hasn’t had security since it was purchased as far as we can tell, except for when used as a COVID shelter.
What a disaster for the neighborhood and NW Austin!
On June 13th @ 12pm, plz join us for a peaceful protest @ 10811 Pecan Park Blvd., to tell City to stop the purchase. It's inhumane for City to harm both the community (PSH hotels inc. local crime) & the unhoused (no access to resources vital for treatment, purpose & growth).
City's new resolution for buying CW makes new ref. to it being used for domes. viol. victims-BUT, NO guarantees it won't be used for the homeless or anything else. Given our lack of trust- no notice, no communication., promises unfulfilled-what's to stop City from "bait &switch"?
"The city doesn't do a good job of giving us a voice. Then I see a tweet: 'We had a successful town hall meeting.' The community that you are impacting has no voice, yet you call it a success? This is exactly why we are all here today." -Rupal Chaudhari.
Housing 1st (HF) appears to have a 2% success rate in ATX so far. HF leaves ppl w/schizophrenia W/O treatment of meds (a 60%success rate) 2 end up battling delusions & hallucinations on their own. Is this the type of care
@NatashaD1atx
referred to 4 ppl w/ serious mental illness?
Meanwhile,
@GregCasar
supported a plan to purchase the Candlewood hotel that won’t fix homelessness, will make the neighborhood more dangerous, and has already divided the NW Austin community.
Consistency, please.
We’re demanding more for our community!
I oppose
@TxDOT
’s current plan because it won’t fix traffic AND will further divide us. Let’s listen to community plans like
@ReconnectAustin
, support transit, and make I-35 safer.
#ATX
Sounding an alarm on Council's latest women's shelter 'bait & switch' tactic. SAFE (Stop Abuse For Everyone) previously recommended against using Candlewood since it's in Wilco jurisdiction (limits protections for undocumented immigrants) & doesn't comply w/building requirements.

Council members assured us the ARCH(shelter)changed. That it wasn’t a cause for concern 2 public safety & we shouldn’t expect crime @ Candlewood.Yet this happened…yesterday. Imagine if this shooting had been @ Candlewood w/families living right behind it?
Stop Candlewood is now MOVE Candlewood — Making Our Voices Equal in Austin! New name (which better reflects our focus and what we’ve learned), and the same vision. Learn more:
The Austin homelessness czar’s office must think $15M for the Candlewood is a great bargain …
… for 6% of the “1300+” units in their imaginary pipeline, according to this screenshot from their quarterly report.
Let’s find a better use for that $15 million! Move Candlewood!!!
While the CoA is focused on putting out the fires they started when they removed the camping ban in 2019; why aren’t they trying to prevent people from becoming homeless? Wouldn’t that be an effective place to start 1st & invest valuable resources in?
No excuse for refusing to enforce a law supported by an overwhelming majority of Austin voters.
Let's not risk TX penalties or $ + time in court when we could enforce and use City resources like the Airport Hilton which can house 250+ people to help the homeless literally today.
06/19,Matt Mollica says it's the community's responsibility; yet our community has zero input, zero voice & zero transparency in the process. How are we, the community, supposed to do this w/o leaving the unhoused vulnerable to sub.abuse/mental ill. w/no access to med.svcs/rehab?
“What’s happening now, is [the former Candlewood] is going to house 50 people, potentially, and the services are going to be questionable.” -Tom Wolf.
Thank you to CBS Austin for the coverage of our event on Saturday and for the interview with Tom!
CoA is striving to place PSH in every district. Evidence shows these are only estab. in lower-income to middle-income neighborhoods or areas on the verge of becoming lower-income. Why are there none in resource-dense & affluent areas of ATX like Pemberton Heights or Tarrytown?
Williamson County has people experiencing homelessness just like Travis County. This is a regional challenge and we need to all be offering solutions and working together to help those who need it.
Dear CM Vanessa Fuentes (
@vanessa4atx
), didn't you tell us that the Candlewood would become a "women's shelter" when you voted for it, even though we said it would actually be open to those with substance abuse and mental illness?
Like Northbridge?
Our community found out today that City is still considering to purchase the CW Suites when they reconvene (since the due diligence period actually ends in August). Please continue to write & call your CMs in opposition to CW. Our fight isn’t over yet..”-CM Kelly
The City finds itself embroiled in yet another lawsuit. This is what happens when you ignore communities and businesses — you know, the people you’re supposed to serve?
NEW: The group Save Austin Now and four business owners announced they are suing the city over what they deem is the lack of enforcement of Prop B. The group asked in a news release, "Why are they allowed to continue public camping which is illegal throughout the City of Austin?”
We keep throwing money at the problems of homelessness and drug addiction in

CoA told us, “…something was better than nothing.” Doesn’t that indicate their lack of confidence?
These aren’t just “some ppl” that need “some” kind of WAREHOUSING plan.
It’s a complex issue that needs a well-conceived plan, to benefit our unhoused in them.
