Very concerning reports coming out about the protest at UT. Peaceful protests should never be met with violence. We need answers — including why DPS is there on campus.
UT Austin has taken drastic steps that will very likely negatively impact student success and campus climate. Eliminating 60 positions sounds like it goes well beyond “reduc[ing] overlap” in programs.
UPDATE: At least 60

I’m astonished to read in a local blog that most of the City Council may endorse Kirk Watson. I served with several of these Council Members, and I know they don’t support the racial profiling of communities of color, so why would they endorse the person who invited DPS into this
In 2017 and 2018, I brought resolutions to Council directing the City Manager to negotiate to bring a Major League Soccer team to Austin with a stadium on public land. Super excited to be here today to cheer on Austin FC!

Why would they endorse a mayor who supported hiring Art Acevedo, chief of the department that failed to test rape kits and thus denied justice to sexual assault survivors for years? A mayor who proposed a no-bid contract to McKinsey & Co. and misled colleagues about other public
Regardless of the outcome on Prop B, my D9 staff and I will continue working to support safe, stable, permanent housing for all of our neighbors. In the weeks ahead, I hope we see even > private support for that goal. It will take our whole community to end homelessness in Austin
Thank you to these musicians from Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders for getting the Women’s March off to a great start!

Like many of you, I'm also frustrated by the situation. As the Council Member who required an audit of the winter storm response, you can bet I'm committed to understanding what has happened and determining next steps. 3/3
Some City Council Members have spoken out against these same issues, which makes the situation even more puzzling, if the blog endorsement rumors are true.
As I talk with folks across the city, most express concern about the current Council leadership. Our city needs a mayor who
Our community is going hungry.
District 2 is in need of a mass food distribution operation immediately.
Together with

meeting today and heard Alex Strenger mocking sexual assault survivors. I am so sorry to those survivors who heard him and grateful to the City Council for speaking up against his awful and offensive comments.
Yet another controversial decision re. policing coming from the Watson-Garza administration with no input from our elected City Council – and even worse – none from our community. Austin deserves a new Mayor who values both.
Great way to start off National Coming Out Day with a celebration of Austin's new rainbow crosswalks. Thanks to city staff who worked long hours this weekend completing this project, our LGBTQIA+ commissioners, and to Austin Pride & my D9 staff who helped re-initiate this project
Pretty excited to see the Ann Richards Marching Stars (& my ⭐️) at the 2021 Macy’s parade! Plz donate if you can so all the girls have an opportunity to go perform.

And they’re off! After 11 1/2 years of Thursday Council meetings, it’s a little odd not to be on the dais, but I’m having fun talking about urban politics up the street at UT. Best wishes to
@ZoForAustin
and the entire City Council as they hold their first mtg today.
Attended tonight’s vigil with
@BetoORourke
and
@TexasAFLCIO
to remember the lives of those lost in last year’s winter storm and demand changes to the power grid.
When I was a child, my mom & a small group of school nurses joined a local union, and I saw right away how that improved her working conditions and allowed her to focus more on the students she served.
It was honor to be among other leaders (incl.
@BetoORourke
&
@AndyBrownATX
) in taking this symbolic gesture that will lead to more action to curtail hate and bias. I hope this encourages more leaders to speak loudly and passionately in support of our Jewish community. 2/3
Great night among other supporters working to save the historic Lions Municipal Golf Course and to expand its role as a community space with programs for all. Thanks

My prayers for swift healing are with the victims of last night's mass shootings and their families. At every level of government, we must work harder to prevent these terrible and preventable acts of gun violence. 3/3

Exciting news at the housing committee today: the 2018 policy I initiated to prioritize affordable housing for families w/generational ties to Austin -- esp. East Austin -- is about to be used in our community land trusts!
Today Council passed my resolution to strengthen our local food system and address food insecurity and access from by improving and expanding the system.
I am saddened and angered by this act of hate and bigotry within our city. I hope the perpetrators will be brought to justice swiftly and held accountable for their actions.

Today the city worked in partnership to distribute water to our most vulnerable community members. Tomorrow, 2/20, the city's water distribution sites will open across the city. Times and locations will be announced in the a.m.

Thanks
@JackCraver
for this insightful and moving profile of former Council Member Chris Riley. And thanks
@ChrisRileyATX
for your decades of public service to this city! Austin is a better place because of your work on the Sobering Center, transportation, & so many other issues.
Today I wrote about the grandaddy of Austin urbanism, Chris Riley, who tells me that he's at peace with death because –– among other things –– he believes his hometown's future is in good hands.
As I finished my last class of the semester today and got ready to leave campus, students and faculty were gathering near the Tower for a peaceful protest, and I saw these two signs. Important messages. I hope we never have another day at UT like yesterday.

As an early member of Austin's Hate Crimes Task Force, I know we have tremendous work still to do, and I’m committed to providing the resources necessary to curtail hate and bias through swift and deliberate response and community healing.
