HISA is proud to share that racing-related equine fatalities in Q1 2024 dropped by nearly 38% compared to Q1 2023. While even one fatality is too many, we are pleased to see the progress we are making.
Today, we released our 2024 Q1 Metrics Report, showing our commitment to transparency and safety in U.S. Thoroughbred racing. The racing-related fatality rate for Q1 dropped to 0.84 per 1,000 starts from 1.35 in the same period last year.

Nothing is more important to HISA than driving down the rate of equine fatalities in Thoroughbred racing. I am encouraged to see HISA’s rate trending in the right direction, but there is much work to be done. We will continue to work diligently to raise the bar for safety.
HISA has released its 2023 Equine Fatality Rate, finding that tracks under HISA’s jurisdiction experienced a lower rate of equine fatalities (1.23 per 1,000 starts) than those outside HISA’s jurisdiction (1.63 per 1,000 starts) in 2023. Read more here:

The new IAP will help us ensure that the process for adjudicating potential violations of HISA’s medication rules is uniform, efficient and fair. I look forward to bringing seasoned experts together to make sure each case is handled with the utmost integrity and professionalism.
HISA and the Horseracing Integrity & Welfare Unit (HIWU) are now accepting inquiries from individuals interested in adjudicating Controlled Medication Rule Violations as part of the new Internal Adjudication Panel (IAP).
