Happy Friday!
As my mom said when she sent this to me, "When all else fails and your back is broken under total sanctions, you do this, this is
#Iran
." Man I love that country.
The more I think about
@RonanFarrow
story on
@CBS
& Les Moonves the more I wonder why the broader issues cited in that piece aren't being discussed. The everyday treatment of female producers is as concerning as Moonves' own actions plus... they span the industry.
Sources in
#Iran
say even when not in protest, women are walking around

without hijab and no one seems to be saying anything, one source said even at the airport women are hijab less

Masih Alinejad isn’t just an Iranian journalist and activist. She’s on the U.S. government payroll and works for the increasingly “rabidly pro-Trump” Voice of America. Media outlets that host her should tell us that

Some exciting news… my grandma aka LOVE OF MY LIFE, ultimate role model, bad*ss historian has a street now in
#Tehran
I present to you Mansoureh Ettehadieh Street 🥳
I don't know how many times I have to read a headline about
#Iran
that breaks my heart. Why are the lives of Iranians disposable? Do we not have compassion for the hurt, the pains, the struggles of the people of Iran? Why must we be so callous?
Five years.
It’s been five years since the Iranian regime arrested my incredibly brave and courageous cousin Niloufar Bayani. Keep her and her colleagues and all the other innocent Iranians in your thoughts.

Iran's President responds to Trump's threats with the number of Iranian civilians that were killed in the downed

flight.
A moment in history that Iranians will never forget and for which the US never faced consequences.
This graphic is making the rounds in social media in honor of

For non-Persian speakers/readers: it is a play on words. Absolutely heartbreaking.
On September 9th I spoke to a group of
#Iranian
students who lost their visas as they were headed to the US. They are still in Iran, still at a loss of what to do.
My latest for NBC
This is a dangerous road to go down. We will no doubt through this revolution have many policy disagreements but attacking journalists, activists, policy makers & accusing them of horrendous crimes and allowing our pain to rule us will hurt us all down the road.
#IranRevoIution
What is truly heartbreaking here is seeing a country that itself is struggling under the weight of economic sanx & covid, where they have shortages of their own goods helping another country facing some similar struggles. 💔
Tehran’s Mehrabad international airport earlier today - as boxes and boxes of relief supplies along with a 22-member Iranian medical team left for Beirut.

A few things:
1. The Shah forced women out of the hijab through a compulsory royal decree, taking away a women's choice. The law was faced with enormous backlash and subsequently caused religious women to not pursue higher ed or join the workforce as much.
First the Islamic Republic oppressed women via forced hijab, silenced them by diminishing their legal rights & leadership positions, robbed them of their futures by reintroducing child marriage, and now it is literally erasing women from society.
News Alert!! My mother’s first book is out in bookstores all around
#Tehran
. It is a spy novel that will have you crying from laughter.
The Spies of Shamsabade Bala
A novel based on historical and non historical events.
One more time for the people in the back👇
My Iranian dad is routinely wowed by how the algo knows he likes soccer videos and weird diy hacks- as well as videos of people shuffling- who knew.
Worst thing: when you end up on the wrong tiktok channel &need to find your way back.
The best part of TikTok isn’t the posting...it’s the algorithm used for the for you page that serves you the most perfectly curated TikToks. It’s truly a marvel.
I’m lucky to have a mom who took me all over Iran. We’d take a bus, go from city to village from site to site. I’ve gone from one oldest churches in the world, to Kandovan to Mashhad (yes I’m a Mashti) back to Tehran and beyond again. Despite the heat, Persepolis astounded me.
My grandma & role model is a Doctor of History & at the ripe age of 87 continues to work & write, she has fully earned the right to that title and I’d be appalled if she was told otherwise.
Women are not just here to be spouses & secondary to men’s lives

It’s my birthday. I’m 28 now, I only felt older because I had to buy
#Nowruz
presents for kids because I’m now no longer a kid I’m a Khaleh Leila.
So here is me celebrating 3 in

with that classic choco banana cake iykyk.
Today was the last trial for my incredible and strong cousin Niloufar. Accusation of “sowing corruption on earth” for her and three others which carried the death penalty were dropped.

This is the best news I’ve heard all day.
TV bookers: for God's sake get some female voices on air about the Iran crisis, preferably Arab or Persian. It doesn't have to be me but it needs to be someone.
This is a travesty. Millions of people struggling just to make it day to day, struggling to make enough to eat, to take care of their children. It is heartbreaking.
I call my grandma every 2 days. Partly to check in, partly to hear wisdom & historical insights. At 87 she is spending quarantine in
#Iran
researching, writing books, doing what she has always done: documenting history. This act of normalcy is incredibly calming for me

1 of my fav smells is car exhaust/pollution mixed with recently watered plants/trees & hot wet pavement. Why do I like such a smell? It smells like

summers. Did the city condition me to like the scent of pollution? Yes. Eau du paykan anyday. 2x on sundays. Don’t @ me

and his guests - they're putting together history, analysis, on the ground breaking news- I urge everyone to watch
I’d chalk this up to Iranian strategy rather than impotence. Iran’s gov doesn’t make decisions thoughtlessly.
Plus, this is symbolic of America’s wrongs against
#Iran
. Iranians inside & abroad do not think this was a show of impotence. It’s a national tragedy. 66 children died
This is peculiar. Despite thundering threats at the time, Iran never retaliated for the downing of
#IR655
... if anything, it became a symbol of Iranian impotence.
Why would Rouhani want to draw attention to that?
I feel like a broken record but
#Iran
having ties with Al Queda actually makes no sense. For starters aside from being different sects, they are looking to achieve different goals. Any report of ties between the two should be analyzed with skepticism.
Word on the street from

: free concerts & festivals everywhere in the city to boost spirits. Things feel bleak, everything is $$$ but there is music and joy everywhere - jazz festival is beginning & Pallett just performed in kakheh Niavaran -

in a nutshell
Iran petrochemical workers have gone on strike in Asalouyeh, Bushehr, Oct10, day23 of Iran Protests. Up until now, strikes had been limited to Kurdistan Province plus students and some online businesses. This is a major escalation. #مهسا_امینی
Hello world!
If you are in
#Iran
... tune in for an interview with my Grandma Mansoureh Ettehadieh on her life as a historian and a review of her work. Details below! 👇🏼
This is the problem with sanctions. The planes are old, can’t get new parts, bad things happen.
I’m old enough to remember the last sanctions regime when planes were literally dropping out of the sky all summer.
Sanctions hurt average

Ruth Bader Ginsburg and my grandma Mansoureh Ettehadieh have the same birthday and are the same age... both have turned 87 today, March 15th and both are women I look up too.
Here’s to my Amaman 🥳

Breaking: Trump issues order to deny U.S. visas to senior Iranian government officials and their family members
This comes after Rouhani’s speech that called for sanctions to be lifted for talks to move forward.
#UNGA
#Iran
It seems to be a lack of understanding of how Iran and Iranians work. Sanction the supreme leader antogonzies, makes it near impossible for talks. Sanctioning Zarif— makes the people mad, he has decent approval ratings & people view him as a voice of reason
Let's be clear—These new sanctions add no meaningful economic pressure on Iran. They are expressly intended to make it harder for Iran to justify diplomatic negotiations + harder for the US to offer sanctions relief. They are shackles on diplomacy.
This is a critical post- it is an unpopular take but it is the most realistic take I've seen. The
#Iranian
diaspora really & truly discounts the base of the Iranian government, millions of Iranians & discounts the many qs that need to be answered
Most of the Iran analysis American policymakers, and especially the hawks, rely upon is pure wishcasting.
And the professional Iran-watchers are mostly wishcasters. It's dangerous for America, and I hope to give you an example that will help you see how and why.
I don't claim

And I'll end with this – Tehran's historic Vali-asr street, said to be the longest street in the Middle East, is known for plane trees SO colossal that, at points, they form a lush, green canopy overhead that obscures the sky from view.
The next time an “Iran expert” tells you that he supports the most crushing sanctions on the regime because they are the best way to support the Iranian people, be sure to ask him the last time he lived through something like this.

Pete Buttigieg says Democrats should focus on cutting the deficit, which fell under Obama and is soaring under Trump.

Among the top ten Iran analysts appearing most frequently on major US news networks to discuss the Soleimani fallout there were precisely ZERO women. Only CNN featured any - 3 out of 10. C'mon news networks, there are masses of GREAT women experts on Iran

didn’t cancel summer 2020. Our American “exceptionalism” did. Much of the rest of the world is participating in summer 2020 because they were responsible. We are the kid in timeout because we don’t play well with others.
Twitter during
#IranProtests2022
or any Iran protest is interesting as it is really made up of people who want the same thing but have different ideas of how to get there yelling in the most toxic way into the ether. Most of whom, have never been to modern day Iran.
I think about this constantly: Just a little over a year ago there was 0 talk of war with Iran thanks to the JCPOA. Now, everyday we incrementally see escalation that could easily push either country into an unwanted war.
4. None of these points are meant to detract from some of the very real problems facing Iranian women but to ignore facts, figures and history does no one good.
Speaking to Iranian voters about their decision to sit out the elections and it's not just that they are apathetic or disillusioned- they are tired, and utterly exhausted.

2. Yes, women's leadership is lacking (as it is around the world) let's not forget that Iran has women in parliament & cabinet positions & the CEO of Iran Air is a woman (just a few examples)
