I was 14 years old when Fast Car came out. I found an unexpected sanctuary in Tracy’s music. Her eyes, a window to peace, her smile, a testament to wisdom. In a world craving authenticity, her music offers a soulful exhale.

My daughters & I used to live in the mountains of Mexico among some of the poorest, most marginalized indigenous people in the world.
This letter that my then young daughter wrote to Santa reminds me of our calling to take care of one another as best we can.

A word of advice from a Native woman: The government used to pit Native tribes against each other to weaken us, rather than have us unite against the real enemy. Don’t fall into that trap. Let’s stay united and focused.

As a clinician, I worked with 14-year-olds who spoke of violence, but thanks to Canada’s strict gun laws, they couldn’t act on it. Heartbroken to hear of today’s tragedy in Georgia, where a 14-year-old opened fire and killed 4. Gun laws matter.

The Northern Lights, or ‘Waawaate’ in Ojibway, are not just lights in the sky to us. They are the spirits of our ancestors dancing in the night, communicating & guiding us with their radiant energy. We watch, we listen, and we remember.

Alexander Henry was a French explorer (1764). He wrote about his encounters with Ojibway Two-Spirits: “There are men who, from their youth, assume the dress & manner of women, & this is known to all the nation, yet they are not subject to any disgrace or reproach.”

Navigating the Israel/Palestine situation isn't a simple matter of picking sides. It's layered & intricate. While I oppose colonization as an Indigenous woman, I also firmly stand against acts that terrorize innocents. Endorsing violence is NEVER okay and not an option for me.

Should MN Gov. Tim Walz become the next VP, his Lt. Gov., Peggy Flanagan, an Ojibwe from the White Earth Nation, would be US history's first Indigenous female governor.
That means, in just this election alone, we could see these two women of color breaking glass ceilings.
Witnessed the brilliance and heart that

With Tim Walz as VP pick, Peggy Flanagan would likely become Minnesota’s Governor, making her the 1st Native American female governor. Flanagan, from White Earth Nation, is currently MN’s Lt. Governor. Kevin Stitt of OK, a Cherokee Nation member, has been governor since 2019. 🪶

As a kid, I was teased a lot at school. Kids in my class would call me “Ni**er lips” and “Prairie ni**ger” which is an Indigenous slur. I started painting & drawing when I was 9. My dad taught me & it became my safe space.
Painting became my passion and, it still is.

I wonder if J.D. Vance’s wife feels like she’s stuck with Palpatine’s right-hand man. J.D. has some archaic views on women. I think Usha would be better off joining Kamala Harris’ team.

So, basically they only like women if they can call them property? No wonder people like this tried to decimate the Indigenous matrilineal societies that existed in North America when the “Christian” settlers arrived on Turtle Island. They were afraid of us.
