Inspired by today's post of the Northern City Line stock move through Crouch End, I've drawn a map of the slightly bonkers route required after the aforementioned route became unfit for trains in 1970 - this was in use until 1975. Three fab photos too, credits on their captions.

ON THIS DAY: 10 years ago, the last C Stock ran in revenue service. My favourite trains to drive, I drove these on the District Line 1999-2001. A month after their last passenger trip, I joined units 5592/5517/5533 on their final journey from Hammersmith towards the scrapyard.

ON THIS DAY: 189 years ago, the London & Greenwich Railway commenced a demonstration service between Blue Anchor Lane and Grand Surrey Canal which lasted for six months. Full public opening came in February 1836, with this depiction of a bucolic looking Bermondsey from 1837.

ON THIS DAY: 154 years ago, the Tower Subway opened beneath The Thames. The world's first 'Tube' railway; 2'6" gauge track carried a cable-hauled car carrying just 12, it was uneconomical and closed 07/12/1870, becoming a pedestrian tunnel. Map: London Railway Atlas @CrecyRail

ON THIS DAY: 130 years ago, Wembley Park station opened to serve Sir Edward Watkin's park and aborted tower (Watkin's Folly), where the stadium is today. My great-grandfather (also Joseph Brown) was Watkin's butler, and I worked here for nine years, so two personal connections!

ON THIS DAY: 132 years ago, the last Great Western Railway 7ft. broad gauge service is pictured about to leave Paddington at 10:15. Over the following two days, 170 miles of GWR route were converted to 4ft. 8½in. gauge... that's a pretty impressive weekend engineering closure!

ON THIS DAY: 121 years ago, the Ealing & South Harrow Railway opened between Hanger Lane Junction and a very rural Park Royal & Twyford Abbey (pictured), with an intermediate station at North Ealing. Park Royal was relocated south in 1931 due to Western Avenue's construction.

ON THIS DAY: 186 years ago, the London & Southampton Railway opened from Nine Elms terminus (pictured) to Woking Common. Today's Wimbledon, Esher, Walton-on-Thames and Weybridge stations all opened with the line (as well as long-closed stations at Clapham Common and Kingston).
