On this day 160 years ago the world’s first underground railway, the Metropolitan Railway, opened in London! .It had seven stations and operated between Paddington and Farringdon. On its first day, it carried around 40,000 people.

January 2023 marks 90 years since Harry Beck’s Underground map was first published. It was an immediate hit. It is testament to the quality of the design that it continues to be widely used and has become an enduring symbol of London that merges design, art, history and culture.

2023 marks 90 years since Harry Beck’s Underground map was first published. Abandoning strict geographical accuracy, he redesigned the map as a simple diagram with the different railways shown as horizontal, vertical and diagonal lines.

In 1998 Yellow Pages commissioned Rufus Leonard to design a special livery and moquette for a C stock train to advertise their telephone directory on the Underground. The Yellow Pages train was in service on the Circle line until 1999. #MoquetteMonday

Acton Town station was originally built as Mill Hill Park in 1879. It was rebuilt in February 1910 and renamed in March the same year. #DYK the name Acton derives from the Old English words ‘ac’ meaning oak, and ‘tun’, meaning farm .#SundaySigns
