My dad told me that our freezer didn't get cold enough for ice cream, unlike my grandparents' refrigerator. I realized this had been a lie around age 40.

@ShaneGoldmacher
He did the exact opposite of avoiding the issue - saying Cuomo should resign if investigation found so. How is that avoiding it? Fake slur against Biden.
And what I like about this one is that you would think it’s rude because it calls me a scum bag jew And signs it disrespectfully, but then it very thoughtfully tells me that there’s more on the back page by writing (over). So thoughtful!
@gregsasso
2 of the 4 or 5 misspelled my name. All of them fell for the lie that I said something bad to a student of mine instead of to an internet troll. BTW the connection of said troll who launched an e-attack that led to death threats to me... was arrested for you know what in Jan.
If you are a professor at a well paid place (relatively speaking) complaining you are "not at all compensated" for reading admissions files... We are. We are paid to do research, teaching,... and service. Reading admissions files is part of (teaching and) service.
@JewishWonk
4th grade PS115 Queens - Mrs. Cadogan had us say a christian prayer every morning - my dad led fight against it... others afraid to... School stepped in to stop it. She retaliated later in assigning the only non-speaking roles in class play to those complaining jews.
DAMN DAMN DAMN. My 2 yr old just tested positive. Still in shock. But anger at this avoidable wave after wave will come soon. I might need to let someone control my twitter account.
I can’t put together words about the loss of my dear colleague Bob Jervis. He was still my consigliere on university policy/politics in the last weeks. Still publicly active in our biggest debates last week. His past contributions are famous. But present & future loss huge too.
I know there are so many worse things in the world, but today we had to say goodbye to our Cha-Cha, after only 6 years. Many big things are unfair. Losing this small thing is unfair.

It is exactly the point because the Kennedy example suggests that she should have retired earlier In the same strategic way he did. It is exactly the point that responds to the explicit point you made
This week I failed in protecting my child because I trusted

. We are doing our best. Tenured. Lots of privilege. But we can’t do it all for our 15 month old. We trusted

zero evidence politics works that way. much evidence Rs will ignore and not do right thing just bc Ds do. I like the way you see the world, but it's not accurate.
This is embarrassingly bad analysis, an abuse of the ideal point methods... and we are way past any excuse for not realizing that. This is only a result of assumptions that are far too wrong for this sort of analysis.
Chief Justice Roberts "is drifting left at a statistically significant rate — and at a rate roughly resembling Souter’s liberal turn in the 1990s,” said Lee Epstein, a law professor and political scientist at Washington University in St. Louis.

I won't be happy personally until their whole criminal enterprise has folded. But every day there's a new wrinkle. And the clock is ticking.
I cannot digest this yet. Tears and shock and guilt. And tragedy. Too much. One of the most generous people ive met in the discipline. Someone who learned from his own mistakes to become a better person. That. Is. Rare.
My friend and mentor Mat McCubbins passed away last night. He was a visionary researcher and an incredible teacher. He changed my life and that of so many others. He was a tremendous father and dedicated husband. See you on the other side, dude.
Requiring diversity statements from apps to jr level jobs, with great intentions I know, still can seem like putting the responsibility on those nearly completely new to the div probs in academia- like asking people admitted to ER what their plans are for fixing hospital admin.
Here's an optimistic thought. After 9/11, we spent trillions of dollars trying to stop terrorism. After this public health crisis, we'll likely spend a fortune on a problem that is easier to solve. If we do, this may well be the last pandemic the world ever sees.
On the antisemitism scale, Omar's comments have certainly been more than micro-aggressions and perhaps disregard concerns for intersectionality, but I still would trust her to save me when the Nazis come a million times more than I would trust a Republican in congress to do so.
The average American spends something like 5 hours per year on a plane. The mask mandate might be good or bad at the margin, but it is very unlikely to make a major difference in the overall course of the coronavirus.
@mattyglesias
Not in the stand alone tweet - she didn't deride it until called out. She amplified it directly... then later did stuff. Malpractice for either not knowing better or from not caring.
You know how the country heals? Not when Biden puts Republicans in his cabinet (big mistake) but when the GOP becomes a democracy-compatible party again and appoints Democrats to theirs.
@Brighthorizons
Why do you send unvaccinated caregivers without warning parents? Why not require vaccinations? Why not allow parents to request a vaccinated caregiver? I spent over an hour on hold only to hear that this is “not possible.” And even worse...,

Five years younger and without cancer. I think those two points are relevant. Also people did suggest he should retire for the same reason.
The penalties for cops lying or covering up should be extraordinarily high, financial and personal. And they should be required to vouch under oath regularly that they are not aware of x, y, z, among their fellow officers or tell what they know.
Biden should thank her for criticizing him and arguing with him and make a point of how good healthy debate like that is. A real adult doesn’t surround himself with yes people. Etc.
What's also interesting is that if you add temperature to this, higher temps are associated with lower spread (as most research predicts), controlling for other factors. So heat helps, but being outdoors helps, and you don't want it to be so hot that folks do everything inside.
GOP in effect had a a file dated weeks and weeks ago saying here's our defense for the rape accusation we didn't tell you about and how dare you raise at the last minute this rape accusation which we didn't tell you about
not sure where the 2yo is in the apartment... I called out “Are you being a good girl or bad girl?” … and in a tiny voice “bad girl” floats on the wind….
Can I add... separately... if you are sure you can tell who are the stars and winners and losers are by reading these files, you have not been paying attention to your own success rate in so doing. Can you tell a lot? Sure. Perfectly? Hell no. Close enough to perfectly? Hell no.
Yesterday brutal - fever then broke and finally got her to take some fluids. And this morning she's up at 7 (that's 3+ hrs early for her!) looking for particular toys. Hoping we're past the worst. Including finding the little monkey she's looking for...

disagree - he should be called out for complicity - he should have called out lies by lawyers and barred claims contradicting other claims made in court - estoppel, etc.
@NickWolfinger
Privately one can indeed give advice about how power structures work in academia, good and bad ones. Saying this publicly doesn't seem like sincere advice ... rather more like ... "real shame if something happened to your nice cv there"
@clhubes
I'm betting it happens most often when you post the most typical things about a toddler... which people have forgotten or been blind to or been lucky about..
I would love to trust the calendar he made when he was 17, but I've been told all week that male 17 yr olds aren't capable of responsibility, integrity, etc.
@OrinKerr
YES. How is it better to put the burden on civilians? Illegal force & abuse of power has to be met at some point by big league power... not some lawsuits in 2028. Let the state govts & state police draw the fire... People are being plucked off the street by secret forces.
Thread - On "Department Statements": Departments do not have expertise; individual scholars do. We all cringe when a journalist writes "A Harvard study says" There's no such thing as a Harvard study. Individual scholars do studies. Scholars are at their most free, at their most
ABDs and Postdocs on the job market: PLEASE STOP listing methods courses in your teaching interests. There are already a dozen people in the dept who can teach methods, and senior faculty are probably squatting on those classes anyway. Tout your unique content expertise instead!
Since some red state people think the minimum wage should be adjusted down for their states I assume they are willing to accept smaller stimulus checks too
Manchin: “Everyone wants to go, ‘Filibuster, filibuster, filibuster, get rid of that.’ That’s the easy way out…[if filibuster is eliminated] what makes you think they won’t reverse it immediately if they don’t like what we do?”
I just was told that the person involved in some recent discussions of harassment vis a vis APSA was known as a harasser to at least one then grad student in the 1960s...

staff would “ignore” written requests for vaccinated caregivers. So much "wash your packages" theater on your website but obscuring this most basic step. Thank you for listening.
Well, I guess gaslighting is better than gas-chambering... Next she'll tell us "arbeit macht frei" is just an aspirational call for hard work and workplace equality
From the river to the sea is an aspirational call for freedom, human rights, and peaceful coexistence, not death, destruction, or hate. My work and advocacy is always centered in justice and dignity for all people no matter faith or ethnicity.
@NateMJensen
American politics political science? Are you allowed to pour bourbon in class? I mean, not to give to them. Unless the talk is going very badly.
Fan of theory in many forms, but far too much book "theory" (& article theory is pointless padding or blather. As one person put it, there should be fewer theories than papers. Not every important argument or theory needs a COMPLETELY NEW THEORY and the pretense of novelty.
