We really need to recover the Bible’s theology of law and gospel which was recovered and taught by the best of the Reformed tradition. Law as covenant - Do and live Gospel as promise - Live Law as standard - Do Gospel as covenant - Live and do (evangelical obedience)

And this passes as 'reformed' theology? No surprise to see antinomianism rife in big Eva. This statement denies the gospel contains law & yet our Lord said, "If you love me, you will obey my commandments" & commissioned us to teach the nations "everything I have commanded you."

Theonomy is a problem because it collapses law and gospel at the level of Christ’s kingdom. It says He saves you & then graciously enables you to build His kingdom by faithful works of obedience. But the Bible says He gives His kingdom as a free gift received by faith alone.

4 dangers of conflating law & gospel: 1. It compromises the holy justice of God. 2. It throws believers back on their own obedience for justification. 3. It robs believers of assurance and consolation in Christ. 4. It robs Christ of receiving all the glory in justification.

The covenant of grace does not depend on our antecedent obedience. That would turn it into a covenant of works. Rather the Spirit freely gives every grace of the covenant, every act of obedience, every blessing in Christ. It is grace upon grace, one grace after another.

The vote to direct the credentials committee to exclude all SBC churches with women pastors only failed by 500 messengers. We only need about 250 more churches, or even less, to dilute that margin since each church gets a minimum of 2 messengers.

The law - You must perfectly obey the law for your righteousness/justification. The gospel - Christ perfectly obeyed the law for our righteousness/justification. If so, then you affirm the law/gospel distinction not only for unbelievers but for justified believers.

The Gospel is, indeed, opposed to the law. For the law works wrath and announces a curse, whereas the Gospel preaches grace and blessing. —Second Helvetic Confession 13.1

Which way SBC? The Law Amendment : the Bible says it, so let’s do it. Period. The Cooperation-Bros : the Bible may say it, but hold on, it’s actually quite complicated. Let’s be careful, form a committee, issue qualifications, etc…

All true. I would add that since our sins against the law were the reason Christ had to shed His blood, then we know the same law teaches us what Christ expects of us as believers. The law is the standard or rule of love for the believer.

The law of God is good, holy, and right. The law reveals truth about God's character. The law teaches and instructs the church. The law vitally exposes sin, but the law cannot save. Only the gospel saves. The Christian lives under the reign of grace, not the reign of law.
