He/him. Southsider, Organizer, Renter, LGBTQ+ Latino 🏳️🌈. Minneapolis 9th Ward City Council Member. DFL and Labor Endorsed. Official City Updates:
@mplsward9
Results continue to come in for tonight’s Presidential Primary in Minnesota.
Uncommitted beat Joe Biden in the 9th Ward.
He can still course correct these atrocities, stand firm against genocide & prevent another Trump presidency.
Listen to Minnesota.
My parents have never been able to vote here in the US. But they’ve always been able to dream.
And today, decades later, as their son, I held their dreams with me as I cast my vote for the DFL-Labor endorsed candidate for City Council in Ward 9: me.
As the first LGBTQ+ Latino 🏳️🌈 elected to the Minneapolis City Council, I want to say that I’m disappointed & disgusted with Target’s decision to remove Pride Merchandise. You can’t use our community to make profits and then dump us when you think we are a burden to your profits.
For the past two weeks, I’ve been taking the light rail to work. It’s been fast and efficient (10 minute ride).
But every day has been different and it’s clear things need to change. What are things you want implemented to increase safety and ridership?
Woke up and it still feels unreal. Y’all are sending the kid from the East Phillips Neighborhood to City Hall. I’ll have more to say tonight. But for now thank you all who made this possible ❤️
I’m calling for an immediate and permanent ceasefire, the return of all hostages, and an end to the siege of Gaza.
The world is watching a genocide happen in Gaza before our eyes. 1/
A picture is worth a thousand words. This graphic, created by
@SahanJournal
, depicts the severity of the problem at hand.
The city is using taxpayer dollars to conduct an ineffective and regulatory approach rather than a public health approach to address homelessness. 1/
To think that I came out 4 years ago on this month and I never thought I would! Now I get to serve as the first LGBTQ+ Latino on the Minneapolis City Council. Hope you all had a wonderful pride 🏳️🌈🏳️🌈
Grateful to live next to the Light Rail.
On days like today, it makes my commute to the Minnesota United vs. Club Puebla game more efficient. 🚊 ⚽️
Let’s make transit more affordable and accessible for everyone.
Just found out that the New York City Council approved a measure to allow immigrants who are not U.S. citizens to vote in municipal elections! This is huge and it might be something we can do here in Minneapolis.
Statement on not seeking the Star Tribune Editorial Board’s Endorsement.
I am proud to represent the most racially diverse Ward in the City of Minneapolis. I can always count on the residents of Ward 9 to stand up for what’s right. 1/
My family and I were evicted when I was 13. I haven’t seen many of our Midtown Phillips neighbors since.
Today, though, I knocked on Connie’s door. She knew me then. And she talked with me today.
From a scared, displaced teenager to the DFL-endorsed candidate for City Council.
DFL endorsed!
Thank you Ward 9 neighbors for your unanimous endorsement and support to send The Kid from East Phillips back to city hall for another term.
I can’t wait to hit the doors this summer as your DFL endorsed candidate for Re-Election.
Aisha is a steadfast leader in South Minneapolis. The attacks on democracy enacted onto her and her delegates is unacceptable. I can’t even describe what I witnessed with my own eyes. Thank you for leading with integrity and for making sure everyone was as safe as possible.
Today was horrifying, unacceptable, and indicative of the growing threat to progressive, pro-people candidates and movement leaders.
See my campaign’s statement on the violence perpetrated by the Nasri Warsame campaign at the Ward 10 convention today.
We were told to wait on a recommendation from the governor’s task force on Uber and Lyft before passing an ordinance in Minneapolis.
That recommendation did not happen.
The Minneapolis City Council will pass a strong minimum wage policy for drivers next month.
NEW: The Minnesota governor's task force on Uber and Lyft ended its final meeting, after months of negotiations, without a recommendation for the Legislature on minimum rates because the companies and drivers could not agree on employment classification and preemption.
My residents in East Phillips never gave up. A nearly 10-year fight is basically over.
The City has accepted a $3.7 million guaranty as proof of payment for the purchase of the Roof Depot site from the community.
We fought and won.
The Minneapolis City Council passed our Minimum Wage Ordinance for Uber/Lyft drivers with a veto-proof majority (9-4).
Small businesses are required to pay minimum wages before tips & billion dollar out-of-state tech companies should be too.
@MplsWard2
@MplsWard6
This is why
@aishaforward10
and I are moving forward with an encampment response policy for the City of Minneapolis this year.
We cannot continue with our current inhumane approach. This makes me sick to my stomach.
I was born and raised in East Phillips. Ward 9 is my home.
Unlike my opponent, I think Ward 9 deserves a leader who believes in Ward 9 enough to want to live here.
I’m running for City Council to fight for this community - to fight for our community.
I would like to hear what concrete plan
@GovTimWalz
has this legislative session to help support our teachers & students in Minneapolis. We need action this session NOT next year.
The silence & lack of urgency to address this $115 million gap is severely impacting our residents.
Congratulations to the next Vice-President of the Minneapolis City Council
@aishaforward10
!
The youngest Vice-President in the history of this city. We are in good hands sister ❤️
The
@MinnesotaDFL
made a decision that will hurt first time, young, queer, and BIPOC candidates.
It prohibits caucuses from supporting candidates if “No DFL endorsement” occurs.
Caucuses are supposed to help communities access & build power. Not continue to leave us behind.
Aurin is officially the Minneapolis City Council Member for Ward 12!
@aurinmpls
Thank you for serving the Ward 9 office with dedication & integrity. You helped deliver big wins for South Minneapolis.
Your residents are lucky to have a collaborative, responsive, and engaged CM.
Only in MPLS can you VETO & then try to change the media narrative to claim a victory.
Our ordinance had worker protections, safety mechanisms, accountability, & more than just a pinky promise from Uber.
You chose corporations over our communities of color and immigrants.
Mayor Frey’s veto is a slap to the face of thousands of workers in MPLS.
As Council members, our job isn’t to count on pinky promises from multi billion-dollar corporations that they’ll do the right thing.
Our job is to make laws that guarantee workers can earn a living wage.
All of Mpls is weaponizing the fire that burned down
@campnenookaasi
. The politicization of people lives being ruined is disgusting.
I want to remind the public that the Mayor is the only person that can evict encampments. The city council does not have authority over this. 1/
I write this update with a heavy heart.
This afternoon, the City was notified about a fire at Camp Nenookaasi located in the Midtown Phillips.
This update is an open invitation to share your thoughts on how we can better address this issue.
CW: violence, hate and death.
Trans Lives Matter. We’re witnessing an anti-trans violence epidemic.
Savannah Ryan Williams should be alive today and she mattered.
She who was shot in the head and left for dead on November 29, 2023 on Fourth Ave South near Lake Street. 1/
Accidentally knocked my Aunty’s door this evening! Guess that’s what happens when you are born and raised in the Ward you’re running to represent. 😉
¡Nos vemos en la calle!
Mixed emotions at the ballot box this morning. I voted for all my family members who cannot vote. ❤️
To protect my loved ones who will be impacted one way or another by these election results.
Let’s wake up tomorrow morning to a Minnesota that welcomes our immigrant neighbors.
Please share and donate.

My name is Jason Chavez and I am a proud Latino, queer Democratic Socialist, and I’m fighting for the community I was born and raised in.
I’m running for Ward 9 City Council because I know the answers to our collective struggles are within our community.
I’m excited to announce my re-election campaign kick-off (11/22/22) to continue representing the 9th Ward on the Minneapolis City Council.
Community-Led, Community-Centered. Always.

Republicans are agreeing with Don’s Islamophobic tropes.
This rhetoric is disgusting, dangerous, and wrong. It’s not what the 5th Congressional District represents.
WOW! The Driver’s Licenses for All Legislation just passed from the Transportation Finance and Policy in the MN House of Representatives. Community spoke loud and clear today and is one step closer. Great work
@RepAishaGomez
@MariaIsa
on answering the call from community 1/2
In the past 5 days we’ve read 3 different stories about City Hall.
Broken promises to address homelessness, mismanagement within the office of community safety & contractors not being paid, false statements about coaching, & secretive processes for serious police misconduct. 1/
NEW: Minneapolis police leaders used a secretive process to handle serious officer misconduct cases while keeping the details confidential, despite repeated claims to the contrary.
Lost dog in the Central Neighborhood! 35th and Portland. Currently staying at our place since they were freezing in the cold. Please share and help us find the owner.
The city’s response to homelessness includes fencing and dumping concrete rubble across lots.
A waste of tax payer dollars that could be used to permanently and safely house our neighbors.
Minneapolis owns a ton of land. We should be using that to address this crisis.
Minneapolis city officials dumped concrete rubble on two city lots formerly occupied by Camp Nenookaasi to deter homeless people from living on the land.

MN House passes SRO fix bill by a tally of 124 to 8. All of the red votes were from Democrats who weren't on board with a bill spelling out that SROs may continue to use prone restraints in school settings.
Dec. 30, 2020, community was sent into shock when an MPD Officer killed Dolal Idd in the 9th Ward.
Soon after, the family’s house was stormed, the parents were handcuffed, & today we don’t have justice for Dolal Idd & his family.
We cannot forget. We need accountability.
Community please be out in the lookout. A one-year old boy was stolen in the 9th Ward today. The vehicle is a white 2008 Buick Enclave (HTH234 license plate).
Please be on the look out. Call 9-1-1 if you have any info. We will keep everyone posted on updates.

It’s official. We are representing the 9th Ward on the Minneapolis City Council.
AND we are bringing the entire village with us.
Nearly 6-months ago, we launched our community-led & community-centered campaign for the 9th Ward. We are proud to have earned the DFL endorsement on the first ballot with 69% of the votes in a 5-way race.
See our full statement below.
#TeamChavez
I’m proud to support
@ElliottForWard1
as our next Council President. He’s thoughtful, transparent, & hardworking.
Ward 9 residents need someone who will prioritize an encampment response policy, community-led development of Lake & Minnehaha, & the East Phillips Urban Farm. 1/
After being sworn in today for my second term in office, I’m excited to announce that I am running for President of the Minneapolis City Council. The City Council will meet on January 8th to vote for our new leadership team and structure.
Non-citizens and those without voting rights will finally be able to caucus and become delegates
@MinnesotaDFL
. This is a HUGE victory for our community. It’s especially heartwarming for the 9th Ward knowing that our community will finally have a voice in the process ❤️
The 19 Bar burned after a vehicle crashed into a pole that energized the building and is suspected of starting the fire.
Help the employees with this go fund me page.
People were promised a more effective form of government where basic city services would be met & issues would be resolved.
We ended up getting a new government structure where we do not know who’s in charge and where it’s harder to help solve our constituents' problems.
While some Minneapolis City Council members say a "strong mayor" is making the city more efficient, others bemoan a growing bureaucracy that has made it harder to help solve residents' everyday problems.
Every year my birthday lands on the same day as National Coming Out Day. I spent most of my life trying to hide one of the most important parts of me. I know that one day we will live in a safe world where coming out does not even have to be a thing 🏳️🌈
Standing in solidarity with the 15,000 nurses with
@mnnurses
who overwhelmingly voted to authorize a strike in their fight for fair contracts.
This includes Abbott Northwestern and Children’s Minneapolis in the 9th Ward.
It’s day 90 and Camp Nenookaasi (in Phillips) is still without handwashing stations and bathrooms from the City of Minneapolis.
We should at least be providing these basic public health services to our residents.
Unhoused residents deserve dignity too.
@campnenookaasi
“The DSA aligned council majority” is a wild way to say 10 members of the council overturned the Mayor’s veto.
Last year, the Minnesota Legislature approved a minimum wage for Uber and Lyft drivers statewide (it was vetoed).
They are not socialist.
All of Mpls is very displeased about the Uber/Lyft ordinance.
The email includes, among other things, a claim that people with disabilities and visitors "will be left stranded," because apparently Uber/Lyft are the only transportation services in the city. Big if true.
I’m Catholic. Since being elected, I’ve always been able observe Easter and Christmas without having to worry.
It’s always accommodated and I never have to worry. It’s about being creative and doing the right thing.
Where there is a will, there is a way.
At today’s City Council Meeting, in the absence of three Muslim Council members who are observing Eid with their families, the Minneapolis City Council voted to stop the current process to allow Minneapolis residents to vote on a rent stabilization policy. 1/
We need to decriminalize being unhoused in Minneapolis. Today, MPD forcefully and aggressively evicted our community members in Ward 9. This violent act reinforces the dehumanization of our unhoused community and continues to displace some of our most vulnerable people. 1/2
We have a new variant that is infecting many people and the response is to send people back to work faster? No masks, no vaccine requirements, no emergency pay, and a huge disregard for human life.
Today I filed as your DFL-DSA-Labor endorsed candidate for the Mpls City Council 9th Ward!
Thank you to the community that I was born & raised in, the sacrifices my Mexican immigrant parents have made for me to be here today, & the trust you have given me to lead beside you.
Today is another heavy day in our City. The family of Amir Locke spoke today at City Hall. They made it clear we need transparency at every step. We need accountability and we need to change our broken policies.
We need a full ban on no-knock warrants now.
We shouldn’t be using public money to build new stadiums. I’d rather see investments in cultural corridors than subsidies for billionaires. We have a housing affordability crisis. I’d rather us use our city resources to support our neighbors most in need.
The opioid crisis has severely impacted people in East Phillips. I’m talking to neighbors in Little Earth about the work
@EllisonCampaign
has done to hold opioid companies accountable.
He delivered more than $300 million in settlements for education, prevention, and treatment.
Drivers licenses for all PASSED in Massachusetts and is the law! The Governor vetoed the measure and the legislature overrode it. Big win for immigrants ❤️
ELECTION DAY IS HERE! Polls are open until 8PM. 🗳️
Thank you for all the support Ward 9.
The ballot box is always an emotional time for me. It’s a reminder that I get to use my voice while many family members have never been able to vote.
I hope you’ll join me again.
We are a city that should welcome immigrants. You’ve probably seen many Latino immigrants selling fruit to try and make it by.
This sign is an unfortunate and frustrating response targeting our minority entrepreneurs. 1/
Party leaders will stay silent on this. And yet coming this November they will blame progressives for losing the “majority” that hasn’t stood up to its promises.
I’m glad members are speaking out!
No special session to address gun violence across the state.
No special session to address the achievement gap/school funding.
No special session to increase wages for workers.
But SURE let’s have special session to choke kids in schools.
More than 40% of
#mnleg
DFL members (44 between House and Senate combined) go on record opposing a special session to repeal a new law around physical restraint standards in schools.
The law approved this spring has led to a pullback of school resource officers in some places.
