Jason Chavez represents Ward 9 on the Minneapolis City Council. Chair of the Public Health and Safety Committee. And Chair of the Committee of the Whole.
I wish I did not have to celebrate human dignity, but here we are.
A judge ruled on Friday that homeless people’s stuff shouldn’t be destroyed when camps are evicted (regarding Minneapolis and Hennepin County violating constitutional rights in eviction sweeps of encampments).
These past two days make it clear that we need a Municipal Shoveling and Plowing Program with an emphasis on accessibility & elder care. It’s unacceptable that community members cannot get around safely. You have my commitment to use an equity lens when developing these programs.
At today’s City Council Meeting, in the absence of three Muslim Council members who are observing Eid with their families, the Minneapolis City Council voted to stop the current process to allow Minneapolis residents to vote on a rent stabilization policy. 1/
Under no circumstances should the City of Minneapolis rebuild its 3rd Precinct Police Station at the former Lake and Minnehaha location located in Ward 9. My constituents have made that very clear. We should never rebuild a police station at Lake and Minnehaha. 1/
Uber and Lyft pulled out all the stops to try & scare the Council into stopping this policy, but we are with the drivers because we believe in people over profits.
I’m proud to have worked with my colleague and drivers to get to this point.
We overrode the Mayor’s Veto (10-3).
Mayor Frey’s veto is a slap to the face of thousands of workers in MPLS.
As Council members, our job isn’t to count on pinky promises from multi billion-dollar corporations that they’ll do the right thing.
Our job is to make laws that guarantee workers can earn a living wage.
Community-My heart breaks. Another Black man was killed at the hands of the MPLS Police Department yesterday.
The BCA has taken over this case, and I urge full transparency from them, the MPD, and the SPPD. That includes the immediate release of the Body-camera footage. 1/3
Amir Locke was 22 years young. He should be alive today. His murder by MPD can & should have been preventable. I’m in the POGO committee & we are holding a no-knock warrant policy discussion at 1:30PM. The Mayor will be present to answer questions from the Mpls City Council. 1/2
On another day, this would have passed 7-6. The failure to accommodate our Muslim colleagues on a holy day is shameful. Council Members Chughtai & Osman listened to our City Workgroup to introduce a rent stabilization policy to be submitted to the voters at the Nov. election. 2/
We are at a breaking point in our city. Addressing homelessness must be a top priority.
Nearly 200 neighbors showed up to our Emergency Housing Meeting last night.
They are demanding tangible solutions from our City, County, State and Federal Government. 1/
Uber and Lyft workers in our community cannot wait. They have been pushing for wage increases and protection for a long time. I am disappointed to see the Governor veto this bill. 1/2
Residents and council members will have different opinions on rent control, but holding a critical vote during a major Muslim holiday is not something that should ever happen in this city. 3/
I just left the ongoing Camp Nenookaasi eviction today. A surprise eviction that is displacing a ton of people without a place to go.
The city’s approach is inhumane and does not reduce homelessness.
We are ready to take council action on a land transfer for a healing center.
CW: violence, discrimination, assault.
On Monday, a transgender woman was violently attacked at the Lake Street Light Rail Station. She was left with a broken rib, collapsed lung, & internal cranial bleeding. Please keep her, her family, and our community in your mind. 1/
Today marks one year since the Minneapolis Police Department shot and killed Amir Locke while he was wrapped in a blanket. The officers involved were not charged and walked away free. 1/3
My motion to close the chapter of rebuilding a police station or police functions at Lake and Minnehaha passed with a vote of 12-1 vote today.
It’s time to let community decide what happens here next. 1/
My residents in East Phillips never gave up. A nearly 10-year fight is basically over.
The City has accepted a $3.7 million guaranty as proof of payment for the purchase of the Roof Depot site from the community.
We fought and won.
I want to begin by saying that I am sorry. I’m sorry that our City Government has not done nearly enough to reform and structurally transform the Minneapolis Police Department. Today’s findings are not surprising. In fact, it’s what communities have been telling us all along. 1/
Corporate pressure is real. But the Minneapolis City Council voted against rescinding the rideshare minimum wage ordinance (10-3).
While refinements can still happen, it’s clear that we will not allow Uber and Lyft to exploit our Black, people of color, and immigrant drivers.
It has come to my attention that the City will not be extending contracts for Open Streets events for 2024 and is intending to end its partnership with Our Streets for those events.
I disagree with this decision and will be supportive of keeping our partnership with them. 1/
This morning, at the request of my Little Earth constituents and elders, I went to observe the eviction at the Wall of Forgotten Natives where more than 140+ people were staying at. 1/
Smith Foundry will be shutting down completely by August 15, 2024. This is a huge victory for East Phillips.
I’m proud of my residents for their commitment to clean air and water. Next up is getting the East Phillips Urban Farm project done.
Roof Depot Update: On Wednesday, I met with the Minneapolis Delegation of the House of Representatives, Minneapolis Public Works and community members from East Phillips regarding the future of the roof depot site. I have great news to share. 1/3
This is important info from the Immigrant Law Center of MN. If you’re not a U.S Citizen please be careful with marijuana usage.
Using, possessing, growing, and selling marijuana is still illegal under federal law. 1/
Native Lives Matter. Our diverse community matters. A nearly decade-long fight for environmental justice is coming to an end. An agreement struck at the State Legislature that will support the sale of the Roof Depot site for an East Phillips Indoor Urban Farm vision. 1/
Ricky Cobb II should be alive today. I am devastated after watching the body and squad cam footage. He was shot and senselessly killed by MN State Patrol Troopers.
How many more times can we allow for the color of someone’s skin to be seen as a weapon? 1/
Starting in 2026, the City is going to undertake a large project to make the intersection of 26th and Hiawatha much safer.
This location sees the second most crashes of any intersection in the city and the most crashes for bicycles in the city. 1/
Today, the Mayor’s Administration brought forward a recommendation to the Budget Committee that is set to defund community safety programs that were meant to support our residents. The proposal is to use these programs to fund the police union contract.
1/
During the uprising in 2020, the Coliseum Building was badly damaged along with many small businesses on the Lake Street corridor.
Today, on Juneteenth we get to celebrate some positive news for our community. The Grand Opening celebration of the Historic Coliseum Building. 1/
Over the last 2 days, I’ve been in constant communication with my East Phillips community. I have heard from so many community members in the wake of the arrests of Little Earth residents at the former Roof Depot site. The continued harm to my community must come to an end. 1/
Good morning! I’m at work early prepping for the Minneapolis City Council meeting.
It’s time to pass this Uber & Lyft Minimum Wage Ordinance.
I’m with my constituents who are demanding we close these loopholes, protect workers & hold billionaire corporations accountable.
The Minneapolis City Council passed our Minimum Wage Ordinance for Uber/Lyft drivers with a veto-proof majority (9-4).
Small businesses are required to pay minimum wages before tips & billion dollar out-of-state tech companies should be too.
@MplsWard2
@MplsWard6
Nenookaasi Healing Camp Update
This afternoon, Mayor Frey’s Administration carried out a mass displacement effort and eviction without adequate housing options for people. 1/
Stopping the policy process where Council members can work together to develop & form a policy is anti-democratic. Through the policy process, we as the Council would have produced a rent stabilization policy for Minneapolis voters to approve or reject in this Nov. election. 4/
I’m writing this devastating update regarding the future of the East Phillips Urban Farm and its uncertain future once again. While the community held its end of the bargain with the $3.7M cash escrow deposit, the State Legislature was unable to fulfill its pledge. 1/
It's time for the Minneapolis City Council to step up.
@MplsWard2
,
@JamalOsmanMN
, and I are moving forward on an ordinance this year on wage increases, workers’ rights and safety for our Uber and Lyft workers. 2/2
I don’t support the mass displacement and eviction of over one hundred overwhelmingly Indigenous residents of Nenookaasi Healing Camp (
@campnenookaasi
).
I emailed Mayor Frey and asked him to stop the eviction and to join us for a meeting to establish a Cultural Healing Center.
Bridges to glow light blue for Somali Independence Day!
At the request of council members Jason Chavez and Jamal Osman, both the I-35W and Lowry Ave Bridge will glow light blue tonight to mark Somali Independence Day.
Somali Independence Day is July 1, 2023.
The Minneapolis City Council stood with workers and passed a policy that will protect basic workers’ rights and dignified wages for thousands of Uber and Lyft drivers. This happened on a vote of 7-5.
We urge Mayor Frey to stand with workers and sign this ordinance into law. 1/
Yesterday evening, I brought Phillips residents near both Camp Nenookaasi’s and Camp Nenookaasi residents together for a meeting in English, Spanish and Somali at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Midtown Phillips. 1/
Last night, I was at the Lake Street Midtown Station w/Chief O’Hara where someone was shot. The victim is in critical condition. A suspect has been identified & no arrests have been made. I’m still triggered from hearing these gun shots & seeing this person drop to the ground. 1/
We did it! Our amendment to bring $700,000 in small business assistance to those most impacted in the last two years passed unanimously. I am especially proud that we brought this critical funding to E. Lake Street, 38th Street, West Broadway, and Cedar Ave. 1/2
On July 18, workers at Rainbow Health in Mpls were told by their Board that they were closing down immediately. This decision came days after a unanimous vote of No Confidence by the Workers represented by SEIU Healthcare MN & days after the CEO made the decision to resign. 1/
We are calling for an emergency housing for all meeting.
Join us on Sept. 12th at 6PM at the Phillips Community Center (2323 11th Ave S, Minneapolis, MN 55404).
Resources and priorities need to shift so we can support our unhoused neighbors and address homelessness.
Yesterday, I spoke with the Civil Rights Commission about our plan to overhaul the Minneapolis Civil Rights Ordinance.
Specifically, adding homeless status, immigration status, and justice impacted status as protected classes. 1/
FYI: Minneapolis is temporarily requiring a negative test or proof of vaccine at least 72 hours before entering stadiums, movie theaters, bowling alleys, convention centers, and other venues that serve food or drinks starting January 19, 2022. More to come.
Addressing climate change cannot wait. I support 24/7 bus lanes for Hennepin Ave & proud to support
@MplsWard10
staff direction.
It’s a climate & accessibility issue. The lack of drivers licenses for our undocumented immigrants only increases our need for transportation options.
Today was the first hearing in the Senate on the Driver’s Licenses for All bill that would restore the right to drive and finally let so many in our community live without fear.
Thank you to community for showing up and to
@SenatorZMohamed
for making sure we get this done!
Missing 4-year old girl named Romilda Garcia went missing today. She was last seen at 2PM on the 2500 Block of Cedar Ave South. She was wearing pink pajamas with white polka dots. She's Native American and Latina. She has dark curly hair. 1/
I’m frustrated to hear that Xcel Energy backed away from its commitment to equity by cutting their $9 million Resilient Minneapolis Project. These were projects that were negotiated with the city and ultimately approved by the Public Utilities Commission. 1/2
It’s time to permanently close the Smith Foundry and hold the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency accountable.
East Phillips residents are tired of being a sacrificial zone, an afterthought and a dumping ground for pollution. 1/
- we need the establishment of an encampment response policy.
- we need the development of a housing first policy.
- we need a South Minneapolis AVIVO village
- we need Overdose Prevention Centers in the city.
- we need to establish a navigation center.
- and a lot more. 4/
We now have a clear pathway to get this community vision accomplished. If the State Legislature prioritizes this, our community will finally be able to get this done. Our community continues to show its resilience. We are one step closer. 3/3
This morning, my council colleagues
@MplsWard1
@MplsWard10
presented several policy items regarding a humane encampment response. Unhoused residents deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. 1/4
In working with community & colleagues, I’m putting a notice of intent to suspend the Hiawatha Campus Expansion tomorrow at full council. This is a big step in achieving the East Phillips Indoor Urban Farm. The vote will take place on March 10, 2022 at the full council meeting.
In this meeting, Minneapolis Public Works expressed willingness to sell the roof depot site. Various news organizations just reported that Mayor Frey is willing to sell it as well. These are huge developments for the community. 2/3
Yesterday, I saw posts on social media regarding the significant amount of needle litter and trash around Lake and Hiawatha. I immediately connected with City Staff from the Health Department and Public Works. 1/3
My team is reserving the East Phillips Park Gym. We will call for an emergency meeting where unhoused neighbors, government officials, service providers & people on the ground can come together and come up with tangible solutions. Dollars, resources & priorities need to shift. 3/
The Phillips community is used to broken promises, which includes vowing to end homelessness in 5 years.
The vicious cycle of evicting people from block to block is ineffective, inhumane & a waste of taxpayer dollars. 1/
It’s abundantly clear that we as a City, County, State and Federal Government have failed our residents.
We have the resources to address this issue but we need the political will to move them into the things we know work. 2/
It's not normal. This has become a common occurrence at this station. It’s led to our students at South High not even feeling safe to take the light rail. Our transportation system should be safe for everyone and, quite frankly, it’s not. 2/
This also happened during a clean up event of lake street that I planned with city staff who care about our neighborhoods.
I am disheartened about the trust that was broken across our community today and with my office. 12/
First mental health workers strike in Minnesota! Proud to join my union siblings at Abbott this morning in the 9th Ward. Join the journey for a living wage and workplace safety.
@SEIUHCMNIA
Happy first day of Budget Committee Markup! Congratulations Council Member
@MplsWard12
on your first official meeting.
We are passing budget amendments that will make Minneapolis a better place.
See you back on the dais at 2:30PM.
This morning, the Minneapolis City Council voted on Council Leadership, Committee Leadership, and appointments to committees.
I’m proud to be the next Chair of the Public Health & Safety Committee.
And the next Chair of the Committee of the Whole. 1/
Tune into the Climate and Infrastructure Committee this Thursday at 1:30PM to hear from community members on the proposed Southside Greenway project.
A proposed bicycle and pedestrian corridor connecting 12 parks and trails in Minneapolis. 1/
In the last 5 years, the number of asylum cases originating from Ecuador in MN’s immigration system has increased by 900%.
I’m bringing forward a resolution tomorrow calling our federal officials to designate Ecuador for Temporary Protected Status. 1/
Standing in solidarity with
@mnnurses
who just put their 10-day notice of intent to strike.
Hospital CEO’s need to bargain in good faith and come to a deal. This includes Abbott Northwestern Hospital and Children’s Minneapolis in Ward 9.
Great new! This morning we broke ground on the METRO B Line. Planned to open in 2024.
This will bring bus rapid transit stations & more to the Lake street corridor. This is a major investment in transit equity that will improve the ridership experience for Route 21 riders. 🚌
The
@MplsHealthDept
just let me know that the biohazard vendor collected over 300 needles and two 5-gallon pails of needle debris from the location of the sweep. I’m incredibly thankful to our staff who took quick action! 2//3
Devastated by the increased gun violence and mass shootings in South Minneapolis. Families should never have to worry about their loved ones making it home safe. 1/
These inhumane evictions with no plans, unclear guidelines on timing and a lack of proper notices are wrong.
They had nothing to do with my community meeting last night and nothing to do with St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Our meeting had hopeful and it brought people together. 9/
Thank you, Ward 9 for sending me back to City Hall.
We are starting the new year with our inauguration for the 2024-2025 term.
My office will continue to lead with a community-led, community centered vision for our residents.
In community with
@UnRestrictMN
and organizers advocating for reproductive freedom and rights.
I’m committed to using my local level position to take action and pass policies.
Camp Nenookaasi Update!
50+ people lost their shelter and belongings, and the neighboring
residents' homes were damaged from the fire.
I will keep pushing for transparency in this case. Whether this was an accident or arson, our community needs answers.
Many community members are hearing about a potential shooting involving a police officer around 34th & Hiawatha.
We are going to work to get as much information as possible to ensure transparency.
Since starting my first term in January 2022, my office has been working with residents, small businesses, Lake Street Greenway Partnership, and community members on establishing a Lake Street Community Safety Center. 1/
Missing 4-year old girl named Romilda Garcia went missing today. She was last seen at 2PM on the 2500 Block of Cedar Ave South. She was wearing pink pajamas with white polka dots. She's Native American and Latina. She has dark curly hair. 1/
Today, at Full Council, I announced that my office & CM
@MplsWard10
are bringing forward a Legislative Directive on the MPLS subminimum wage for people w/disabilities. It will consider & anticipate the possible phase-out of the subminimum wage in the City of MPLS by 2024. 1/2
Our dream is far from over. I’ll keep you all updated on the pathway forward.
But we will not give up. And please know that your South Minneapolis elected officials are committed to figuring this out.
Sincerely,
Jason Chavez
7/
Our Uber and Lyft drivers achieved a big victory today!
The Fair Drives, Safe Rides ordinance passed in the BIHZ Committee 5-0.
This will come to a final vote of the Full Council on August 17, 2023.
@MplsWard2
@MplsWard6
I will keep everyone updated. I am sorry that this is how things turned out especially after a productive meeting last night. This action will lead to more distrust in our city government especially with the meeting we had yesterday and this stunt being pulled today. 11/
I was able to spend my day on a ride along with our Behavioral Crisis Response Team. They are calm, dedicated, and responsive.
It’s clear that we need to expand our alternative responses to ensure we can send the right response to the right 911 call.
I love you East Phillips. You’ve never backed down.
We are one step closer. The vision we all dreamed about will soon become reality.
Thank you to all the neighbors who never gave up and for the continuous work from
@epni_urbanfarm
.
Let’s get this across the finish line.
Big News: The Minneapolis City Council unanimously approved the purchase agreement for the Roof Depot site today. 🌱🦋
So much gratitude to everyone continuing to show up and shout out to the negotiating team.
We'll post more next steps soon!
The mass accumulation of debris, overdoses, open drug use, deteriorating infrastructure, and lack of resources are some of the other issues we see at this station. South Minneapolis residents deserve better. 3/
