Surgical resident
@GeisingerSurgEd
. Aspiring endocrine surgeon. Passionate about clinical research and innovation 🤓 Potcake mom 🐶 humor is my coping mechanism
I will stand outside for more than three hours in scrubs and a white coat in 95 degree weather to support gun reform. What are you willing to do to prevent another firearm related death?
@ALMannixMD
I give you the Dunning-Kruger effect. Doing well in medical school lands you atop mount stupid only to hit the valley of despair during residency and slowly build up your fund of knowledge until you are an expert at your craft. He will learn (hopefully) but it will take time.
@arghavan_salles
I can’t find a single reason to stop wearing a mask but countless benefits to continued masking. I’m not sure why this is even a question when the answer seems so obvious
My friends may make fun of me but I’m really excited about the new ergonomic loupes. I can see the operative field while looking straight ahead. I think (hope?) my c spine will thank me in the future 🤓
@nursekelsey
I had a high school classmate reach out to me to learn about the covid vaccine. I provided him with information (including some from a lecture by
@PeterHotez
) and he seemed willing in the end to get vaccinated. That felt like an accomplishment
@NBedera
I am a surgical resident and I have undergone a lumbar puncture and about a dozen colonoscopies. Getting an IUD has been my most painful and traumatic medical experience. We as a profession do not take female pain seriously enough. I will spend my career working to fix this.
Living in Houston has provided so many wonderful learning opportunities. I will always be grateful that I got to learn about aortic repair from Dr. Hazim Safi (that card will be on my desk forever).
@dch1309
This is not a safe solution. Pay nurses better. Promote safe nurse:patient ratios. Offer bonuses to stay (most facilities offer signing bonuses but do not prioritize retention). Because I do not know a single medical student or doctor who could manage this:
@AshleyGWinter
I believe the term you are looking for is “voluntold”. I use it daily. As a surgical resident I am regularly voluntold that I will be doing something.
@whereinmyworld
I have found that owning a dog is a great way to meet people. You have to take him/her out for walks and having a dog with you makes you approachable. I have also made a lot of friends at the dog park 😊
@callie_mt
The fact that I spend way more time than I’d like to admit worried about how I am being perceived. I have asked male co-residents about this and their response is usually “I don’t care what anyone thinks about me” (and I think they mean it?!)
Congratulations to my mentor/friend/family
@maraantonoff
! I will never understand how you do it all but I’m so grateful to have you as source of wisdom and guidance as I learn how to become a surgeon ❤️
@AdairaLandryMD
Trauma surgery: No ladders, wear a seatbelt. Onc: get your colonoscopy and mammogram as indicated, don’t smoke. Colorectal: say yes to fiber.
@JJcolemanMD
My mom was a nephrologist and dad an emergency medicine doctor. My sister chose to go into cardiology and I am a surgical resident (though our mother definitely encouraged us to explore things outside of medicine). They are still my role models.
I’m wearing a mask on a plane because my first stop when I get off is
@MassGeneralNews
to see my mom (who requires oxygen at baseline). Be kind to others, we all have our reasons.
And she has played an enormous role in my life! I always had a family to spend holidays with in Texas and have been so lucky to be mentored and sponsored by this incredible woman. We should all strive to do a fraction of the things that
@maraantonoff
does!
I am a CT surgeon, and I’m privileged to play an enormous role in the lives of all four of my children as well as those of my patients and their families. To be clear, women are wanted, needed, and can succeed in CTSurgery.
I invited my parents to a zoom meeting at 9pm on a Friday night to show them a new project I have been working on (and practice a presentation for next week)🤓They deserve a medal for putting up with 31 years of endless enthusiasm.
I have been so privileged to learn from
@maraantonoff
over the past two years. Grateful that she realizes she is stuck with me for life now (and that she finds time to have dinner with me after a long day in clinic!)❤️

My research mentor Jon Tyson finds time to go walking with me every Saturday morning. We discuss healthcare, politics, research and life. It is regularly the highlight of my week.

I see that individual is a thoracic surgeon. Perhaps they should check this out:
1:4 trainees wish they had not chosen the field with 60% feeling burnout regularly. Maybe it’s time for things to change for the better 🤷🏻♀️
I entered surgery because it is a field that offers the opportunity for learning and growth throughout a career.
@PSugarbaker
is without a doubt an expert at his craft, but even at this stage, there is still room for improvement (specifically related to implicit bias).
@IEMcElroy
I just don’t understand how someone came up with this research idea, how they reached the conclusions they did based on the data available and HOW IT ENDED UP IN A PEER REVIEWED JOURNAL. I’m new to this academic life but sometimes it still baffles me
My loupes are in!! I will be on ENT next month so I can see how thyroidectomies go with these
@Designs4Vision
@TheAAES
. Ps this tweet was made while looking through loupes 🤓
My ergonomics obsessed self cannot wait to try these! I’m hoping it will feel like having the ergonomic mat on my feet. Camo inspired by central PA

I am participating in the

curriculum on performing peer reviews a recurring theme is that reviewers do not get training in how to provide feedback and editors should be more involved in weeding out unhelpful/inaccurate criticism by reviewers. This is a good example
@jtrebach
It does if you went to a medical school associated with
@YUNews
. Communities who will not eat pork also will not take heparin, was part of our cultural competency training.
To my mom:
@EileenFeldman8
. Thank you for being my best friend and biggest supporter. You are the embodiment of resilience. I love you to the moon and back. Happy Mother’s Day.❤️
@BrooketheOstomy
Never had one in my bedroom, always in the living room. I also really can’t understand people that sleep with the tv on like how is that even possible?!
A patient recently told me that I was doing a good job. The sincere compliment nearly brought me to tears. As a resident it pretty rare to receive positive feedback. So to my fellow residents out there who need to hear it: you’re doing a good job 🤗
I know that surgery can be an intimidating rotation for medical students. We work really hard
@GeisingerSurgEd
to make students feel welcome and many residents love having the opportunity to teach. Really happy to see that one of our MS3s had a positive experience. ❤️
@kalthegal_
@ALMannixMD
Oh I was the mayor of there in medical school and even when I started residency. I think one just has to try to minimize the number of stupid things you say/people you offend while you’re up there. I think this guy will regret talking to an attending the way he did.
Always appreciate the learning opportunity provided by
@WomenSurgeons
reviewer academy. Thankful to have the chance to collaborate with such incredible women.
Anyone else in medicine treat July 1st as a new year (instead of January) and set goals? I would like to eat more veggies (joined a csa to support a local farm ✅), exercise more and stick to a study schedule. What are your goals for your next pgy year?
@realQrampage
I am getting a MSc in clinical trial design to fill in the gaps in my knowledge. I do wish I had come out of Med school better able to critically review journal articles/research studies. Curriculum could use some updates.
Just wanted to thank the nurses
@MassGeneralNews
for taking such wonderful care of my mom. Your kindness, compassion and skilled care help me believe recovery will be possible. She is in great hands. Thank you ❤️
@IEMcElroy
The only thing that comes in a universally agreed upon form of “mild” is salsa. Unless someone feels like making a viral illness symptom scale and publishing it in a peer reviewed journal. 🤓

Greetings from general surgery resident. I’ve learned people don’t like when we tell them all the gross things we do at work. Especially my mom. Especially when she is eating dinner.
@JasonHanMD
I have only ever seen OR gowns in L or XL, do they even make smaller sizes? Endoscope is challenging to use for folks with small hands. My Med school used to have different white coats for men and women and the men’s had larger pockets.
The Med student on my service today asked me what compression socks I like. She clearly had not heard about my scientifically sound N of 1

I think individual achievement is emphasized in medical school/ resident selection while teamwork is essential to thriving in residency and our healthcare system requires you to play well with others. I agree we do not do a good enough job evaluating for these attributes.
Always learning new things at this job
@MDAndersonNews
. Grateful to work in an environment that encourages innovation and provides mentorship to make it happen.
Armed with lots of literature on the topic of gun violence. Spoiler alert: public health experts have laid out a comprehensive list of solutions, none of which involve arming teachers or single entry points at schools. Sorrynotsorry

Designs for vision. It’s also great because you can try them for six months and if you don’t love the new style you can use the money you spent on them to get the regular style of loupes. I didn’t really see a downside to trying
People have gone more than 24 hours without electricity in freezing temperatures. Please do your best to stay safe. Check that your heat source will not emit carbon monoxide. Praying for Houston
#houstonblackout
SPREAD THE WORD: The number of people being admitted to local hospitals for carbon monoxide poisoning is rising at a disturbing rate. Do NOT bring any outdoor appliances (grills, etc.) inside, or run your car inside the garage. Stay safe.
Our healthcare system is flawed. Our legal system is broken. Today I feel truly disheartened. To those who continue to strive to make these systems better, more equitable and more just: thank you for allowing me to hope that tomorrow might be better.
None of this would have been possible without

In these politically divisive times, can’t we all just agree that darkness at 4pm is miserable?! It’s 2022, time to make daylight savings time permanent in the US.
