Between 1927 and 1986, there were only 14 reported incidents of blasphemy in Pakistan. Between 1986 and 2010, that number rose to 1274. Did society become more blasphemous? No. The law just made it easier to settle scores with false accusations. Junaid Hafeez must be freed now.

A gentle reminder that this was the Pakistan of the 0.001%. This cosmopolitan 'liberalism' existed amidst grinding poverty, authoritarian rule, the persecution of ethnic and religious minorities, and domination by a small, insouciant elite.

I wonder of the government will be as enthusiastic about recovering 'looted wealth' from former generals named in the Credit Suisse leaks as it is when it comes to its political opponents.

7. We found that 'dynastic' politicians dominated electoral competition in Punjab; they were more likely to win elections than non-dynastic candidates, and many electoral contests were simply competitions between rival dynastic families.

If we want to know why Pakistan is an utter failure as a nation, we ought to study how the junta treated East Pakistan. The junta was enabled by the bureaucracy, business groups & educated elite. This small clique exploited the East’s resources & denied its people representation.

The 'new Italian leader' is literally a fascist, so Dr. Mazari's admiration for her makes complete sense.

Interesting statement by the new Italian leader on French President Macron. This is democracy & this is defending your own nation first.

Have seen a few tweets wondering what Pakistan needs to do to be a 'global player'. Tbh, wouldn't it be enough to be a reasonably prosperous, low key, mostly unremarkable country that does a good job of looking after its citizens? Like a very large Lithuania or something...

14. The other parties are no different. 75% of the PML-N's legislators in the Punjab Assembly were dynastic politicians. Nearly, if not all, of the PPP's members were dynastic, and the same is also true of the PML-Q.

8. What is a 'dynastic' politician? For our paper, we defined dynastic politicians as those who had close family members - parents, grandparents, siblings, and children - who had competed in provincial and national elections since 1970.

10. More importantly, the overwhelming majority of these dynastic politicians belong to the rich, propertied classes. They are landlords and industrialists (sometimes both), and use their political power to secure their interests as a class.

At this critical time for Pakistani startups, a gentle reminder that you're not allowed to have an opinion on General Musharraf's 1999 coup unless you yourself have ever forcibly seized control of a nuclear-armed nation of 200 million people.

Forgive me if I am skeptical of your anti-imperialism/anti-military posturing. Until recently, you were perfectly happy to cheer for the Establishment when it crushed dissent and persecuted opponents in Balochistan, KP, and elsewhere.

Your blood should boil when you read this. Damn the the insouciant ruling class that has forced Pakistanis to flee, and damn prosperous, civilized, liberal Europe that has nothing but contempt and hatred for the victims of its wars and imperial plunder.

9. Dynastic politicians are found in all the mainstream parties. They constitute the bulk of the 'electables' who tend to be awarded party tickets, and possess local vote banks held together over generations through a combination of economic power, status, and patronage.
