Dear junior doctors. Strike hard. Strike now. I am ready to do some first on consultant on calls. I will maybe even bring you cake. If you succeed we succeed, the future succeeds. Currently I’m scared if there will be anyone to take care of me when I’m sick.
I’d rather re learn the Krebs Cycle and the clotting cascade whilst knitting the Brachial plexus one nerve at a time than try and continue to understand the car crash that is the NHS Pension.
The NHS is a health service. Not a battlefield. Not a war. It’s a work place. People are workers, employees, there to help patients. This obsession with war and war terminology is weird.
Junior doctors need industrial action and to do it properly. Need to learn lessons from previously- one voice, it’s not a popularity contest, we know what the headlines will say, but it’s about fairness and restoration. Get it done.
Just going to say. I did not renew my RCR membership. Must say though, I’ve loved the almost threatening messages that I shan’t be allowed to put FRCR after my name because of this.
Working out which browser is old enough that it will launch ICE, which one is new enough for nhsmail and which PC is the one that takes 37 minutes to switch on and this is before we get to the passwords.
If you don’t like the CT diagnosis, don’t request it. I’m happy for people to ask questions and glad some review images, I’m not about to change my report because you don’t like what it says though.
‘Enjoy sitting in a dark room the rest of your life’ as I got up to walk out of my CT2 surgical ARCP ‘waste of space’ was muttered under their breath. I actually laughed and then hugged my pal as I left the room.
in the spirit of toxic work environments:
what's the best/worst insult you've received at work?
being called a "waste of a training number" by someone more junior than me is my current top hit
The replies to this saying consultant should just go buy one is exactly why we will never get anywhere with better pay or conditions. People love working for free or even paying for their own work tools. Fantastic!
On exec today, just heard a story of a consultant who needed a desk diary for £7.50. Went through 7 managers and ended up at exec level. Request sent back saying please use IT system if not resubmit. And we wonder why the NHS is broken?
Guys. Dad is coming tomorrow to inspect the building work and progress and I am nervous for the builders. 36 years and I’m not sure I’ve managed to gain this man’s approval, the builders have no chance.
Australian Government literally driving an advert to picket lines- better pay, better lifestyle, not treated like children. Forget the NHS there will be no doctors left to look after us when we’re sick. Consultants next.
I’m on call this weekend. Just wanted everyone to know. I really wish people would stop climbing ladders and drinking on balconies. Everyone is doing sober Euros right lads? RIGHT?
Now we all know there’s no Pride in surgery without Radiology. How you going to get anywhere without the rays sis? We are radiology, we are the darkness. Welcome.
Welcome everyone! 🖤🤎❤️🧡💛💚💙💜

Joy is the smell of opening the customary repurposed yoghurt tub and getting the hit of mum’s home roasted and mixed Garam Masala. Running low because haven’t seen her since last summer 😩
Every time someone refers to another human being working alongside them in the NHS by their agenda for change banding, a little bit of me dies inside.
Why do we do this?!
@mevparekh
Some radiographers managed to convince more than one junior in A&E that the machine had run out of X-rays and more stock wouldn’t be delivered until tomorrow.
Yet again, I sometimes feel my greatest achievement since becoming a consultant is learning to write the email reply and then send it to a friend instead or just delete it.
We are so institutionalised in the NHS we just submit to the craziest things. As if all staff shouldn’t be encouraged to stay hydrated throughout their shifts.
I’ve previously had water bottles and travel mugs confiscated. It’s ridiculous; a well-hydrated doctor is highly likely to be happier and more effective!
I hate to say this, but, especially at work, sometimes it’s easier, quicker and less confusing if you just pick up the phone instead of sending that 17th email….
I’m the director of a breast service across multiple sites and manage staff and business cases and projects and new services but there’s no greater sense of achievement than helping relatives with their new phones, smart devices and tablets.
Parking up at work on a Monday. The early people, some are eating breakfast in their car, some sleeping, some just sobbing quietly in their bubble before having to leave and get to work super early.
Visiting parents in Sussex. My 7years younger than me brother has just had a baby and I think it’s hitting mum that I’m not going to be providing her grandchildren. It’s a happy somber time.
Something has happened. The abuse frontline staff are getting seems to now be a daily occurrence. Everyone seems really angry and are taking it out on us?
I’m a proper radiologist now because I call up house officers and ask questions like NOAC/DOAC/CEFTIZIMAB- wossat buddy? I also balance it with ‘did you talk to the patient tho?’
I’ll say it again. I’ve done my done my time as a Reg. First on as a consultant is not the one. I was promised some respite, relief, a rest, I am tired. I am old.
The pandemic made consultants realise there’s more to life than just working yourself into an early grave, also made us realise you can die doing your job and ‘the nhs’ doesn’t care world keeps turning.
Guys. About to start the final leg of trip. Tiny courtesy car is packed to bursting, does this last 100 miles need to be Xmas songs (going to assume you all vote no). Next stop- the one, the only, the haven’t seen him for 3 months- pooch.
So everyone at work thinks I stopped baking since I became a consultant because I was just trying to get the job. Please, I stopped baking because it’s 19:30 and I’m doing emails- these people would have given me a job without baked goods.
I’m sorry but I have to confess emoji reactions to outlook emails is something I’m now on board with. Means- I’ve seen what you’ve said and can react with one click and don’t have to reply to you and fill your inbox unnecessarily. Entering my boomer age.
If I had to click through all of the pop ups which you’re attacked by in a patient’s electronic record all day long I would lose my mind. Sorry juniors it must be the absolute worst.
Reality is we can already see many responding to the bait and forgetting that social media is not changing anyone’s mind or reaching those who need to hear it. Stop engaging and giving people chance to pile on. Wasted effort.
House renovation is at the stage where there’s just bits of plaster INSIDE my bed and I’m just like, meh and go to sleep. I also need people to either stop asking me how I am or that ‘it’ll be worth it in the end’.
Back to the flat, couldn’t face saying bye to pooch so just got in car. I also think I’ve found the balance of not offending people too much, whilst not letting them spout bigoted ignorant crap. Merry Christmas.
Just want to announce that on Sunday my pooch returns from his 8 month holiday to us and I will never ever ever go through such separation from him again.
@mevparekh
When on weekend on call I go and sit at the workstation reg is on so they can actually leave that physical space and know someone’s taking the calls otherwise it’s just pointless. Do radiologist’s need proph LMWH Mehul? Lemme bleep the med reg and ask.
Just been informed how much this stuff I randomly apply to my face at the wrong times and in the wrong order actually costs and let me tell you folks, the price is ridiculous and I look mega haggard. Get yourself some Nivea.
The replies highlight how no one cares. Also, you make a mistake they’ll say why did you see more than was safe? I beg people, do the work you’re paid for, that’s agreed as safe and stop. No one will fix a system which is being propped up by all this goodwill.
Would you find it acceptable if a pilot taking you on holiday had done twice the number of safe flying hours that day?
Today I did 49 GP consultations. The safe limit is 25.
GP is unsafe, GPs are leaving & it’s no wonder.

Naturally, what we want are our anaesthetic trainees to be right now is extremely stressed and powerless with NHS bureaucracy because they don’t have anything else to be doing.
Real men don’t push a pram with two hands REAL men stand abreast of it and use one hand only. ALPHA men thrust it forward and do interval sprints to catch up with it. All in my upcoming book- how men ruin things.
Why oh why will doctors never get paid their worth, given decent working conditions or negotiate a decent contract and pension? Well, if you think you’re not worth your training and expertise, and should spend your time doing work 100 others can do, you’ve already lost.
I am so done with this house renovation. I swear once it’s done I’m just going to live there and work remotely. Someone get me a Da-Vinci do the ultrasounds and I’m sorted. You want to see me? Come to this ridiculous house.
We are proud to release a 100 micron MRI scan of the human brain. Preprint on . Videos on . Dataset will be available in native space and MNI space at and integrated into . [1/2]
Unsurprising that Sandwell still has high rates of COVID given the volume of people who are driving around. Everything is closed- where’s everyone going?
Anyone I talk to at this conference basically laughs at me re BREXIT. ‘Who’s your PM right now?’....
Everyone is laughing at us guys. In case you weren’t sure- EVEN the radiologists. Sort it out.
Well look at that doctors, seems you don’t need to discuss this for ages, protest, ‘raise awareness’, get media attention. Your members know what’s happening, either they’re on board or they’re not.
NEW Royal College of Nurses announce ballot for strike action after emergency session following new pay settlement. It had pushed for double digit pay rise.
