✅ Inaugural Day of Inclusion
After the keynote presentations, attendees were encouraged to engage in dialogue about DEI through workshops, discussions, and presentations from various

The day ended with a dinner and raffle giveaway!
Although grad school has low points... The support I felt from faculty and staff this week was staggering. Throughout my third year meeting and the DOE review, I was 🫶🥹! THANK YOU
So much news yesterday! My first grad pub will be on the COVER of JCP... I was rejected by a fellowship, received an award, my mentee passed candidacy, and our TEM repair started 😅🥳
I am honored to have been a co-recipient of this award, and I'm so grateful that the KNI and Caltech have programs like these supporting student-driven efforts! 🙏💙
The KNI Catalyst Award recognizes changemakers for diversity, equity and inclusion in STEM.
Congratulations to this year's recipients Levi Palmer & Prachi Thureja for their contributions to building more supportive networks at

& beyond!
Our perspective is online! We describe how steady-state and ultrafast electron energy-loss spectroscopy can probe (and even image) vibrational and electronic dynamics at the nanoscale! 🔬

The Argonne scientist and my lab mate kept our experiments running while I went to gay bars and brunch this weekend in Chicago🥹🙏! Active ALLYship ppl 😂!!!

$1 MIL!! 🤑 I'm proud to have helped Scott write this grant for a revolutionary ultrafast, all-electron experiment! So excited to start building this instrument alongside our great team and to study some evasive electronic processes!

Prof. Scott Cushing has received a $1.1 million grant from the W. M. Keck Foundation to build a new type of all-electron instrument for measuring processes that happen on a femtosecond timescale (a millionth of a billionth of a second).
@UiisesPerez
Wow, Ulises... I'm so sorry... this is so disappointing. Hopefully you can contest this insensitive, racist comment. I'm trying to search for that option, but maybe it would be in your application portal? I hope grad school is going okay (outside of this)
I spent DAYS making my first PhD research poster 😮💨😅! Attend the virtual poster session next Thursday (Nov. 3rd) to see my progress modeling plasmon-induced carriers in TiO2!!

Academic reality 🙃! Yes, I'm expensive (Caltech pays $45k). And yes, for those confused, we do make "that much" lol
What do you get paid
@pauldauenhauer
? I'm curious 😅...
How much does a graduate student cost per year?
Salary: $35,793
Benefits + Tuition: $26,463
Supplies: $12,000
Travel: $3,000
Overhead: $42,491
Total: $119,747
I'm so proud of our team for making this $700 undergrad travel award happen! Please reach out to me if you or your students have questions! Thanks to
@CaltechCCE
DEI again for sponsorship 🙏💸💙!

At ACS this spring in Indianapolis I'm giving a poster (twice), a talk, organizing a symposium, and coordinating undergrads traveling to the meeting... why lol
I finally connected with so many friends last week thanks to
@LiSA_Hub_DOE
! I also can't believe how many PIs and role models I met in person – at poster sessions, breakfast, on the beach, etc. 🥹🤩 I was star-struck!

Last week, we celebrated our researchers and their amazing accomplishments this year, and we planned our steps moving into 2023! Thanks for the great reunion in Asilomar 🧡❤️💛

This renovation is drastically needed. I spent years working with class/lab mates on hallway floors to write lab reports. Several of my friends switched majors and colleges because of this experience in

We are implementing DEI moments in Caltech chemistry (1-5 minutes on DEI before research talks). Most faculty support them, but there is underground resistance from some (including assistant) profs?
California bathroom codes only cater to "male" and "female" users... so we can't get a non-gendered restroom within five floors of our lab. Sound like a problem???

PhD in the US costs around $100k/yr in taxpayer (e.g.
@NSF
) or other grant money that the faculty must raise. At Stanford, an experimental PhD student is about $140k/yr. Theory students (no lab, only coffee) are $116k/yr. A 5-year PhD is well over $0.5M!
