I've just updated negatively about how useful the May report of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services will be. We might be getting hundreds of pages on framing the problem instead of valuing or solving it.

IDF denies using white phosphorus, but we at @amnesty verified images of Israeli forces on October 9 near Sderot with artillery shells labelled D528 - the US Department of Defense Identification Code for white phosphorus-based rounds. From Sderot, northern Gaza is within range.

But Israel's presence in the West Bank (or in Gaza until 2005) cannot be disconnected from key historical facts that make the comparison to N Ireland a very poor comparison: 4/

The civilian death toll in Gaza, as tragic as it is, is a direct result of choices made by Hamas to maximize their civilian death toll. Focusing on the civilian death toll effectively makes the use of civilians as human shields an invincible strategy. /15

Turns out that a small amount of information at the right time can be quite meaningful when trying to reduce damages from floods. @RyanMKellogg summarizes Seunghoon Lee's (Harris JMC) work in the below thread

A quick thread to highlight a @HarrisPolicy student on the environmental econ job market this year: Seunghoon Lee. Seunghoon studies whether simple information policies can help induce people to not live in floodplains, or at least protect themselves if they do live there.

@paulnovosad @DuduLagziel I don't think that a permanent occupation is the end goal, but a temporary one will likely be needed. After that, there are talks about either the Fatah (the faction that is in control of the West Bank) resuming control of Gaza (they were removed in a coup in 2007).

@crampell covered many important angles of this question through the lens of the decline in bat levels in North America, and managed to bring in some much needed humor to all of this. I chime in about why we should attempt to value nature, and what my research finds on bats

@anantsudarshan @paulnovosad The original point was whether Hamas has the incentive to increase, and even maximize, civilian casualties in Gaza. The point you're making now is about whether the use of human shields is an invincible strategy, one that offers Hamas impunity. Israel chooses to defend itself.

This is where environmental economists can contribute so much to the discussion. We have tools that enable us to learn about these complex interactions, and there are all these quasi-experimental variations and outcomes out there waiting to be connected. (14/17)

I think this is a real challenge. In many ways, I see the academic literature on biodiversity losses where the climate change literature was 10-20 years ago. Scientists were ringing all the alarm bells, but it was difficult to map climate change to well-measured effects. (12/17)

Extremely painful how accurate this is. This is why it is so important that Gantz and Eizenkot effectively formed a separate war cabinet with Netanyahu and Gallant. It would have been even better if they had listened to Lapid and kicked out the most extremists out of the gov.

Looking to design policies to address biodiversity losses? You need to first make sense of how to quantify biodiversity, measuring species. But surprise: "biologists have never reached agreement over what constitutes a species" 1/8
