Jaguars once roamed the southwestern U.S., but habitat loss and government predator control programs drove them out. A pair of jaguars were recently been spotted in Arizona-their future here depends on the right incentives. In #Mexico, ranchers celebrate jaguar sightings because the nonprofit Northern Jaguar Project rewards them for recovering the species. In the U.S., the #EndangeredSpeciesAct imposes strict land-use restrictions, making jaguars a liability instead of an asset. One survey found Arizona ranchers fear these regulations more than the #jaguars themselves. To truly recover species, we need policies that reward #conservation instead of punishing landowners for it. #Wildlife thrives when people have a reason to protect it.
