Dear
@LawMcGill
students,
I just want you to know that your professors at the Faculty of Law are very proud of you and think that you *are* capable of reading.
❤️✊❤️✊
Hey
@umcgill
last I checked universities can't press charges. That's not what they do, nor what they are entitled to do, however so much they may wish to do it.
Wait,
@mcgillu
is arguing that every professor whose class has a TA is a “manager” and therefore excluded from labour relation’s legislation?
This is a serious position taken on the advise of a real labour lawyer?
Or am I misreading this?

Look I’m no fancy administrator but I wouldn’t make fun of my own law school just because the students wanted me to bargain with their profs to avoid a strike.
And we are so grateful to the CAUT DF colleagues who joined us on the line yesterday, and who are coming again to join us on Friday, May 3!
#solidarity
We are thrilled beyond words to receive $1,000,000 from the CAUT Defence Fund to support our strike and efforts to conclude a fair collective agreement that will serve as a model for Education, Arts and others,
We're at the Labour Tribunal tmw to get included in our bargaining unit vulnerable "Special Category" Assistant Profs (profs hired on condition of finishing doctorates in a year) and joint appointees, as is standard in QC. Our uni is litigating fruitlessly to keep them out.
Thinking about all of the amazing academic labour organizing happening right now, and I am reminded of a story involving my uni, a union drive, and *Norma Rae*. A quick and funny/enraging 🧵
Thanks Nathan. We go before the Tribunal Administratif du Travail to seek certification this Thursday. McGill is contesting, putting Provost Manfredi on the stand for the first day of hearing to try to defeat our effort at organization.
The majority of professors in the McGill Faculty of Law have now voted to form an association to be seeking certification as a union |

In addition to the severe legal infirmity of asking profs to scab on their TAs,
@umcgill
's instruction that they do so is shameful bullying. C'mon
@umcgill
, give our TAs a living wage and healthcare. Bring us together for the bigger struggles that lie ahead.

@TIPS_SPIIE
There is some misinformation out there. We did NOT accept June 7 when proposed in April because it was a ludicrously distant date from April 23, our last bargaining day. We have called on McGill to bargain NOW, evenings and weekends if necessary, as our conciliator has offered.
While the Canadian university average to reach a collective agreement is 265 days, Fabrice Labeau of
@mcgillu
has delayed and delayed so much that we are over 500 days. We could have an agreement in days if only Fabrice met with us. What is he afraid of? A fair deal?
With serious external enemies attacking universities it is shameful that
@McGillPresident
and
@ProvostManfredi
continue to pursue whithering, toxic and fruitless litigation against professors unionizing in Education, Arts and Law.
AMPE in court again this week--4 days of hearings at the labour tribunal. (
@McGillu
, despite having already lost to our colleagues in Law, is challenging our existence.) Colossal waste of time and resources. We will win, and we won't forget McGill admin's obstructionism later.
This might be a good time to say that while I'm the first person in my family to ever start or obtain a doctorate, I'm not the first person involved in union work by far--my dad was a Teamster and even testified in Congress!
Scholarship + labour has always been important to me.
Elections for our Executive are complete! Congratulations and thank you to:

TAs strike on Monday. The administration is ordering professors to scab on our students. In this letter to colleagues, I lay out why this would be to the detriment of our students, our university, and our profession.

Also, McGill is hosting the CLSA and Congress of the Federation of Humanities and Social Science. The CLSA has already said it will pull its conference from McGill if we do not have an agreement soon. Others are following suit.
Excluding McGill law profs and academics unwilling to cross a picket line would seem a fairly significant breach of the Federation’s obligations under its contracts.
When I first reached out to colleagues from
@Pol_droit_UQAM
about the possibility of changing venue of

That is,
@mcgillu
's line on vax passports for libraries is that there are alternative means to in-person library use. There are also alternative means to in-person teaching.
The incoherence of university's position is astounding. Same logic about online access in library applies to courses. We are seeing cowardice & self-preservation as motivating factors in an admin run amok. Time to clean house at the top to restore trust.
Delighted to be part of a symposium on Hanoch Dagan and Avihay Dorfman's ground-breaking piece, "Interpersonal Human Rights." A wholly original and thought-provoking approach to transnational private wrongs.

filed for judicial review today denying the right of its faculty members to form a union as they wish and as every other university allows. We will vigorously resist this abusive action which has no basis in law or fact.

We're pitching fair comp, meaningful collegial governance. and community. They're pitching instructing profs to scab on their TAs, with indemnities for fines arising from illegality. What a schemozzle.
