Wait... did Pixar's anim tool not even have 3D gizmos when they made Toy Story?!? They were just dragging left and right on a cell in a spreadsheet on a per-bone, per-transform/rotation basis?
This reminds me of porting Psychonauts to the PS2. Going from 64mb->32mb RAM was a pure pain. Like deciding which 2 of your child's limbs will be chopped off.
This is a clip from a "making of" short about Jumanji from 1995. The animation package is Softimage.
Look at that elephant mesh - that's not a "skinned mesh" as we understand them today; it looks to me like a series of non-deforming patches bound to bones.
@Klipchen
I actually went to Safeway to get some unique food items as source/reference. The other one that made it all the way to an effect was a fully-loaded taco, but I tossed it for the same reason.
@Mike_Prinke
Great thread.
I'd add: All games are a TON of work; even bad games. I've worked on several bad games, and none of them were bad because the team didn't work hard enough or weren't trying their best.
In November I made a game to train my 7yo daughter in doing additions and multiplications. I finally decided to make it a full punkcake, and the result is very interesting. It's almost finished now and we will release it soon.

Level designers: Unless your physics system does some auto-smoothing, give your stairs ramp collision. Just do it. Even if my character will "step" up eventually if I keep pushing, it feels yucky.
Stair-walking should feel as smooth as all other walking.
Dearest Artifact fans,
You are beautiful and passionate and I adore you. You can't know how much I'd like to say things. But I can't, for pretty good reasons.
But yes, per my profile, I am working on Artifact.
However, you shouldn't follow me expecting Artifact news.

You know, Trump and Barr are doing worse things than killing Epstein on a daily basis.
Sometimes the shiny stuff is just trash.
I didn't realize until now what a substantial advantage remote-friendly employers have in attracting talent.
I've lived in the Seattle area for 13+ years. I own a home here. My kids have school and friends; we have roots. I'm not going to relocate.
This is wild. It just looks just like Unity! If that really is Source 2 running under the hood, then this is a remarkable development.
If hope Garry and team are able to keep pushing this forward. Imagine Source 2 with Unity-level scripting capabilities... 👀
Casting a wide net:
I'm finishing up some contract work soon and am looking for a full-time lead or senior game design/level design position. 25 years professional experience, shipped 12 games, 5 of those as Lead Designer. Local to the Seattle area or remote.
DMs open!
Devs, I'm begging you. Check the files that are going into your <possibly shipping build>. I frequently look at game installations and am consistently shocked at the developer-only / debug / SOURCE-CODE-CONTAINING files that make it into releases.
WAIT! I can't believe I just noticed this - it gives you the prompt with the image. But because this is a long session with lots of iteration, the prompt is a synthesis of all the smaller prompts. Wild part - there's text in there that I didn't write.
Conceptual interpolation?
6. Mondrian, Composition with Red Blue and Yellow
Welp, AI tried to add some colors OTHER than red/blue/yellow, but it did generally try to think about grids and blocks of colors!
A group of friends were talking about how this sub had LOTS of redundant systems to force a rise to the surface. One is an expert. (Summarized dialog)
The question was asked: What if there's a vertical obstruction?
A: What?
Q: What if the rise is blocked by something?
BREAKING: The U.S. Coast Guard said a Canadian aircraft has detected underwater noises during the search for a submersible missing near Titanic wreckage.
The kind of schadenfreude we get from dunking on NFTbros after they've lost all their apes only comes along a few times in your life. Usually there's some element of guilt attached, or a liability where you're being hypocritical.
I just want you to appreciate the purity.
We're having a problem at the moment with NPCs not understanding when they've reached a destination.
Unrelatedly, I hop on Twitch to watch a game dev I follow and they're... trying to figure out why their NPCs don't know they've reached their destination.
I see so many Steam pages for indie games that would benefit tremendously from a simple copy editing pass.
Bad descriptions, bad bullet points, poorly-staged screenshots… these aren’t hard to do right, and they MATTER.
Ping me if you want feedback on your store page!
Hey, new pinned tweet!
If you followed me because I have DOTA and CSGO in my bio and you think I might say something about those awesome games, you're going to be disappointed.
In 20 years GPUs will be external, mounted on stationary drones because their fans will be big enough and strong enough to hover in place.
(Also, they'll heat your home.)
@MajorMcDoom
Depends on what you mean by "romanticized."
If you mean making an original game on constrained hardware, sure.
If you mean porting an existing game to a much more constrained machine, absolutely not. It's pure pain.
All this talk of "save scumming" is so silly. 20 years ago that's just how we played computer games. Shipping without robust, fast quicksave/quickload would've been suicide.
A: It would be insane to ever put the sub in that position. But yeah, if you were in an underwater cave or "inside" wreckage, and something went wrong, you'd get stuck.
:(
So, gfx nerd hat on for a sec:
- the blood looks so good because they're using ribbon particles
- ribbon particles are criminally underused in most Western games, we think of them as mostly for smoke
- ribbon particles make anything seem more sticky and squirty
- RIBBONS ARE GOD
Added my actual Discord account info to bio. Not because I'm active on Discord (I'm not) or because I want to be contacted on Discord (I don't) but in the hopes that MFers stop impersonating me and scamming Steam users.
Oh, we're in a sweet spot now. This lattice isn't about deforming empty space; it's finally tracking the selected model's movement path over time (in a way that doesn't obscure the model!)
Adding "motion vectors" to the prompt is paying off, maybe?
I want to call out
@InnerslothDevs
for doing a fantastic job with parental controls. They didn't force me to make an account or anything; they just emailed me a link to a page with some key options to enable/disable. A+ experience, would parent again.
My 8 YO son is in the next room playing Among Us (iOS) for the first time. He's been asking for this for >2 years.
I think this is his first PVP-space online experience.

Insane that corporations can (and do) make art disappear in return for pocket change.
