As vulnerable road users, cyclists aren't interested in "winning more friends". We just want to make everyday journeys safe from the depredations of dangerous drivers.
Studies confirm protected bike lanes not only achieve that, they improve pedestrian safety, too.
Maybe cycling activists could take a lead in encouraging cyclists to abide by the highway code and generally behaving more considerately on the streets instead of routinely changing the subject to bad behaviour by drivers. Accepting responsibility might win them more friends.

This is the most idiotic argument yet on 20mph restrictions. You don't need to drive at 20, 40 or even 50mph from east to west London - you take the M25 & drive at 70mph. That's why it was built - to avoid flattening the city to make room for urban motorways.
