As usual, Douglas Murray is correct in all he says here. The pendulum is swinging back. But I would add that the process of 'deculturation' he describes, the process of demoralising a country by condemning every aspect of its history and culture, has been carried out on Wales, by England, for over 150 years. It's time for that pendulum to swing back as well. HT @CeriJPhillips1

This is interesting; in the city where I was based when I used to work in California. Something similar in Wales would stop the government-funded agencies who attract homeless people to Wales dead in their tracks.

For these purposes, long term means as long as it takes for renewable technologies to become competitive with fossil fuels on an economic basis, without requiring subsidy. The development of such technologies within Wales should be encouraged where practical. For example, Wales has some of the best conditions for tidal energy in the world, so its crazy that most pilot projects installed to date have used technology developed elsewhere. Lack of R&D investment is one of the cardinal weaknesses of the Welsh economy: this would be a good opportunity. But seriously, even completely eliminating carbon emissions from Wales will have no effect at all on the global temperature: hence our slogan that "we should worry more about what the global climate can do to Wales, than about what Wales can do to the global climate." In practice that translates to mitigation always taking precedence over renewable energy subsidy. Sea walls, land reclamation, ensuring drains and ditches are kept clear... also, not concreting over peat bogs to build solar and wind farms. But the stronger our economy, the more affordable mitigation becomes.

What would the first day of a Gwlad government look like? ✅ Repudiating Net Zero ✅ Repealing the Well-being of Future Generations (Wales) Act 2015 ✅ Abandon the 'Nation of Sanctuary' scheme. ✅ Set up an agency for sharply reducing the size of the public sector: AFUERA - the Agency For Uncovering Expenditure we'd Rather Avoid. We may need a chainsaw.

Gwlad's "official" view of these matters is set out in this blog article that I wrote some time ago. TLDR: Of course we're in favour of renewables, but subsidising current-generation renewables at the expense of economic growth is wrong because it impedes the development of better, more competitive renewable technologies in the longer term. In the meantime, it is far better to spend money on mitigation - better flood defences etc.

Very interesting result: Reform not making the impact upon rural Wales that they've been making in urban Wales. The Torfaen result tomorrow will be a strong indicator of how things are moving there.

Haverfordwest: Prendergast by-election result: Independent GAIN from Conservative Alun Wills is elected as the councillor for the ward on Pembrokeshire Council with 31.5% of the vote. Massive slumps in vote for both Tories and Labour, with those two having been the only options in 2022.
