Been a minute (over 3 years) since talking shop in a public arena and couldn’t think of a better person to share stories, experiences, insight gained through the many hats worn over my career. Thanks to great friend Mickey Brueckner for having me on!

Great questions posed here. Broadly speaking, an often overlooked and rather complicated answer is the fact that injury incidence is an ORGANIZATIONAL ISSUE, not simply throwing a “sport science bandage” on the wound and 🙏 things improve. It all starts with absolute ALIGNMENT between the coaches, front office, support staff, and players. If there is low harmony between any of these groups, the likelihood of player development to availability will be compromised.

With injury % up and in particular, hamstring injuries up ~24% across too 5 leagues Is Sports Science doing a good job? Does all the readiness testing do the thing it’s supposedly for? Is the now “best practice” weekly periodised micro cycle actually best practice? Is this body type we seem to have settled upon, optimal? Thoughts? @davecarolan @kevinpaxton10k @FootballFitFed @darrenburgess25 @christombs71 @statsports @OutputSports And are these practices ideal to copy in women’s football? @NotaRealDrLaura @S_Emmonds @DawnScott06 @coach_roche_

A prime example of utilizing medicine ball throws to overload and support the skill of acceleration. Below, a side toss to chase was prescribed in the GPP to assist in the priming of transitional sprinting from a lead. While it may appear #baseball specific, the same cues apply: “stay braced during the twist” “let the ball pull you out”, “hips ahead of heels”, “beat the ball”. Proper Training is Universal.

Great job @drpetertierney….this is why the “solution” to one challenge may not be the same for a similar challenge. Often, (in the end) simple tools can be leveraged to overcome the obstacle but the problem-solving process cannot begin with a reductionist mindset.

FACTORS THAT CAN IMPACT PERFORMANCE v4 I’ve split this into acute & chronic, and consider a wide range of “performance” - from endurance & ultra, to team sports & very short duration events.

Great conversation @Challenger_ST and additional context @lqstrengthcoach. Athlete monitoring allows for an audit of the long term plan by highlighting alterations (both enhanced and suppressed) that align with the “phase of training” which then stages those acute monitoring outcomes to drive programming revisions that keeps an athlete on pace for desired achievement. This to say, correct…..one cannot expect all qualities to improve simultaneously and when one understands (objectively) how a plan influences physical development, they can arrange tactics in a manner to optimize readiness to be punctuated at the right #time.

@Challenger_ST This is part of the argument for block periodization as opposed to undulating periodization. And, phase potentiation as @DrBradDeWeese would put it. One “block” or phase of training lends itself to the next one strategically.

Jumps provide great insight particularly when aligned with context derived from the training plan.

I’m sure you can guess my response. Exposure to high-force producing efforts is necessary to influence a myriad of internal factors ranging from neural optimization/ joint coordination/ fiber recruitment/ load-tissue compliance/ not to mention the psychological components. The outward display of strength (load on the bar or the ratio to BW) is irrelevant as it’s all relative to the athlete’s current state….don’t chase numbers, chase appropriately timed and dosed exposure. Thanks for tagging me in fellas, hope y’all are well. 💪🏼 👊

Happy to see this ⛰️ gain funding and protection so that the community will be afforded access to this increasingly rare, untouched landscape. Great work @SAHC; thank you for taking care of “home” and honored to represent you later this season 👟

@ResilientPPT Absolutely! Integrating controlled and timely (pun intended) “ballistic/ dynamic” movements (or their derivatives) early on in the RTP process is of high value as it permits more complex tasks….that more closely resemble game/ positional…. to be prescribed.
