Interesting to see Liverpool switching from the Lactate Test to a 6-Minute Race Test (6MRT) to obtain the players’ max aerobic speed. - 6 minutes around a 400m race track - as fast as possible - distance covered is the marker Generally looking for somewhere between 1.5-2km.

Anthony Elanga was the fastest forward in the Premier League last season with a max speed of 36.91 km/h. That was a 7.7% increase on his previous season’s best of 34.27 km/h. How does he get faster? He sprints at max speed repeatedly, with sufficient rest between reps.

Liverpool’s Lactate Test. Similar to the Gacon, it measures a player's aerobic endurance, with increasing distances/speeds at 5-6 intervals. Blood is taken from the athlete’s ear at each interval. If they’re below the threshold, they continue. Last man standing wins.

86% of sprints in football are performed with a degree of curvature (Caldbeck, 2022). Therefore it makes sense to train this type of action. From our Academy app, Serpentine Sprints are an ideal drill to use for curved sprinting, ideally over 30-50m. Bookmark to save this.

RST (Repeat Sprint Training) has been demonstrated to have rapid beneficial effects on performance. x6 sessions over 2 weeks shown to improve HSR running abilities (JM Taylor et al). Use the 18 yard box as your guide. Over and back, max effort. 60 seconds recovery.
