They only had to try retake it because of the massive muslim invasions across the Middle East, North Africa, Anatolia, Iberia etc. The land itself was part of the Eastern Roman Empire, which was who requested support from the pope to deal with the constantly pushing invaders.

Sad thing is that they're bad at changing things anyway, but they'll likely never be able to make those changes for accuracy because they'd have to use the classified documents as sources. So it basically outright rules out those tanks ever being accurate for decades.
