Legal status doesn’t mean citizenship. You 1st have tofile for a Permanent Resident (or Green) card, which takes 2-3 yrs. You then have to be a Perm Res for 5yrs before you can begin the process to become a citizen, which takes another 2 years. Only then can you legally vote.
