I was trying to think of a forgotten band name once, kept screaming at my sister, "it's the colour of bread!". Reader, the band was Mumford & Sons.
I was having fun watching this debate and tweeting stupid shit about it but then Morrison said "blessed with kids who don’t have disabilities" and now I think I'm actually going to have to log off and cry instead.
I’m sorry to hear about the death of Sam Langford. Sam was an editor of Honi Soit when I was working at USyd, and therefore responsible for one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen in my life: this pitch perfect satire of The Australian.
Shout out to the teachers of his comprehensive local high school

who helped him get these great grades he's still proud of 30 yrs later. Since Dave has first hand experience of how great public school is, I hope he sends his kids to one as well
DO YOU KNOW WHO ELSE WAS KILLED IN THIS FIRE? Hannah Baxter, the primary target of this crime, murdered by her ex-husband. This headline is a disgrace.
Stories like this are elitist, classist, selfish bullshit. Reinforcing the idea that there’s some kind of agonising decision to be made and that you should be spending a heap of money making the “best choice” for your individual child. I hate this.
I am DONE with M&M's!
Not one M&M will pass my lips until Mars issues a formal apology and releases an all-male package of M&M's to demonstrate their commitment to gender equality.
These female M&M's are a slap in the face to men everywhere. We MUST band together and boycott!
Andrew Leigh is a bonafide smart guy, a former professor in economics in arguably Australia's best research economics department in our best university. Trust him when he says there's no ecoomic policy basis for this proposal.
The Greens' rent freeze would reduce the supply of rental homes, making life tougher for renters. They propose it knowing it'll never get implemented.
Meanwhile, every day they block the Housing Australia Future Fund, 16 fewer homes get built

Ok two final things: it was possible to get a TER of 100 in ye olden days so no need to be a conspiracist about this. He's an honest dork. And h/t to

who received this directly from the Head Boy and tweeted it first.
Look what arrived in my letterbox today - Allegra Spender’s newsletter, and desperate Dave Sharma’s teal knock-off - with not one mention of the party he represents
I’m the first person in my family to go to uni, first in my family to finish Year 10.
Education changes lives.
Today I was sworn in as Minister for Education.
Ok fine I will say something about today’s Balmain article. The
@smh
should not print demonstrably false information like “there’s not a scintilla of evidence” that increased urban supply will “push prices down”.
I’m sorry this is so funny - the actual problem is my Stuart Little ass car tricking people into thinking there’s a fee space.
Stuart Little mobile. I am WEEPING. I love it 😭😭😭
This has all the hits
- It must be 100% public housing or nothing
- I support housing, just not *this* one which happens to be in my backyard
- It will create traffic (cars are very important)
The Greens are not serious about housing
House prices are on track to rise across the country, propelled by renters and migrants wanting to buy their own homes and buyers trying to get in ahead of interest rate cuts expected later this year.
Big news: I'm running for Balmain. For 12 long years we've been smashed by the Liberals and we need a representative who is effective at advocating for our needs, beyond mere spin.
A short time ago I called Kobi Shetty to congratulate her on winning the seat of Balmain. I wished her well and encouraged her to work constructively with Chris Minns and his incoming Labor Government.
The bar is unfathomably, cruelly low if the response to the housing crisis is look here’s a two bedroom walk up on a four lane highway 25km and a hour on the train from the city, go live there.
So great to be at
@SallySitou
’s fundraiser today. The IWC Leichhardt Ward is partly in the seat of Reid and I’ll do everything I can to make our shared constituents have the Federal representation they deserve!
In which Khwaja: correctly identifies the players’ association as a union; advocates for unions for lower paid cricketers; links the better pay and conditions the unionised players have with better outcomes for the individual worker and sector.

I kept a copy because I knew those editors would do big things. I’m so sorry we won’t get to see what more Sam could do. My sympathies to Sam’s family, friends and colleagues .
Ran into the incredible
@RealTimFerguson
at my street stall in Glebe.
I was absolutely star struck, like, mouth agape with delight at having run into one of the coolest people of my childhood.
And what did Tim say? "Compose yourself, comrade!"
THRILLING.
Every part of Australian life has something to gain from building more housing. I really welcome the SMH’s new series on the economic effects of our distorted, supply-constrained market.
@CrPhilippaScott
No, we want to build high quality affordable public housing.
The private market has failed to deliver affordable homes for ordinary people - they market "luxury" apartments to the wealthy instead, and claim somehow, one day in the distant future, it'll fix the housing crisis.
Ok one last thing. Every time someone doesn't want to build any housing the argument maligning the proposal vacillates between "Meriton shitboxes" and "luxury apartments". Nothing is acceptable. Just say you don't want anything to change and be done.

The loss of young people from Balmain and Newtown is unbelievably sad, and tells us a huge amount about what is going on there. To reference something has been popular on here the last few days: the purpose of a system is what it does.
We’re doing our part with a bold plan for 10 infill sites in the Inner West to be dedicated to affordable housing.
We can’t say no any more, we must say yes in our backyard 🙌
I’ve just been elected as P&C President of my kids’ large, comprehensive city-based public high school. The first thing we’d like to do is organise some consent / sex ed talks for parents. “How to talk to your kids about consent”. That kind of thing. Any reccs for speakers?
So true. Why do new buildings have to be wacky? We know what to do: return to the tradition of no set backs, uniform fabric with fine detailing, we'll get wonderful streets as a result. 😍
Two buildings very similar in scale. One shows a mature, steady hand, confidence, humility, and respect. The other is what almost every developer builds everywhere these days, and what most design codes are more likely to demand.
@AmyRemeikis
This was so baffling. An error from both of them. You should expect these things to happen. The blithe denial of responsibility for mistakes small (tripped playing footy) and devastatingly large (Robodebt) is a constant theme from this govt and it’s Ministers.
Last night I was elected Deputy Mayor of the Inner West - an absolute honour. The Inner West has been my home for my whole life, and its diversity, inclusiveness and progressiveness is a source of pride and joy to me. I am utterly thrilled and very thankful for this opportunity.
I’m sorry I promise I won’t keep doing this and I know I have a small car but honestly our streets never used to be dominated by these absolute monsters. Who can spot my Stuart Little ass car today?
This is a great article with three excellent points:
1️⃣ the economic loss when people have to commute long hours, move to Canberra or quit. Bad housing is DIRE for social mobility and we are shrinking ourselves into land being a class determinate
You don’t even have to extrapolate to the HAFF. The man interviewed lives under a bridge in the Balmain electorate, where both the current and former Greens members have opposed affordable housing. Shame.
WATCH THIS: A 67yo homeless man speaks on how he is affected by the Greens Party blocking social & affordable housing.
When the Greens Party delays housing to run a “doorknocking campaign”, just remember that they are the reason people don't have a safe place to call home.
The evidence is clear and overwhelming that it will. Their editors know this. I do not think they should publish articles - even in the opinion section - that contain this misinformation. You can have your own opinion, you don’t get your own facts.
I was too excited to post last night, and there is a still a lot to be counted, especially prepoll which is huge, but at this stage I am polling first in Leichhardt Ward which I am delighted about.
Why do people bother to *get* elected if they can't filter information and make decisions? We had a decade of opposition to a skate park in Leichhardt on the basis of "noisy children". It's built now and it's great. Sometimes the most ungenerous sentiment can just be ignored.

This is a poll absolutely absent reality because there are (virtually) no 4 bedroom townhouses or 3 bedroom apartments available in the inner west or inner city for $1.3m

I'm going to say this with all the sincerity of the Xer that I am: Nirvana being contracted to play the BDO in Jan '92. Releasing Nevermind in Sept '91. Playing the tour anyway, and opening for Youthu Yindi.
Former Labor strategist

has some advice for Anthony Albanese:
“Housing is a huge issue with voters, Labor’s policy response is not cutting through, and the Greens are coming to get them.”
Ok why don’t they just NOT spray the champagne? If Uzzie has to be out of that part of the celebration and they’re not drinking it, it’s just pointless. Come on, this one simple change and you could include your teammate in everything!

If you're on the fence about being a left YIMBY, consider that Sydney has absolutely paid for its lack of density with tolls and gambling. That's how we fund infrastructure and subsidise our nightlife.
A historic day with

electing an outright Labor majority. I am so proud of our whole team - we had progressive ideas and never stopped talking about them. Special thanks to my running mate

@NSWEducation
Yep. We send soap, tissues and paper towels along with scissors, glue, and whiteboard markers all for the “class pool”. I don’t resent contributing what’s needed but uhhhhh those are pretty basic education supplies missing from the the stock of a public school.
There is a grotesque irony in the Member for Balmain saying “their voices must be heard” when local Greens hijacked the Indigenous Voice referendum polling day to hand out anti-housing material.
This sounds like a bit, and yet every single Labor member in Grayndler knows it’s absolutely not a bit and has definitely collected some corflutes from papou’s garage.
From primary school to high school to law school to P&C mum, I've always been

. I feel immensely privileged to have been educated at Fort Street High School, right here in the inner west, the first-ever government high school in Australia.
I doubt they would publish a climate change skeptic these days. And it’s exactly the same.
There’s too much to link to but here’s one like from last year.
I am incredibly proud of this. A Labor government will create a treaty with Indigenous people in NSW. This is long past due, and a meaningful step along the way to reconcilation.
Met a bonafide legend today: Dorothy McRae-McMahon. Anti-war and anti-apartheid demo leader, lesbian minister and advocate for the ordination of women and gay people. Street minister. HOUSING ADVOCATE. A genuine hero to me. Please be reminded that sometimes the world is good.
I don't know who needs to hear this, but NS (the national train operator in the Netherlands) "upcycles" its old train furnishings into a line of products that includes "Intercity" and "Sprinter" sneakers. To be honest, I'm tempted.
I was searching for something else and was reminded of this thread from a year ago.
“One million homes, but not until everything’s perfect, PS you are corrupt” remains all-time Greens framing of this debate. I cannot stop laughing.

Yes, we have argued for more housing but public and affordable. And the Canada Bay group were pressing for more infrastructure to support development. Former Canada Bay Labor Mayor now in ICAC on development issue.
I look forward to spending more time at home with my family and devoting all my energy going forward to my role as Deputy Mayor of Inner West Council.
Thank you, Balmain. It's been an honour.

In today's
@crikey_news
, I argue there are solid reasons for the left to 'go YIMBY'.
Sure there are some free-market YIMBYs who neglect public housing, but most want abundant housing of all types. Worth supporting for same reasons as full employment.
Last night I attended a meeting in Leichhardt to discuss changes to planning controls in parts of west Leichhardt that have been identified for rezoning since 2016, as part of the Parramatta Rd Strategy.
Last night’s results show that the people of NSW have voted decisively for a fresh start with
@ChrisMinnsMP
and Labor.
Congratulations to Chris and his team - he is going to make an amazing Premier and I am so excited to see what Labor will achieve for NSW.
@heritage_why
Something super grim about housing in Sydney in general is how much of what’s in that vid (damp, leaning rooms, cracks in walls) is absolutely not confined to student sharehouses. Adults with healthy incomes paying millions for terraces just like that. We need better houses.
I joined a solid door knocking session this afternoon with volunteers in Granville, Sydney.
There were many Yes voters at the doors with as many undecided.
We can only win this referendum if we do the hard work. Join us at
Please donate too.

@LukeBartolo1
Greens in the inner west actively oppose building new housing, or amplify the fears of the community to get others to mobilise against it. Absent new housing to bring down the price, rich parents are the alternate solution. So yeah, effectively it is their policy.
1. I love pubs and I’m fine with heritage listing individual pubs.
2. Without customers - esp a continuing renewal of young people- pubs close and that is sad.
3. We should build apartments on top of pubs. No complaining allowed.
Heritage policy cannot force pub owners to continue operating the same business. This is why I think we should be more open to putting apartments on top of pubs, especially since the new people living there would probably be customers of the pub.
I am pretty thrilled about being a guest on
@SydneyYIMBY
’s panel about housing abundance!
We have got to get to better policy solutions, and I’m excited to explore what they are! 🏡🏠

Please know that this full-scale replica of The Oz was on newspaper racks next to all the other papers in the cafe. The front-page double-takes were something to behold. The university-specific snark inside had us howling.
I'm already on the record as being a HUGE Christie Whelan fan (I saw Muriel the Musical twice! Her Mad As characters are the funniest!) - but this is just so much sweeter 😍😍😍😍 Listen to Christie!!
If anyone thinks Leichhardt has lost it, Jeff Fenech has his Lambo parked half in and half out of a no-parking zone outside this pizza place on Marion St rn. He’s in the window eating spaghetti Napoli without a care in the world.
Yeah. That’s exactly it. Women would leave bad husbands. 21year olds could leave home. 30 year olds still in share houses could get their own place.
It’s so sad we aren’t willing to give this to people.
If Aust is missing 1.3m houses who would live in them? How many couples would dissolve? 360k Group houses some of them? Some young adults leave family homes? 1.3m is a lot of household formation tho!
