Leaders will deflect all blame on Kim Gardner and she will be gone, but that will not make downtown safer. The Mayor must finally accept responsibility for safety in her city, go beyond press conferences, tweets, and carefully worded statements and put forward a plan to make

Sadly, the mass shooting that occurred in Downtown St. Louis was entirely predictable. In fact, it was inevitable. Large groups of young people out late at night, alcohol, guns, unregulated short-term rentals, irresponsible landlords, and illegal bars are a volatile combination.
We hear from parking enforcement officers that some people have 200-300 unpaid parking tickets and suffer no consequences. Red lights have now simply become suggestions. Speeding and reckless driving are commonplace. We are sliding far down the slippery slope of lawlessness
In response to the horrific crash and devastating injury to the volleyball player visiting St. Louis, regional leaders claim that "this isn't who we are." Sadly, if they had been paying attention, they would know that it is exactly who we are. This has been our downtown for the
Downtown St. Louis is significantly under-policed. Arrests must be made. Vehicles must be towed. Airbnbs must be regulated. Bars must be regulated. Drug dealing must be addressed. Unhoused populations must be housed (and not all inside of Downtown or the City for that matter).
The violent and disruptive events of the last week in Downtown and all the City of St. Louis require a meaningful response, not just more excuses. We can’t change the gun laws in Missouri, but there’s a lot we can do to stop the mayhem. It’s simply negligence to say that there is
