Enrolled for year 2 of SLT degree. Just seen timetable and nerves have started to kick in. I’ve heard second year is hard going and am already concerned that I have no clue what my dissertation will be about in final year. Few calming breaths needed I think.

First day of first clinical placement. Sat in car park forty minutes early because it’s much better than being late and as it’s a new place for me I have no idea about roads or timings. Not taking any chances.

Today was a great day on placement. I did my first intervention (from my own session plan) and got to shadow a Deafness SLT. So interesting. Feel really privileged that Practice Educators and other therapists share their time and knowledge with us

Results from two assignments not what I’d hoped for despite being clear passes. Hoping that I’ll one day get to the place where I see what I’ve achieved rather than seeing marks I failed to get.

I’ve done a bit of revision on cranial nerves today but my brain/mental health needed a break so I went out for a walk at my local country park and just enjoyed nature and the sun on my skin. Much needed. Tomorrow it’s the final push for exam on Tuesday.

First day of placement tomorrow. 1 day a week for 10 weeks. Feel nervous but massively looking forward to it. If my PE is anything like last then I’ll be very happy. Just having those last minute jitters about forgetting things I need

Dry run to placement today. Feel much better when prepared. It’s not a massively long way but the drive isn’t straightforward either.

Got 92% on my biology exam. Was expecting 60 odd as I genuinely had no clue how I’d done coming out of it. Shocked but happy.
Just need my portfolio back and then I’ll know if I’ve passed year 1.

Todays placement hasn’t yet started anc I’ve already put out a bin fire. An actual one. Someone put a lot cigarette in a bin and suddenly there was lots of smoke and smouldering. I threw my whole 2 litre bottle of water on it.

I’m learning so much at uni but probably 1 of the best sources is the other students. Now in year 2 more are taking part in discussions & I can honestly say that listening to their views & ideas is brilliant. So inspiring & gives new perspective.

Tomorrow is my last day of placement - ten weeks have flown by. I’ve learned so much and been so lucky with my Practice Educators and wider team. Grateful for the time, knowledge and guidance that PEs give to us students.

I like to print out my lecture notes and write on them. I find I process it better. I work better with paper materials rather than ebooks and electric PowerPoints. Is anyone else the same and do you have any tips for when paper format not available?

Lecturer posed this question today when talking about pass marks. Asked what we want to achieve and how we will feel that we did ‘enough’. It hit me hard when I realised that I don’t know the answer to this, but for my own sanity around pass marks I need to decide.

My 12 yo daughter said ‘watch your back’ today & I started telling her enthusiastically that it was an idiom & what one was.
Her response ‘mum you’re teaching me things & that’s illegal on the weekends’.

I’m not fully proficient but I have to say that I love phonetics and transcribing. In fact, I don’t think there’s an area of study that I’ve done so far that I haven’t loved (except maybe research that was hard going.)

Diving in to chapter 3 - feel fortunate most of book makes sense to me as I’ve got kids who I’ve taught to read & also worked in a school helping kids to learn phonetics, rhyme & blend etc(Jolly Phonics &Read Write Inc anyone? 😂) Wish all my uni learning made so much sense 😅

Coming out other side of open book exam. 72 hours to write 3 x 800 word answers to qs on stammering,voice,phonology,motor speech& paediatric language pathology.
It’s been eventful to say the least considering I’ve had to have rabbit put down & daughter had bad fall in this time

Just been on practice run for my placement as parking is a nightmare and public transport would take almost two hours. Think I’ve figured out a car park. Definitely better to feel prepared

Dream last night involved me failing to do my phonetics homework and having to tell my very disappointed lecturer. The fact I also had to do it in Spanish and that my childhood best friend had done it (she isn’t an SLT!) was just 😂

I see this every time I’m on my way into lectures and each time I try to visual me stood in front of it in three years with a BSc to my name. Sometimes it feels like a mountain to climb, but I’ll do my best to get there, using this as a reminder of my goal

Also be clear with them when feeding back and let them know it’s ok to ask questions and not know everything. I didn’t realise until end of my placement that actually I needed someone to sit down with me & write a session plan & explain rationale because I had no theory in area

Conversation with a meta human referred with voice difficulties likely stemming from Parkinson’s disease. Was sceptical about it but it was such a good experience. So interesting to see how we each approached the client differently too. Learned so much from my peers

The week so far has mainly been frustrating, with moments of doubting myself. Sometimes I’m serious, sometimes I’m a bit quirky & chatty. In a room where I’m the oldest this has never felt more obvious or uncomfortable than the last two days.

I’ve submitted my first Summative research paper of Year 1. Been a challenge but I know I’ve done all can right now. It’s not due until mid November so I have 2 weeks to change if I suddenly get more inspiration. Until then it’s time to have a breather. Placement assignment next
