Something I love about New Vegas and to an extent, Fallout 3, is that the main plot is something you can pursue at your own pace and still feel in character doing so. You don't have to prioritise finding your killer, or your father who can handle himself.

I think one of the best options from this project is the 'A Canticle for Leibowitz' esque atomic Priesthood concept they thought up.
Some kind of organisation that will have members who survive and can help mould whatever cultures come about and ensure awareness of the danger.
