The Oilers just made it to game seven of the Stanley Cup Final on a Holland built post-Chiarelli team that barely had an analytics department until this season.
While I am sad for how this season ended, I am excited to see what this off-season brings. Onwards and upwards.
Waiving Josh Brown is a no-brainer, but the more I think about it, I lean to also waiving Corey Perry. The Oilers have the option to go younger and faster while saving 400K.

Well we know what Whitney would have done in the Beach situation if he was involved and it would not have been supporting his teammate that's for sure.
I am tired of seeing ths type of surface level analysis. Gord is demonstrating how you can come to poor conclusions when you do not go deep enough into the material.
If the Oilers win, it is despite Chiarelli and Holland and anyone who has dived into this team knows that.
As Edmonton advances to the Stanley Cup Final, Oiler GM Ken Holland is deservedly getting credit for his excellent moves (signing Zach Hyman, trading for Mattias Ekholm, the early season coaching change) but his much-maligned predecessor Peter Chiarelli deserves credit as well.
Let's see how Evan Bouchard's on-ice 5x5 league wide ranking for d-men is in the last 7 games (min TOI 70). Out of 171 d-men:
CF% 2nd
FF% 1st
SF% 2nd
GF% T-19th
xGF% 1st
SCF% 1st
HDCF% 4th
HDGF% T-68th
There was a Finnish RW on the Stars who played mainly 1st line with Modano while being a two time Selke winner. He was 22 when he joined the league and put up a combined 0.59 Pts/GP in his first two years.
Puljujarvi over same age period is 0.53.
You can make a strong case that Evan Bouchard has the best on-ice results of any d-men in the league. The media in this town should be screaming from the rooftops for him to win the Norris.
These are the only two D in the league that are in the 80th+ percentile in each category.
I think you guys picked the wrong dman on this road trip to rail on

We have not heard directly from Kyle Beach. There is also two other victims that won't or can't speak on the matter.
Kennedy was not a victim in this matter and was paid so why should one believe he has any greater moral authority.
@Robin_Brownlee
, thank you for the PM but unfortunately I can’t accept your apology. You and your cronies have been doing your best to tear me down for almost 2 decades. Between you, Kyle Woodlief and Mark Spector, the damage you have done to my name is irreversible.
I get the eagerness on Broberg after the postseason but
136 5v5 minutes
37% xGoal share
43% shot share
96.7% on-ice save percentage
12.4% on-ice shooting percentage
exactly the kind of small sample crap that can get you in trouble
Janmark has played with Drai and/or Kane for just over 100 minutes. In that time the Oilers have 2 GF and 9 GA. Can someone explain this to me like I am a simpleton?
I have not so fond memories of a time when the Oilers LOST every game in the month of January. We’ve come a long way!
Anyone remember what year that was?
Johnson was a consensus 2nd round pick that played zero games in his draft year.
The only thing these individuals are doing is proclaiming their lack of draft knowledge.
@jimmathesonnhl
Stop, just stop already. We have been over this already with you Jim. No correlation between 5x5 defense and PK defense. Being able to defend the rush through the neutral zone and in zone defense are different skillsets. You can be good at one and not the other.
xGF/60-xGA/60 at 5x5 wowy
McDavid +1.05

Keeping McDavid off this list is a good example of galaxy brain.
Same as with wingers. I've decided that center had to at least below-average to average defensive results to be on this list. That's why you don't see players like McDavid or Draisaitl here. Robert Thomas is still one of the most underrated players in the whole league.
If the Oilers believe in Holloway and can get Brown on the cheap, it is time to move both Yamamoto and Foegele and start accruing cap space for a deadline deal.
McDavid's EV production through his NHL career is ridiculous. His P/G production is only 11% less than Lemieux through their first 5 seasons and is 20% greater than Crosby.
Lemieux: 389 Pts in 368 GP
Crosby: 290 Pts in 371 GP
McDavid: 287 Pts in 306 GP
The Oilers forwards have a combined game score of 80.27.
McDavid, Draisaitl, Nuge, Hyman and the Bison King account for 105% of it.
Talk about being dragged down by your teammates.

There is around 16.5 million tied up in Puljujarvi, Yamo, Foegele, Barrie and Ceci. Reallocating most of those funds to a right shot shooter and 1st pairing right shot D should be the focus of the current GM.
@scottcwheeler
Only if your rewarding longevity and ability to remain injury free. Crosby was the better player through their prime years.
And even then, Howe deserves to be up ahead of Ovi. If it was me Ovi slots in around Jagr.

They changed the name because the sponsors forced the issue. The majority of Indigenous people in the Western half of Canada were supportive of keeping the name.
The most common comparable for Evan Bouchard is John Carlson. This is how they performed in their D+2 season.

I have seen some LT clapback on my Twitter feed and those individuals can F' right off. Over the last 2 decades, he has treated Oilers fans with kindness and respect and has earned a boatload of it back. So if you being an asshole to LT it's probably because you simply are one.
In the regular season at 5x5, Oilers w/o McDavid had better results than Panthers w/o Barkov.
The narrative that the Panthers have more depth does not hold water.
Around 18:00 - what Kalle Larsson looked for when recruiting:
- fast, hard, and skilled (need 2 out of 3)
- smart players, can't coach stupid, if you can't think the game it's hard to get better
- guys that get after it (in the gym/on the backcheck/go to traffic)
NEW Podcast Episode: We preview the USHL season and I welcome Dubuque Fighting Saints GM Kalle Larsson to talk about his career in hockey and building teams. Plus I answer your prospect questions. Watch here, or download on your favorite podcast app:

Can we stop getting lazy takes like this already? The Oilers without McDavid at 5x5 under Woodcroft was 51.9, which would be 7th in the West. They are a bubble team without McDavid (and that's not accounting for the Oilers using his 12.5M on obtaining other players).
The Oilers are 0GF-9GA when Foegele plays with Ceci and/or Nurse.
The Oilers are 2GF-2GA when Foegele is without Nurse and Ceci.
The Oilers are 10GF-9GA when Ceci and/or Nurse is without Foegele.
The Oilers are 20GF-10GA w/o Ceci, Nurse and Foegele.
If I was a sports journalist for the Oilers, getting to the bottom of what exactly occurred with Blumel would be near the top of my columns to do list.
Regular season 5x5

Panthers w/ Barkov +30
Oilers w/o McDavid +7
